Just when I thought I avoided getting sick…

Well friends… it’s official. Just when I thought I might have avoided the sickness that Matt and all my friends were laid out with last week… BAM. I’m sick :(

I’m not sure if it’s food poisoning (I had a burger at a restaurant last night and now never want one again) or some sort of flu (it’s very similar to what Matt had, except I don’t have a fever and he did), but either way, this morning I was reminded how much it really, really sucks to throw up. Ugh. After texting the girls that there was no way that I’d be making our 10 mile training run, I proceeded to spend the rest of the day like this:

Such a bummer since it was BEAUTIFUL out today, too! Thank goodness for comfy blankets and sweet boyfriends. When Matt was sick last weekend, I fed him lots of liquids, applesauce, juicy fruit, and soup. Today was his turn to nurse me back to health :) All I wanted this morning was coconut water:

Mmmmm. Nature’s electrolyte drink! Sooo awesome when you don’t feel well (or when returning from a sweaty run). And throughout the day I’ve slowly been adding in some tea, applesauce, popsicles, crackers, toast, etc. I’m starting to feel a bit better now and I think it’s due to these cookies:

Matt made some Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Cookies this afternoon and they are SO good! He even “healthified” them. I’m so proud :) I’ll be sharing the recipe soon because they are AWESOME! The perfect mix between healthy and indulgent.

We’re bummed because we had invited Matt’s brother Chris and his wife Jess over to make homemade pizzas tonight, but we had to cancel considering I can hardly eat/stand. Here’s hoping I’ll be all better tomorrow :)

Question for those of you that are runners: As you know, I’m training for the DC National Half Marathon in March. Should I try to make up my missed 10 mile training run in the next couple days once I’m feeling better? Or just call it a wash, continue with my shorter Tuesday/Thursday runs this week, and pick back up at 11 miles next weekend? I’d love to hear your thoughts :)

At least yesterday was awesome, though! I went on a bike ride after class with my friends Lauren and Jillian and we had a complete blast.

Our plan was to have a nice bike ride and when we got back to our cars, treat ourselves to ice cream. Yay!

It was completely gorgeous out yesterday and perfect for biking. I’m totally a fair weather biking fan — I only like it when it’s super warm and pretty, like yesterday :) It was almost 80 degrees here, crazy!

We ended up biking a little over 10 miles around the beautiful winding, hilly farm roads.

Pretty much the perfect way to spend an afternoon, as far as I’m concerned. Especially when ice cream is involved :)

Our friend Libby came to meet us after our ride for ice cream, too! She just got over her own sickness and we missed her :)

Speaking of biking — I mentioned yesterday that I was going to try out Jillian’s road bike to see if I liked it. And, I did! But I’m torn — her bike has straight handlebars, not the dropped curved ones like most road bikes have. I’m not sure if I should stick with straight handlebars or go ahead and invest in dropped handlebars? I feel like I’d be faster and more aerodynamic with dropped handlebars, but they would also take some serious getting used to.

I’m off to return to lazying around. Bleh. I hope you guys had a better Saturday than I did :)

    Oh man! I hope you feel better!

    Running: If, and only if, you are feeling better tomorrow or the next day, I say make it up. If you aren’t, it isn’t going to kill you or hurt your time if you skip a long run. Trust me on this!! I had to miss a couple long runs due to my pneumonia before I did the Paris marathon, and I ended up doing way better than I thought I would. You’ll be fine!

    Cycling: I would definitely go the curved. It is time for a grown-up bike, girl!

    Awww, you poor pitiful little thing, so sorry your sick. Love the cover and wow, what a man. Good job Matt.
    Love the scenery and I can’t tell you what kind of bike you should get, being as I still have my Schwinn (don’t know how to spell it) bike from when I was 9 years old. 1960. My daddy bought it used and painted it for Christmas. My first and only bike.
    Can’t wait to see what you decide on.

    I hope you get better quick Anne!

    As for the running, I think you’d be fine going from a 9 miler to an 11 miler. While training for my first half last fall I counted my weeks wrong and jumped from I think 8 to 10 so I could be on track again.

    I would say wait until the 11 miles next weekend – if it really is the flu and not food poisoning, you don’t want to push yourself too hard and relapse. You’re a strong runner, so I think you’ll be fine. Getting your health back on track is the important thing! Hope you’re feeling better SOON!

    Sorry you are not feeling well – I developed bronchitis this past week then on Friday ended up with the stomach flu on top of it. I’m just starting to feel human, but have a ways to go.
    Regarding the run, skip the 10 and do 11 next weekend. Your body needs to heal, regenerate and rehydrate! Your immune system is working overtime – this is not the time to tax it further with a 10 mile run. Missing this run will not make a difference on race day. I have run many marathons, half marathons, and triathlons, including Ironman, and am a certified coach. I’m only telling you that so you know I have experience with these things and am not just giving you my personal opinion :)
    Regarding the bike, get the curved for sure.

    I’m so sorry you’re not feeling well, Anne–what a bummer. I hope you feel all better soon! I would suggest skipping the 10-miler and going ahead with your shorter runs and the 11-miler next weekend. I don’t think it will be a big loss for your training. If you try to cram in both the 10- and 11-milers in one week your legs may be too tired to get in a quality run. Feel better and good luck! :)

    I haven’t commented before but have been following you for a bit :).

    First–sorry you’re sick! Nausea is truly the worst…hopefully it passes soon.

