LA Boxing gets fANNEtastic!

I also considered entitling this post: “Why I can’t lift my arms above my head today.” Lol!

So, why am I so sore?

Because I’m the newest member of LA Boxing!

LA Boxing is the world’s largest boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts gym. They focus on workouts that are exciting, challenging, and fun, providing an endurance-building cardiovascular workout along with full body strengthening and toning.

I used to do kickboxing at a martial arts place back in 2001, and I absolutely LOVED it. I was seriously in the best shape of my life! So when I saw LA Boxing representatives at FitBloggin’ last month, I immediately went over to say hi.

We’ve been chatting ever since about a partnership, which I’m happy to announce has now officially begun!

For the next three months, LA Boxing will be sponsoring my membership at their gym, and I’ll be sharing my experience with all of you! In addition to attending their cardio kickboxing classes a couple times a week, I’ll also be doing some personal training with them. I can’t wait to learn some new strength moves to share!

Before work yesterday morning I headed to LA Boxing for my first kickboxing class in years!

It was just as awesome and hard as I remembered it. Each person gets their own bag and wears gloves and wraps, and for the hour-long class, you alternate between punch and kick combinations and strength/cardio moves (jumping jacks, squats, pushups, sit-ups, etc.).

It’s hard, but the classes are high energy and fun, and challenge me in a way I would never be challenged just working out on my own! :) I was literally DRIPPING with sweat by the end of it!

The thing I love about kickboxing at boxing gyms as opposed to my normal gym is that you actually get to use gloves and bags! There’s just something so satisfying about punching something ;) Hello, stress relief! Plus, I feel hardcore wearing gloves and wraps. Heh!

I’m really excited about this partnership and the opportunity to mix up my normal routine. While I’m obviously already in good cardiovascular shape from all my running, I was getting into a major rut with my strength and cross training. This is just the thing I need to shake things up and learn some new moves to pass on to all of you! I’ll also be doing some giveaways and a special event for local readers/bloggers, so stay tuned! :)

Also, just a disclaimer — while LA Boxing is providing me with membership and personal training over the next few months, it is up to me what I write about them on the blog, and I would never accept money to say I liked something that I didn’t. Anything you read on here about them will be my honest opinion, and nothing else! :)

Questions of the Day:

Do you mix up your workout routine or do you also have trouble with getting into ruts? I feel like I’m always in a huge rut around this time of year after having spent all winter in a gym instead of outside! Conversely, I always feel in my best shape and most toned in the fall after a full summer of varied outdoor workouts.

Have you ever tried kickboxing? If so, did you like it? And if not, will you give it a try?

    I kickboxed for one summer in college. The gym ran a deal for students and I really loved it! It was full contact with pads and gloves…I felt pretty badass! Only problem – I quit after my friend went back to school because I was too chicken to partner up with strangers….maybe I’ll try again someday.

    I’ve done at home kickboxing DVDs, but its been years. I definitely get into workout ruts – but I just bought a bike on Sunday so I’m hoping that blasts me out of it!

    I am joining an MMA Gym today. I went last night and checked the place out to see if it was what I wanted. Although it is very small compared to your place I think we both have the same goals in mind for it. I hope the partnership works out for you and continues for as long as you’d like.

    How cool. I am all about doing different types of workouts to avoid the exercise rut. I run, lift weights, do kickboxing (DVDs), step aerobics, spin classes.

    I just took my first bag/glove kickboxing class this past weekend! It was great!! (Although I had a little too much to drink the night before so I kind of wanted to throw up and hated that.) It felt SO good to be able to punch/kick something besides the air and get some aggression out! Don’t get me wrong, I love my Turbo Kick, but sometimes a girl just needs to hit something! :)

    delurker here! i just had to say i loveeeeeeeee kickboxing (and your blog ofcourse)! i did it for about two years and i have had to take a hiatus the past couple months because of the price, but it definetly is one of my favorite things to do! (p.s. im just about to turn 18!)

