“Cork n Pork” at Rock of Ages Winery!

Well, it’s official. Matt and I have a new favorite winery.

056

It’s called ROCK OF AGES Winery!

048

Is that not the most awesome winery name ever? It makes it sound so hardcore. Like we might be going to a heavy metal concert, not a winery.

058

Matt practiced his best guitar god pose, and I practiced my air guitar just in case.

059

I’m a pro, what can I say.

Then it was time for wine.

024

Yesterday afternoon around 3 p.m., Matt and I were sitting around, wondering what to do the rest of the day. He had just finished up a 90 minute soccer game, I had just run 6 miles (recap coming tomorrow +a SPIBELT review and giveaway!). I decided to check out Yelp — we recently discovered that Yelp has an awesome list of events that you can browse by location, date, etc.

Almost immediately, I saw a blurb about a nearby winery event called “Cork n Pork.” Um… can we get a hell yes?

054

We discovered “Cork n Pork” was going until 7 p.m. at Rock of Ages Winery and would involve wine tasting, music, and BBQ.

We were ready and in the car on our way in 30 minutes flat. Spontaneity is the spice of life :)

063

Rock of Ages Winery is about 45 minutes outside of Chapel Hill — pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The drive was beautiful and so worth it!

035

The winery got great reviews on Yelp for it’s location and beauty, and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

033

Here’s the view from the outside upper patio of the winery:

018

So pretty!

After checking out the scenery, we got right down to business. We had wine to taste!

009

There were 4 tables set up for tastings — sweet whites, dryer whites, sweet reds, and dryer reds. A tasting at each of the tables cost $5. I was really impressed with the staff at the winery — when we went to buy 4 tickets (enough for two tastings for each of us), the lady at the register told us that the tastings were big enough to share. Thanks, lady!

013

Our first stop was the dry whites table.

007

The Chardonnay Oak was our favorite :)

006

While we sipped the wine (the lady was right about it being enough for two — the glasses were small but they filled them almost half way each time we tasted!), we enjoyed the scenery inside! The winery was gorgeous.

016

Although I think they forgot to take down their Christmas decorations. It’s cool. I liked them ;)

012

After taking a breather, we moved on to our second tasting at the dry red table!

015

Apparently I forgot to take photos, but these wines were delicious, too. We especially liked the lighter reds, like the Petit Verdo.

The reason I forgot to take pictures of the wine? Because we were too distracted by the fact that we were basically at a wedding all of a sudden. They had a DJ playing music, and before we knew it… the Cha Cha Slide came on.

In approximately 5.2 seconds flat, all the women in the winery (and a couple brave men) were on the dance floor.

dance1

Clearly I decided I had to join in, too. Matt amused himself by taking photos with his phone.

dance3

Best song ever. Apparently I was so excited I got a little out of step. Disregard.

dance2

Lol.

And then… the song ended and everyone pretended nothing had happened. No big deal. Back to the wine.

outsidewine

After finishing the red tasting, we decided we were done with wine. It was time to move on to BBQ!

Hello, beautiful:

027

It was as delicious as it looks.

Post-BBQ, Matt and I headed out to explore the grounds a bit and take some photos.

031

cool wine me scenery

What a pretty place :)

Looks like you had a wonderful day!! The winery looks amazing :)

  2. 2

That’s such a fun event! I love doing local stuff like that, especially at the last minute! :) Glad you had a fun Saturday.

  3. 3

I’m so jealous of your Saturday!! I had no idea that you could search events on Yelp – I’m so excited to give that a try for my city!

  4. 4

That sounds like an awesome event! And such a beautiful place. I love wineries. Spontaneous outings are the best.

  5. 5

Haha, I love that you are facing the wrong way. That always happens to me in dances like that!

  6. 6

Honestly, between your posts and Kath’s posts about vineyards and exercise and good eating and beautiful weather in the North Carolina/Virginia, I’m becoming despondent sitting here in the cold Adirondacks watching the rain pour down. Thanks for letting me live vicariously through you!

Don’t worry – you’ll be the one laughing in a month when we’re drowning in puddles of our own sweat and you’re out enjoying beautiful cool sunshiney weather :)

Although, NC and VA are kind of awesome. I especially love VA wineries – I went to some great ones when I was living in DC!

I hope you’re right— I’m looking at TEN DAY FORECAST WITH RAIN EVERY DAY…..and starting to wonder if this is a return of the summer of 2008– very wet and cold. Virginia, NC and Colorado (cause we’re skiers) are starting to look like very temperate and sunny relocation spots to me……but it’s all a fantasy, because our careers aren’t very mobile at this point. So KEEP letting me live vicariously! Thanks! :)

How do you search for events? That’s such a great feature!

    • 10

Just go to Yelp.com and in their upper red bar with menu options, the last one on the right is events. Click on it and you can customize by date, location, etc!

  8. 11

Anne, your photography is looking amazing! :)

What a wonderful way to spend the day! :)

  9. 12

How gorgeous (and delicious looking)! The weekends require EtOH.

Your top is so cute, where is it from?

  11. 15

What an awesome post! Spontaneity is, indeed, the spice of life. What a great day… 6 miles, wine tasting, and BBQ! I am green with envy! Well done -

  12. 16

    That winery is beautiful!!

  13. 17

Looks beautiful. We went to the wine tasting at Baltimore House in Asheville last year. This one looks prettier to me.

  14. 18

Looks like a great and upbeat atmosphere that I would not mind visiting sometime

  15. 19

Anne …. what a fantastic way to spend the day! I really enjoyed your post. Gorgeous winery …. grounds. Just lovely.

The unexpected dancing gave me lots of laughs …. love that!!

Did you and Matt bring home any wine? Just wondering what selections. The winery has lots to choose from. Totally awesome!!!

  16. 21

what a fun evening! that is so funny about the cha cha slide! how FUN! did the food cost money, too? sometimes it bothers me when they charge for a tasting. but since you said they were big, then I think it’s worth it!

    • 22

It was very worth it! There were 6 wines at each table to taste and they gave like half a glass of each. The BBQ sandwich was $5 – also totally worth it :)

  17. 23

Looks like you had a lot of fun! Great way to spend an afternoon! Too funny about the impromptu Cha Cha:)

  18. 24

What a cute date day! Jealous.
