I am SO excited to share this adventure with all of you! I’ll be heading to Vermont on Friday and spending the weekend touring organic farms and learning more about organics in general. I even get to milk a cow! Yesssssss.

Guess I’d better buy some farm-worthy boots, huh?!

Call for Questions

I’d love to make this weekend more interesting and informative for you guys! During the trip, I’ll get the opportunity to meet the farmers and talk to them about organics, their farms, and more. Do any of you have any specific questions you would like me to ask, either of Stonyfield or of their farmers? Please leave them in the comments below! I’d love any ideas you might have :)

In other news — it is so glorious to have your favorite, healthy breakfast again after a long weekend of hotels and travel.

004

Oh Kashi cereal, how I’ve missed you.

Time to rush off to class — no rest for the weary! I’ll be back later with another butt-kicking LA Boxing workout — nothing like a hard, sweaty workout the morning after coming back from a long weekend away. Man, was I DRAGGING today! Now it’s only 9:30 a.m. and I already need a nap. It might be a looooong day at class, ha.

Have a good one!

I’d love to know how much it costs the farmers to have the USDA come out to visit them and certify them organic.

  2. 2

what part of Vermont are you coming too? If you are up near Burlington, let me know if you would be game for a bloggers run or something.

  3. 5

I would like to know to how much they have to pay in order to have the USDA Organic people to come out and certify them. Also, what are requirements of the USDA in order to be organic? I know that some local farmers are pretty much “organic” but can’t pay for the “organic label”, like vegetables that you get at the co-op so it would be interesting what it cost to get the label.

  4. 6

you’re going to have so much fun! i don’t know if i have any specific questions, but i will say that i want to know about the cow-milking experience!

  5. 7

How much milk comes from one cow in one “milking” session? How long is the process from milking until it gets to my grocery store in Texas? What new products is Stonyfield working on?

  6. 8

Ask them why they aren’t sold in Trader Joe’s! And by “they”, I mean the Frozen Yogurt (thats the correct use of pronouns, no?). Because it’s AWESOME. And if I could get it at TJ’s, life = complete.

    ;) HAVE FUN!

  7. 9

I know the cows are fed an all organic diet, but can you find out exactly what that consists of? And perhaps how the animals are kept, treated, ect…?

  8. 10

I am interested in finding out, why the choose to farm organically and how it impacts the business planning and profits.

  9. 11

Are you coming through Boston??? :)

I’d like to know if/how they incorporate sustainability into transportation of their products. Stonyfield is now a big company that moved products nationwide, and dairy requires refrigeration. Can they convince me they are the best not just because of the quality, organic products they make, but an overall company policy of environmental stewardship and supporting local farmers??

  10. 14

    Hi Anne,
I’m wondering how/where they get their dairy cows from. Do they breed their own cows? If so, what do they do with the males?

  11. 15

Wow what an awesome experience. Can’t wait to hear all about it! I don’t have any specific questions but it looks like you’ve got a ton of good ones already.

  12. 16

I can’t wait to hear about the tour!! And I know what you mean, I just came home from vacation and all I wanted was a huge bowl of Kashi cereal with almond milk and peanut butter… yum!

  13. 17

    I hope you enjoy Vermont!

  14. 18

I am so so excited for you! I can’t wait to read all about it! Have fun!

  15. 19

I only know 2 things about vermont. That is Ben and Jerry ice cream (yum) and Vermont Teddy Bear company. Have a great time on your tour and take tons of pics!! ;)

  16. 20

Total 4th-grader question, but ….. I’d love to know what some of the cows’ names are, if they even have names!

    Desiree says:

Not really a question, but I thought this was interesting- I just read that Stonyfield Organic Fat Free Lemon Yogurt was voted “best flavored yogurt” by Self magazine in its July issue based on certain nutritional requirements a reader taste tests.

  18. 23

Looks like it’s going to be fun! No questions at this point, but interested in finding out what you learn.

    Jen Williamson says:

I’d like to know what they do with the cows once they are no longer milkable. Do they send them to a cow retirement home where they get to graze and sleep all day until they naturally die or do they butcher them for meat or do they just kill them off once they are of no use anymore? I’ve read that all too often, the cows are simply killed when they can no longer produce milk for profit and I think that’s not very nice. :(

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer! On a happier note, have a great trip! The NOVA area will miss you when you move to NC!

Aw I’m curious/maybe don’t want to know about this, too. I hope they get to play in a pasture all day for the rest of their lives… but I have a feeling that’s not the case :(
