Back in Double Digit Land

Well hello again, double digits. I haven’t seen you on my watch in awhile!

Matt and I are heading out of town this weekend, and with my first half marathon of the season looming in less than a month and no long run last weekend because I was sick, I knew I needed to get in a longer run this week. I emailed my running buddy Karen and asked if she was crazy/awesome enough to run 10 miles with me this morning, and what do you know! She was on board. :)

Old photo of us because I dropped the ball on taking one this morning!

We had a fabulous run – cold and sunny and filled with nonstop chatter. The run FLEW by and we both felt great! It was seriously just what I needed to get me excited (and feeling more confident) about all these half marathons! Yay.

When I get up to about 9 or 10 miles is when I start bringing fuel with me for runs. Karen and I took a short break at mile 5 to stretch, eat our gels, and drink some water. My brother swears by these Clif shot gels and gave me some to try – I was a big fan! Love that it has a little caffeine in it, too.

Splits:

  • Mile 1: 9:02
  • Mile 2: 9:14
  • Mile 3: 8:42
  • Mile 4: 9:25
  • Mile 5: 8:42
  • Mile 6: 8:52
  • Mile 7: 8:43
  • Mile 8: 8:49
  • Mile 9: 8:26
  • Mile 10: 8:31

Overall time: 1:29:26. Total distance: 10.16 miles. Overall pace: 8:51 min/miles. Great run – thanks, Karen! :)

I was supposed to meet Matt for lunch but we had to reschedule for an afternoon coffee date instead, so when I came home I threw together a quick lunch similar to those featured in my How to Make a Quick and Healthy Weeknight Dinner post. First, a base of a huge handful of fresh spinach, wilted in the microwave on high for 1 minute. It always amazes me how much spinach cooks down!

Topped with some leftover quinoa and lentils (about 1 cup worth), and some fresh tomatoes.

And on top of that, two fried eggs! Blog reader Elizabeth commented on my dinner post that she and her husband often make similar meals, but top them with fried eggs. I loved that idea – thanks for sharing, Elizabeth! It was delicious. :)

The only thing I wished I’d had on hand to add to the mix was some avocado! And maybe some more veggies. :)

On the side, I had two clementines. Do clementines make anyone else think of the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?” LOVE that movie.

Off to get some more work done – hope you’re all having great days!

Anyone else want to share any great runs they got in this week? Or any great meals they’ve made? Go ahead and brag!

One of my friends is training for a half-marathon, so I tagged along for part of her long run this past Sunday; she did 10, and I finished with eight, which is my new long run of 2013! The nice thing about Olympic-distance triathlons is the run is only a 10-K most of the time. ;)

I am making Jambalaya right now. That is (to me) a great meal!

I’ve got my first 1/2 marathon (ever!) in April and I’m working towards 6 miles this weekend for my long run. I know I’m nearing the point of needing to bring fuel along and trying to figure out what’s going to be best for me. I’ll have to give those Clif Shots a try!

  4. 7

I love the Mocha Clif shots-I think they taste like frosting! :)

  5. 9

I can’t remember that last time I ran double digits :(

Nice run lady! I also had quinoa and spinach for dinner, mmm.

Fried eggs on top make everything better. :) I also love Eternal Sunshine – it’s one of my faves! And go you on the double-digit run!

I love the fried egg on top of things as well! I do that when I make my “healthy” nachos. So so good! Great job on the 10 miler!

    Healthy Eater says:

Great run and nice dinner! Good combination. Excellent times for the final miles, too. Running the second half faster than the first half is the ticket! Well done –

So glad you got to have an awesome run and get it in some girl time. Win win!

awesome idea- i love fried egg on top of pretty much everything ;) its big here on say.. crepes or steak (independently..)

I’m new to the gel shot thing – but the vanilla Clif one is GREAT. Tastes like vanilla pudding! They were handing them out like candy at a 1/2 I ran a few weeks ago, as well as a bike ‘tour’ the day before. I stocked up!

Side note – my husband did some research and figured out how to make the gel on his own. There are a lot of websites out there with ‘recipes’. He makes it to order for his bike rides and is currently using blackstrap molasses, honey, brown rice syrup, cinnamon and ginger. The cinnamon and ginger are add-in’s and DEFINITELY make the stuff more tolerable. He uses a little squeeze tube he bought at a bike shop, but I imagine you could find something similar at Target. I just need him to make me the vanilla flavor and I’ll jump on board.

I’ll have to try the vanilla one! That’s so interesting your husband makes his own. Sounds tasty – and probably good for long rides when you might need more than one – I’m sure that would get pricey!

Great job with the 10 miles! I’m going to be running 7 for my long run this weekend!

  13. 18

Another great feul for long run are the energy jelly beans. Just pop them in your mouth-no messy gel!

I have had bad luck with the Cliff gels or shot blocks. The high amount of sugar really upsets my stomach. I use FRS Chews now. Low in sugar but still gives me exactly what I need to make it through.