    I’m not a runner but I am a cyclist, and I say the drops are completely worth it. On long rides, I switch my hand position frequently (road bikes don’t absorb the shock of the bumps in the road as well as mountain bikes do, which means they go faster but it also means that the shock travels up into your body, which can mean a numb hoo-ha and numb hands…different materials vary (steel vs. aluminum vs. carbon), but you’re going to get a little rattled no matter what) to keep them from going numb, and having three positions–top of bars, hoods (over the brakes) and drops–is a godsend on long rides. Also, like you mentioned, being able to go into the drops when you’re descending is fun to make you more aero. I honestly can’t imagine riding without my drops!!

    As for the run, I’d just skip it and pick up next week. For my first half I skipped my 10 miler because it feel over spring break and I had zero problems. You’re a runner so your body can handle missing one run!

    You know Anne, there are 2 types of these flu’s going around. The stomach flu and the flu flu. I had the flu flu and Toly had the stomach flu. It sounds just like our situation. Feel better soon hun! The good news….the stomach one only lasts a day or two, but the other one lasts nearly a week.

      Blech! Yeah all my other friends had the flu flu… Matt and I seem to have gotten the stomach flu. I feel a billion times better today already, thank goodness!!

    I had a small mountain bike for like 6 years for biking around downtown Chicago with the straight handlebars, because I was afraid of the dropped handlebar road bikes. I made the switch this past summer and it was awesome. It does take a really long time to get use to – it was probably 2 full months until I felt totally comfortable on it. But now I love it and it feels like I’m riding a dinosaur when I switch to my mountain bike for winter riding (I need those fat tires in the winter!)

    So, knowing that it will take a while to get use to, I think you will really like the road bike. Especially if you aren’t biking in downtown Chicago traffic!

    I’m so sorry you’re sick! I hope you feel better. I think that because you’re a seasoned runner that you should just hold out on the long run until next weekend. That way, you can make sure you’re 100% better before you try to overexert yourself. Take it easy!

    Throwing up is the WORST (definitely my biggest fear)!!! So so sorry you had such a rotten Saturday! I’d go ahead and forget about the 10 miles. You will absolutely be fine going from 9 to 11 miles (and honestly if you can run 9 right now, you could run a half marathon next weekend if you had to!) and you’ll feel a whole lot better all week if you focus on getting re-hydrated and re-fueled in the next few days than if you push yourself into more of a deficit state. I’d head into a bike place and test ride a bike with drop bars to get a little bit of a feel for them and to talk to someone about whether you’d need to make other changes (to the brake system) in order to accommodate drop bars. Best of luck and hope you are 100% tomorrow!

    I definitely agree with everyone else — going from 9 last week to 11 next week with all of the other shorter runs in between will be fine. I had to take a week off from my half training (sadness re: IT band, but now I have a foam roller, so all is well), and getting back to it wasn’t a problem.

    As for the bike, drop down handlebars all the way. It’s a completely different way to ride, and I think it’s at least 78 million times more fun — you’re just a more active, controlling part of the bike with the drop down bars. Plus, the increased badass factor is considerable.

    I’m a friend of/grew up with(well she babysat for me)/guest posted on Elle’s blog and I’ve been creepily stalking you for a while. I guess this is my official de-creep comment. So hi! feel healthier.

    I would call it a wash. You still have several long runs left so I think you’ll be fine skipping it. Otherwise, you are going to be doing two long runs closer together than normal when you’re getting over a sickness.

    I’m missing out on 2 long runs due to a surgery, but I’ve been able to easily pick up a 10 or 11 miler after a bit of a break.

    Don’t worry about making up the run. Getting better is more important to your running than making up a long run. Rather than worrying about making up the run, getting LOTS of rest to ensure you’re 100% better is much more important to long distances. If you’ve recently run 9 or 10 miles, then you can run 11 next week. And if you can run 11 miles, you’ll have no trouble running 13.

    Sorry to hear you were sick, moms! I think you should skip the 11 mile run. We’re wired to overtrain and worry about this stuff, but in the long scheme of things, it won’t make a difference. When training for my most successful marathon, I actually ended up missing my 13 AND 16 mile run! In fact, sometimes after taking a “low key” week the rest helps and I come back faster. Who knows!
    I have dropped handlebars, but at my level of biking I don’t think it makes a tremendous amount of difference because I usually keep my hands at the “normal” handlebar spot anyway. But I think since a bike is a long term investment, I would go for the dropped handle bars. See you in the morning!

    Sorry you’re not feeling well- I totally hear you, I was home sick 2 days this week, but thankfully recovered fast because I really rested! CSI definitely helped ;)

    As for the handlebars, I say go with what you’re comfortable with! If I recall from our previous bike experiences (Austin, Italy) you’re all about having fun and getting a workout, rather than racing seriously. So go with whichever you feel happiest on :) You can always just switch out the handlebars without changing the rest of the bike, just like with a seat. Is commuting by bike big down there like it is up here? I’d think the weather conditions would be much more favorable than in Boston…

      Aw I’m glad you’re all better too! You’re right – I’m definitely not trying to race seriously… so I think I’ll just go for what feels best :) I’m leaning towards drop handlebars but we’ll see. Matt and I are going to test ride some later today! Bike commuting is big down here – it would be nice to be able to ride to school.

For what it’s worth, my opinion is don’t push yourself too hard on running more. Read an article the other day that reminded me to “listen” to my body and not push when I am too tired.     I have a mountain bike (with straight handlebars, obv.) and a road bike (with dropped handlebars) & what I love the most about my roadbike is being able to change positions using the handlebars. I don’t think I would road ride ever if I didn’t have them! :)

    Skp the 10 mile and get back to regular schedule when you are able. I’m training for a 1/2 the first weekend in March and had to skip training this weekend due to a full two day class. Trying to double up will just overstress your system and lead you open to injury. Rest up and get back to it as soon as you are able.
