Guess what I finally tried this morning? Oatless Oats! I’ve been seeing them all over the blog world lately — it was time to jump on the bandwagon and give them a shot.
Looks like normal oatmeal, right? But it’s not. Oatless oat recipes use eggs instead of oats as their base.
I followed Tina’s Oatless Oats recipe this morning. The only changes I made were that I added the walnuts on top at the end, used regular cows milk, and used two whole eggs instead of egg whites. One thing I’ve learned while in school to become a Registered Dietitian — eat the whole eggs! Egg yolks are AWESOME for you — it’s where all the egg nutrients live.
The recipe was pretty quick and easy to make, which I liked! Just throw it all in a bowl, mash/whisk together, and heat on the stove, stirring constantly for a few minutes until it’s all cooked.
I topped my oatless oats with blueberries, cottage cheese, and some walnuts — my standard regular oatmeal toppings.
So, what did I think? It was okay, but I didn’t love it. I’m big on texture, and I really like things that are crunchy or chewy, which is why I like my Perfect (Microwave) Banana Oatmeal more than stovetop oats — the microwave keeps the oats chewier! The oatless oats had a nice flavor and tasted a lot like normal oatmeal, but I didn’t really like the consistency — it was kind of slimy and smooth. I just missed the chew, I guess! I am still curious to try this variation of oatless oats that uses pumpkin puree, but I don’t think oatless oats will become a regular in my morning breakfast rotation. Oh, well! Bottom line — if you like smooth textures and/or don’t like regular oatmeal, you will probably love oatless oats.
Have you tried oatless oats yet? What did you think?
