Rent the Runway Fun, Terra by Gretchen Powell & Future Practice Plans!

Hello friends – I hope you all had a nice weekend! On Friday night, I had a fun friend date with my buddy Gretchen. Fun fact: Gretchen is Jenny’s (my high school best friend and matron of honor in our wedding) younger sister! Now that Gretchen and I are both adults we’ve become friends, too. :) Excuse the blurry photo… romantic mood lighting doesn’t lend itself to stellar pictures.

Gretchen and I made plans to hang out sometime last week, and as we were deciding what to do, my friends at LivingSocial emailed and invited me to a cool Rent the Runway event they were hosting on Friday night at their headquarters downtown. It sounded fun and Gretchen is probably my most fashion loving friend, so I asked if I could bring her as my +1. Perfect!

I’ve never used Rent the Runway before but have heard a lot about it; it’s basically a website where you can browse beautiful designer dresses, then rent them for a fraction of their cost. Rentals are usually for 4 to 8 days, and after your event, you simply return the dress. Cool idea, huh?

For the event, LivingSocial teamed up with them to have a pop up showroom in honor of Inauguration weekend coming up. When Gretchen and I arrived, we headed to the press room for some drinks and snacks.

Aren’t the mini pies cute? I had a chili one – delicious, although it would have been better heated. :)

And then we headed upstairs to try on dresses! Neither of us had anything coming up to wear anything fancy to (nor do we have any extra cash on hand, let’s be honest), but it was still really fun to try on what they had. We were both in love with the dresses we’re wearing below – so sparkly!

I also tried on a fun Nicole Miller dress similar to the after party dress I wore at my wedding, just in red! It got me excited to see how my dress looks once it’s dyed!

After trying on a couple things and very sadly saying goodbye to them, Gretchen and I headed out in search of dinner! She’d never been to Matchbox, one of my local favorites, so we decided to go there.

I decided to get two appetizers – first, the beet salad, which was huge and awesome. I could not, however, get a non-blurry photo of this salad to save my life. Sorry – you get the idea. :)

I also ordered the tuna tartare. Love me some tuna tartare!

It came with some super thin plantain chips on the side. I almost felt like I was back in Costa Rica. :)

Thanks for the fun night, Gretchen!

And while we’re talking about Gretchen, did you guys know she wrote her first book?! I am beyond proud of her! Gretchen’s book is called Terra, and it’s a young adult dystopian fiction novel, similar to The Hunger Games or Delirium, two of my other favorite series in the genre.

Gretchen sent me an advance copy of Terra for my Nook just before Matt and I left for our honeymoon and I devoured it within the first couple days of our vacation. I have to say, I was blown away! Gretchen’s a great writer so I was expecting it to be good, but it’s awesome.

Since Gretchen can explain what her book is about better than I can, here’s a teaser from the back cover:

In the distant wake of a plague that has decimated the Earth’s population, humanity is split in two. The rich and powerful live in skycities that float overhead, while those who remain on the ground have gathered in settlements strewn across a dying planet. Eighteen-year-old Terra Rhodon makes her living as a scav, scouring the earth for discarded scraps and metals to recycle for profit. While on a routine scavenging run, she discovers something that shocks her home settlement of Genesis X-16.

Terra suddenly finds herself asking questions no one will answer. Her search for the truth ultimately leads her to Adam – a beguiling boy with a secret that has the power to change humanity’s existence forever.

Sounds good, right? If you’re a fan of the young adult dystopian fiction genre, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of her book. It will leave you begging Gretchen to write book 2 already, just like I am. Congratulations, Gretchen, and now get back to writing! We’re waiting. ;)

Terra is available on Amazon in paperback as well as on Kindle. Check it out!

And now, it’s time for me to get back down to work! I allowed myself the past week and a half to get re-organized – catch up on emails, set up blog partnerships for the new year, do a million errands I hadn’t had time to do before the honeymoon/Christmas, etc., but now it’s time to focus on the new task at hand:

  1. Sign up for the RD exam.
  2. Study for the RD exam.
  3. Kick the RD exam’s butt.

I fueled up this morning with one of my high protein and flour free breakfast pancakes (obsessed), plus a latte. Now I’m ready to tackle the day!

