A New Year’s Day Hike at Partnach Gorge in Germany

Happy New Year!

I hope 2011 is starting off well for all of you. I want to do a fun 2010 year in review recap, but I’m thinking it will have to wait until I’m back home from vacation!

Today’s German adventure was a New Year’s Day hike :)

053

My family, Matt, and I headed over to Partnach Gorge to hike and it was spectacular.

046

The gorge is an area where the Partnach River flows beautifully through a narrow, mile-long gap between the limestone cliffs.

SO cool!

056

Apparently this hike is open only in winter, summer, and fall — in the spring it’s too dangerous with all the flooding from the melting ice and snow! I can see why ;)

032

If you ever come to Germany — do this hike. It was absolutely magical, especially with the snow and ice everywhere.

My brother during the hike:

Me and Matt all bundled up:

Matt: “I sure hope these icicles don’t break…”

When we came out the other end of the gorge, the sun had even come out to play!

We had a beautiful walk from the gorge back to the car, too.

Plus, we randomly stumbled upon a ski jump where a competition was being held — television crews in helicopters and all!

079

You had to buy tickets to get in closer, but we were able to watch from where we stood and it was really cool. And scary looking. I don’t know why anyone does this.

084

After the hiking action and a delicious German lunch of goulash soup, bread, and a salad (I tried to take photos but sadly my camera lens was fogged up from being frozen outside for hours!), we all headed back to the hotel for some relaxation. Matt and I hit up the hotel’s outdoor hot tub — epic.

I will leave you all with what might be my favorite photo of the day:

076

We are off to dinner shortly — to an Italian place! We need a break from German food ;) Have a great night!

Nice pictures! I love the composition of the one with the horse through the fence.

I’ve enjoyed the travelogue – beautiful area of the world. Glad to see Matt made it safely and I hope he was able to stay up until 2011. My two cents on the tag line – I agree that “awesomeness” is a bit cumbersome. I go for “Come for the recipes and share the vision” or “…stay for the vision” playing on your overall concept and wonderful photography- you have a great eye. Happy New Year to you and Matt and your family.

I agree with Ben the picture with the horse is great! Those ski events scare the heck out of me as a spectator… yikes! Happy New Year!

Those are incredible pictures! Talk about phenomenal icicles! I would love to visit Germany in the winter, or any season really. I was born there but don’t remember much (we were only there a few years…my dad was military).

Happy New Year. Glorious pictures. Sounds fannetastic. Had a great New Year with my 9 siblings and their spouses, so glad to be back home. Being closed up on a rainy day with 20 people can get tiresome.Love them but glad to be home.
I just signed up to get the Dole newletter. Congrats.

Ah! This was my other favorite part of Garmisch! Looks incredible with all the snow… we walked through once during the day, and then again at 3:30 AM the next morning en route to the Zugspitze summit. It was free the second time :)

  23. 25

    You’re pics are gorgeous!!!