    I love kickboxing, I teach “fight club” at one of the local gyms and we use bags/gloves and have a kickin’ time! Definitely helps venting aggression!

    Most impressive, Anne! Good luck; there’s nothing like mixing up one’s workout routine — as long as you don’t let it reduce your training for the “half!”

    My sister-in-law just lost a lot of weight by joining a kick boxing gym. She’s even competing now! She loves it! I’m really interested in taking a class, but I’m too cheap … same goes for pilates. :(

    I get into workout ruts all the time, and also like to switch things up periodically. I used to take spinning all the time at the gym, but now I take a “Total Body Conditioning” class instead to add more strength training (since I already run for my cardio). My gym used to have kickboxing (using actual bags and gloves) and rumor has it it might start back up in May! I’m excited! I also tried pilates for the first time last week…my abs were sore for three days!

    Looking forward to seeing the half marathon training plan!

    i used to love to kick boxing but the gym i am a member of now doesnt hold classes :( approx how much does it cost a month to use LA fitness? Are classes the only way to workout too? i looked up my local one and most days the dont start till 930 am

      The pricing really depends on the location, special deals they’re running, etc. So it’d be best to ask your local gym :) That sucks your local gym doesn’t have classes until 9:30, though! Mine has classes at 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. which is great. Maybe you can ask them to start some earlier? I bet others would be interested, too!

      BUT… classes aren’t the only thing you can do! My gym also has some cardio equipment (treadmill, elliptical, etc.) and a weights area, so you can always go in during off hours to do stuff on your own :)

    I wish I was closer to one! It looks like so much fun. I picked up a book on kickboxing at my work (I used to work at a bookstore) and I kept meaning to try it but I was too chicken to start doing it and thinking someone in my dorm room my hear me hopping around. But maybe one day!

    When I’m in a rut I just try to mix it up. Though I gotta say I never enjoy spending a lot of time in the gym!

    I am currently a LAboxing customer and I love it too. However I only bought my membership to help me get through the winter months. It expires next month and goign to save some money by not renewing it till later this year. I think I may buy a bag for my house to practice in my “off season” ha ha

    I tried a kick boxing class in NJ with my sister-in-law a couple years ago and wow, it was a GREAT workout. I was soooooooo sore the next day, but I could tell it worked all kinds of muscles that I must not normally be working in my other workouts. I would love to do kick boxing again but I don’t think we have much in the way of kick boxing where I live (in Charlotte).

      Exactly – I’ve been doing all sorts of running, some weights and cross training, etc., but DAMN was I sore yesterday!!! Clearly it’s good to mix things up! :)

    I used to do boxing when I first got into working out when I was like 17. I did a cardio kickboxing class with my dad where we used gloves and bags on stands. I feel super badass when I kicked the bag over!

    I am totally in a workout rut, its all gym all the time. I keep injuring myself – nothing serious, but its always my feet, right now I have crazy plantar fascitis (spell?) in my left foot and its just starting to get better. With all the injuries I can really only do impact cardio once a week and I run on the treadmill for that session, the rest of the time I do the eliptical machine, maybe the rower or stairstepper, and lift weights. However we are moving to Corvallis, OR in September and I plan on going crazy with biking and hiking before the bad weather hits :)

    I take a cardioboxing class at my local gym-I love it! Between that class and an interval training (called Sports Circuit) class I’ve been taking my fitness level has really improved-and I think it’s improved my endurance/strength for running as well. With the boxing especially there’s definition in my arms/shoulders I never had before-and that’s not even with actual bags/gloves! I’d love to try it that way…

    I used to do boxing/kickboxing classes at a gym when I lived in L.A., and I adored it. Unfortunately, I had to quit when I injured my back (be careful when kicking that bag!), but that was one of the most fun workouts I have ever done. It’s a workout and a stress reliever all in one! I especially like how it works your core. I can’t wait to live vicariously through your boxing adventures. :)