IMG_2352

I also need to start doing some serious research regarding starting up my own nutrition counseling private practice business once I pass the RD exam. Right now I’m considering a bunch of things like:

  • Whether to start a whole new website for the nutrition counseling practice vs. just a tab here on my blog
  • Whether to set up the business as an LLC, an S corporation, or a DBA
  • Whether to use fANNEtastic food as the nutrition counseling business name since I’ve already established that as my brand, or to use something like my full name with nutrition after it or something else – fANNEtastic nutrition? Too many options…

Any thoughts/advice/tips are much appreciated! :) Have a wonderful Monday, everyone!

The Rent The Runway event looks so fun!

  2. 3

that looks like such a blast!! i love that red dress!

  3. 4

Both dresses you posted look fabulous.

I also read Terra and really enjoyed it. It took me a whole 3 days to devour. :)

  4. 6

AWESOME dresses – I’ve always wanted to try RTR.
And I had no idea Gretchen wrote that book! Awesome!

  5. 7

I think fANNEtastic nutrition is perfect. I say go with something related to how people know you – with the fANNEtastic included.

  6. 9

Ah, I didn’t make the connection that Gretchen wrote Terra! I met her at HLS in 2011 and she was so funny and cool! I will definitely have to read it now that I know she wrote it!

  7. 10

Perhaps you could consider setting-up your business as a Benefit Corporation (B Corp). You naturally practice many of the values. How cool would it be if you’re the first B Corp certified nutrition practice! http://www.bcorporation.net/

  8. 12

I love the name of your blog, but maybe a more neutral name would be better for the business? Fannetastic Food is fun, but people who don’t read your blog might not take it as seriously and think you’re a little young to be starting a business? I think something more professional would be better—just a thought!

    • 13

Yeah, I was thinking about that – I do like fANNEtastic Nutrition though just so it ties it in, and I would create a whole new website for my practice, too.

  9. 14

You guys look gorg in those sparkly dresses. And I have Terra on my reader, just haven’t got started yet. I’m excited though, I’ve heard so many good things about her book and you know I’m always down to celebrate a fellow hapa, haha.

As for your name, I LOVE your blog name but I think using your name just sounds more professional if you’re trying to establish your practice. Maybe you can just link to your business from your blog and vice versa? So your blog will still be apart of your business identity, it’s just not the first impression future customers might get.

  10. 16

I think there’s value in incorporating your blog name into your new business. You’ve worked hard to build a brand and and that would be a competitive advantage for you in starting the new venture, particularly if you’re looking to work mostly on-line where you have an established presence. But that’s just my two cents. (And I think I’ve just used more MBA speak in this comment than I have in the time since I finished my degree). Good luck whatever you decide!

    Healthy Eater says:

Keep fANNEtastic in the name (fANNEtastic Nutrition is not bad). That’s part of your brand, and you’re worked hard to esablish it… And neat outings. Well done!

  12. 19

Absolutely love that Nicole Miller dress! There’s no way I’d want to say goodbye to that one. Congrats to Gretchen on writing a book!! Such an amazing accomplishment.

  13. 20

I tried RTR for the first time for a wedding down in NC in August and I loved the experience. It makes so much sense to rent rather than buy, especially when you have limited space in your apartment (story of my life). The website has an area where you can save favorites and that sparkly one you have on is one of my favorites…I just am waiting for an occasion.

