Oatmeal of Champions

Good morning!

I realized I’ve never featured a breakfast on the blog! Don’t worry, I always eat breakfast (and you should, too!), it’s just that breakfast is the one meal where I almost always end up eating the exact same thing… every. single. day. I just really love cereal. Especially Kashi Heart to Heart mixed with Kashi Honey Sunshine, topped with sliced banana, berries, and skim milk. Perfection!

When I was living in Prague earlier this year, I had to give up my true love for cereal and settle for my on and off mistress, oatmeal.

014

Oats were dirt cheap, and their cereals were expensive and nastily sugar heavy. As time went on, I began to really look forward to my warm bowl of oats on those cold eastern European winter mornings.

Today, I decided to bring breakfast back Prague style. If you think you don’t like oatmeal (or think you don’t like anything besides sugary instant oatmeal), give this a try. The banana is the key. I promise you’ll love it!

Here’s your guide to the perfect bowl of oats… without dirtying a single pot or pan!

Perfect (Microwave) Banana Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe banana, sliced
  • 1/2 C rolled oats
  • 1/2 C skim milk (or dairy substitute)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • Toppings as desired (berries, brown sugar, flax, coconut, nut butter, etc.)

Instructions:

First, slice a ripe banana into a microwave safe bowl. The super ripe banana is the key to oatmeal — it makes it nice and sweet (the riper the banana, the sweeter it is!) and gives it a fun texture! I always cut the banana in half vertically first and then slice pieces off, so they’ll be in smaller chunks than just slicing it normally :)

001

Top the banana with the oats, followed by the skim milk (or dairy substitute). I never make my oatmeal using water. Milk makes it SO MUCH TASTIER! :)

Add in the cinnamon, and pop the bowl into the microwave. Microwave on high for 2.5 minutes, stopping once halfway through to stir.

006

Once it’s out, top with desired toppings! I usually add blueberries, coconut, and ground flaxseed. Delicious!

Do you like oatmeal? If so, do you go for instant, make your own in the microwave, or stove top oats? What are your favorite toppings?

I’m off to keep stalking the airlines in hopes of getting down to Florida sooner than Wednesday… we’ll see. There may also be more sledding involved ;) Who needs the gym when you can sled?!

Have a nice Monday!

I hate to admit it but I really like Kashi’s Heart to Heart Cinnamon oatmeal. I’m slowly switching over to regular oats (I sound like an addict), but Kashi was what I started with so I guess I’m just used to it.

    I love cranberries/frozen raspberries/apple or blueberries/pear and of course barney butter! :)

I’m a microwaver :-) I do 1/4 cup oatbran and 1/4 cup steel cuts. If I’m adding banana, I mush up 3oz in the beginning. Or if I’m doing pumpkin I stir in 1/2 a cup after having it cooked and then heat it back up

Oh Prague! I was there for 6 weeks and it was the time of my life. I always love seeing other people’s pictures from their time in that amazing city! I would go back in a heart beat.

Why did I not think that you could microwave regular oats .. grrr!!! Love oatmeal but sometimes doing it on the stovetop does get tiring.

Anne, your oatmeal is delicious!! I still remember how tasty and filling it was when I visited you in Prague- that stuff kept me full for hours of walking! :) And, I couldn’t taste the secret healthy flaxseed, heh. Glad you’ve finally put it on the blog!

I’m a stove top oats kinda girl! My favorite toppings are any sliced fruit, PB, coconut, and dried cranberries!

I LOVE my morning oats, and I have them every day! I used to eat them with fruit but I’ve discovered that if I don’t have some sort of protein with them then I’m hungry almost an hour after I eat them. Sometimes I take 1/2c of oats and mix in 1 scoop of chocolate protein powder, mix in water, brewed coffee and nuke for about 1:20. I know that the coffee sounds weird, but they taste like mocha oats, so delicious! I also like to cook 1 egg and 1 egg white and add them to my oats as well.
Mmmm, can’t wait for breakfast tomorrow!

Mmmm mocha oats… sounds delish :) – Anne

Hi I was searching for recipes for ripe Banannas and came across yours~ Thank you for posting this! It’s very tasty-I topped mine with chocolate hazelnut butter!

I used light vanilla soy milk in this, and to my surprise it worked fabulously! I only use cow milk in recipes; lost my taste for milk years ago & have never cared for it in oatmeal. Soy milk gave me back cereal but I’ve always hated it in recipes. No awkward taste at all for this picky vegetarian. This was SUPER YUMMY! With 2 tsp brown sugar & 7 walnut halves = heaven for 400 calories!
