CrossFit Fun & Dietetic Internship Update

TGIFFFFFF! It’s been another busy week over here as I’m sure it has been for all of you as well. At my dietetic hospital internship this week, I’ve been working with the dietitian who writes the orders for IV feedings. It’s been interesting — lots of math! I also spent Wednesday at an inpatient long term care facility just to mix things up (and get in some required hours). It was cool — similar to a regular hospital, but nicer in that the RD’s were able to spend more time getting to know the patients since they are there for longer and there are a lot less people total in the facility. The facility I went to is a rehabilitation facility as well, so there was all sorts of cool PT/OT stuff going on all day — lots of great exercise equipment as well as a whole fake little rehab “town” to help people get used to functioning in everyday life again — it had a car for patients to practice getting in and out of, a kitchen where they practice cooking, a grocery store, a post office, etc! Really neat — I was impressed.

Yesterday morning, I went with one of the RD’s at my hospital over to the cardiac outpatient rehab program facility — they go twice per month for a couple hours to provide counseling services to patients who sign up for it. It was really cool — much more along the lines of what I’m interested in doing in the future — I love that in the outpatient setting you can really spend more time working with the patient and providing them information and tips that are more specialized to what they are going through. I saw a couple patients on my own who needed to work on weight loss and diabetes management and I really enjoyed it — I hope they found it helpful, too!

Anyway! Exercise wise, the highlight of my week was Wednesday night’s workout at CrossFit Dupont!

The WOD (workout of the day) was a fun one — and one I could actually do because it didn’t involve shoulder mobility — yay! Here’s what we did:

  • At the top of every minute, complete 2 deadlifts
  • Spend the rest of the minute jumping rope (or doing Double Unders, if you can — I can’t!)

My partner Kat (Hi Kat!) and I were lifting 75 lbs. for the deadlifts. I feel like my form and strength on these is improving — yay!

We did 15 rounds and were sweating buckets by the end of it. Whew!

Next up was 50 “evil wheels” — these are basically an ab strength move. They were harder than they looked!

You slowly slide the bar out in front of you, then slowly slide it back, using your abs, not your arms. Whew!

Great workout. Matt was at a work happy hour and not able to come — he was bummed to miss out on a fun WOD!

Off to work I go — so happy it’s Friday! Have a great one, friends. :)

Those ab roll outs are killer! But I love them so much! I love hearing about your dietetic internship too! It’s so interesting to me because I just graduated with my ms in nutrition and while I chose not to go the RD route, it was and still is definitely a consideration of mine for a long time!

I loved my time with the cardiac rehab crew, too! My favorite rotations were the non-clincal ones. :)

TGIF is right! I start the beginner Crossfit program in August and I’m so excited!

Hi Anne! It was great working out and chatting with you Wednesday night, I loved learning more about how you came into blogging and becoming an RD. I am STILL struggling to walk correctly because my calves are so sore from the jump roping. Love the last photo of you doing the evil wheels, you make them look easy (and they were anything but)!! Overall a tough but super fun workout. Hope you have a great weekend and see you at CF Dupont soon!

I haven’t had to try double unders yet and I’m petrified of when it will be written on the board when I walk in. I’m pretty much as stupid as they come in regards to jump rope, I can handle a basic jump and that’s it. anything else and I become uncoordinated, awkward and lanky. It’s embarrassing!

Haha yeah I wasn’t able to do them at all – plus I had a heavy jump rope that would have destroyed my shins if I tried and failed ;)

Those “evil wheels” are killer I know. Good job on the deadlifts. I did them for the first time Wednesday and tried 80 pounds, but didn’t feel like my form was very good. I think 70 pounds was a better fit for me. Your internship sounds really interesting. Have a great weekend!

Oooh that WOD sounds fun! For how long are you signed up for Crossfit Dupont?

I’m doing a partnership with them via my blog (details were in my first post about them) and we have 2 more weeks left! Haven’t decided what we’ll do when it ends.

I really want to try a WOD, but I’m nervous that it’s going to be too hard! Eek! ;-O! I’m probably just making excuses for myself.

Anne, I would love to do something like that for strength but I am a little afraid. I have had so many bad falls that when I am on the floor I have a really difficult time getting up. I have had both knees and right shoulder out of socket and had to go to physical therapy through out the years. I might check around to see if I can find something more senior friendly. What are your thoughts?

It sounds like Crossfit would not be the best option for you (it’s kind of high impact with all the boot camp style stuff) – I’d stick to what you are doing now, or look for a strength training class that’s a bit more senior/previous injury friendly, as you said. :)

Looks like a great crossfit workout. The ‘evil wheels’ are a killer! Looks like you held your form well :)