  14. 21

So many comments! 1) You and Gretchen look fabulous in your outfits! 2) YAY AUTHOR GRETCHEN!!! 3) I am looking forward to seeing you kick the RD exam’s butt. Perhaps you could roundhouse kick it? ;)

  15. 22

    Hi Anne!!
I have never commented before but this is a perfect post to do so- I am a RD in private practice near NYC (just outside) and I have so much advice for you!! I have been in private practice for about 3 years (1 was very part-time while I figured things out). I could probably talk to you forever about this stuff- I have learned so much from mistakes haha but I am finally at a place where I feel great about things and would be so happy to pass on advice. Contact me when you are free and we’ll figure out a time to talk.
    Jennifer

I’m glad you and Gretchen had such a wonderful time! Good company, sparkly dresses, yummy food..what more could you ask for? I just finished Under the Never Sky and can’t wait to read Terra. It’s so amazing that Gretchen wrote a book! Such talent!
Good luck on your studies! I have no doubt you’ll pass with flying colors!! Fighting!!! (shouted with a fob accent)
I think you should def keep the fannetasticfood somewhere in the name. You’re already famous so why not use it to your advantage ;). Such an exciting research and dilemma. I just turned in my internship application today! Hopefully, if all goes as planned, I’ll start in the fall…keeping my fingers crossed.

  17. 26

I’ve never used RTR either, but I love the idea of it! The dresses looked so cute on the both of you!

  18. 27

Ahhh! I love Rent The Runway–I have done it a few times and it is splendid. I like it because I cannot tell you how many times I have bought a dress to wear to a special event and then only worn it a couple of times.

  19. 28

Such a fun night! I’ll have to see if they do events like that down here!

Maybe this isn’t post worthy, and maybe I could just google it, but I’m wondering if you could explain the differences between an LLC, S corp or DBA (in plain English) ;-) Might be something other bloggers with similar interests have been thinking about:-)

  20. 30

I like the idea of something related to fANNEtastic, but different from food….fANNEtastic Nutrition is good, I will keep thinking! :) ps. red dress = hot!

  21. 31

I have thought about trying Rent the Runway many times but never actually have. Maybe one day. :)

  22. 32

i’ve been thinking about this a lot lately too since i’m facing a similar dilemma. I think you should definitely keep fannetastic in the name. you’ve got a great online presence, but if you’re looking to do in-person counseling as well, i agree with others that Fannetastic Nutrition might be a better choice.

  23. 33

I am an accountant and if I were you I would create a single member LLC. You get the liability protection that a LLC offers but the activity is reported on your personal tax return so you do not have to file a business tax return.

    • 34

I just finished Business Associations at law school. Bottom line I got out of it: LLCs are the way to go. I also figured out that I don’t ever want to do business law and if I ever open my own practice I am hiring an attorney that specialize in it.

  24. 36

Echoing some of the comments above, I definitely think you should tie in fANNEtastic with your practice’s name. Although you started this blog as a hobby, it’s grown to be something so much more and you’ve established so many relationships and networks which fortunately tie in with your line of work. While some could argue that potential clients won’t take you seriously, I think that other potentials will appreciate the blog as it makes you all the more relateable…and gives them confidence that healthy living can be fun & enjoyable despite some of the negative connotations that come with exercise and eating right.

  25. 37

Love Matchbox, and that event looked fun!

I’m a fan of the “Fannetastic Nutrition” name – has a ring to it. :)

  26. 38

I am in the same boat as you! Trying to figure out the private practice side of being an RD is a little overwhelming :) I agree with some of the above comments that you should continue to use your blog name–you have marketed yourself well :) I am currently leaning towards starting an LLC, but am still researching! If I fingure out any important secrets, I will fill you in! Good luck on the exam!

  27. 41

    a) you look stunning in the sparkly dress! and b) the picture of you in the red dress is so funny because there’s a girl behind you in a dress that’s almost exactly the same color and length and it looks like some sort of funky mirror thing going on. :)

    • 42

Haha I know, isn’t that funny? When I first looked at the pic I thought there was a mirror behind me – you can only tell because her dress had longer sleeves! So random.
Oh and c) I miss you!!

  28. 43

Those sparkly dresses look amazing on both of you!

I agree you should incorporate the fANNEtastic brand into your business name, especially if you are going mostly on-line with your consulting, and include nutrition rather than food in the name. But I would probably have a separate site (that could still be linked off a tab on this one?) for a more business-y professional appearance, since not all your clients will be your blog readers.
