Weekend Adventures (+ win a free 5k race entry!)

Hello my friends and happy Monday!

I had such a nice weekend. I was actually in town for once – shocking, right?! It was a gorgeous weekend weather-wise, too. On Saturday night, I had the pleasure of going sailing!

The sailing trip was organized by the D.C. area alumni club for Dickinson College, where I did my undergrad – hence my awkward name tag in the photo. ;)

We couldn’t have had more amazing weather for a night on the water!

For the event, the alumni club rented out a 65 foot schooner called the American Spirit. It was a beautiful boat!

While on the boat, we all enjoyed some wine/beer and snacks and catching up with fellow alumni and significant others. Matt was out of town all weekend so I went solo, but a bunch of my friends went on the trip so I didn’t mind. :)

We set out for the adventure at 6 p.m. and were out for 3 hours, so we were treated to a gorgeous sunset on the way back.

The boat in the photo below looked like it was a wedding reception dinner cruise or something! How cool would that be?

After the cruise, a bunch of us hit the town – first, we went to Cantina Marina which was right by where we docked in the south west waterfront area (it’s a really fun bar – makes you feel like you’re at the beach!), and then we came back to Arlington to continue the party. I hadn’t been out late in a long time – it was fun! :)

On Sunday, I met my friend Lauren for breakfast at one of my recent favorites – Bayou Bakery in Courthouse in Arlington. Their breakfast biscuits aren’t quite as incredible as my favorite one from Jessee’s Coffee & Bar in Chapel Hill, but it’s a close substitute and still a fun treat. :)

I had them add some roasted tomatoes on there, too – love tomatoes on egg sandwiches.

As for the rest of Sunday, I spent it playing outside! I didn’t have any plans and the weather was beautiful again so I decided to treat myself to a fun “me” day. First up on the adventure was a nice long bike ride!

biking in arlington

I had the best time just tooling around and enjoying the sunshine. I didn’t bring a watch so I’m not sure how far I went, but I’d guess between 20 and 25 miles. I was out for about 2.5 hours!

IMG_0041

I took the Custis trail along I-66, then headed off onto the trail that goes through Falls Church City, then came back and met up with the W&OD trail for a little while, too. It was fun to explore with no particular agenda in mind. :)

I stopped about an hour in and ate half of this new ALT Larabar (I ate the rest of it later on in the ride) – I’m loving these lately. Have you tried them yet? I’m a big fan of the Peanut Butter one and this Cinnamon Apple Crisp flavor. It’s basically a normal Larabar but with some protein added in the form of pea protein. Cool! Stellar ingredient list, too. The only one I haven’t liked so far is the Pumpkin Pie flavor – blech. Normally I love pumpkin pie stuff but it was too dry and the flavor wasn’t great!

After my riding adventure, I spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing at our apartment pool with a magazine. What a nice way to end the weekend. Matt got back last night – he was on a camping/hiking trip with some guy friends. They had fun, too. :)

The other fun thing I did this weekend was running related – I was invited to join Roam Fitness for their “Out Run” workout on Saturday morning, which is a combination running & boot camp. It was a blast – so much so that it deserves its own post, so more on that tomorrow! :)

And for now, while we’re talking about running, I have a fun opportunity for those of you in the DC area!

Have you guys heard of the National Press Club “Beat the Deadline” 5k? Chevrolet is sponsoring this year’s race and invited me to run the race with them as part of “Team Chevy.” And they want to invite one of you guys to join, too!

The Beat the Deadline 5k benefits the ongoing work of the National Press Club Journalism Institute. The Institute is committed to helping working journalists improve their skills through ongoing training and programming of future journalists through scholarships that promote diversity within the profession. Since 2000, and with the help of the runners and sponsors, more than $700,000 has been raised to help deserving students to attend college and pursue a career in journalism. Cool, huh?

This year’s honorary race marshals are Tony Horton, exercise trainer and creator of P90X, as well as Erika Gonzalez, reporter and anchor at News4.

Now for the fun part – one of you guys will get to join me for two events in conjunction with this year’s race! First is a work out with Tony Horton on the evening of Thursday, Sept 5, and second is a complimentary registration to join for the actual race on the morning of Saturday, Sept 7. Remember when I met Tony Horton out in California earlier this year? He’s insanely fit – I’ve done a ton of his P90X video workouts so I can’t wait to see what he comes up with for an in-person workout!

So, who wants to join me?!

Here’s how to enter.

In the comments section below, tell me how transportation contributes to keeping you fit. Do you walk or bike to work? Or maybe you strap the bike on the car and take a ride after work? Or use the bus to get to your yoga class? Or serve as the designated carpool driver for your kickball team? Anything transportation related counts here! Whatever it is, share it in the comments and you’ll be entered to win a spot on Team Chevy and an invite to the Tony Horton Work Out.

BONUS: As part of the race and as members of Team Chevy, if one of us completes the race with the best time (among our fellow Team Chevy runners) we’ll be eligible for a free one-week Chevrolet Spark loan in 2013. :)

The contest begins today and ends on Friday, August 30. I’ll randomly select and announce the winner here on the blog on Tuesday, September 3. Good luck! :) And please only enter if you are free and available on the evening of Thursday, September 5 and the morning of Saturday, September 7!

Have a great day, everyone!

Gorgeous pics! Would love a little afternoon/evening of sailing! Sounds like a great weekend! They don’t sell Larabars in Ireland but I’m tempted to pick up a few on iherb!

  2. 2

I sometimes jog to work on the weekends, and in the winter I’ll walk. But for the most part, I work out separate from my commute. =)

I try to get off the metro a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way — especially when the weather cooperates!

  4. 4

I’ve found that my legs are my main form of transportation living in DC! I walk to get my groceries, run errands, go to dinner – pretty much everything! We also have a dog and like to take her with us as much as possible, so even if a dog friendly restaurant is a bit of a hike, we walk there. These legs have added up quite a few miles since living here!

    What an awesome giveaway! :)

  5. 6

I walk from Rosslyn to work in Georgetown in the morning and run back at night (if I’m not going anywhere after work). Crossing the Key Bridge in either direction is the highlight!

    Chris Anne says:

Years ago before I moved to Annapoli, I used to live in Dupont CIrcle. One summer, I was in between jobs and took a temp job in Bethesda, so the whole summer I took the metro to Bethesda and then roller bladed home. It was a blast! I loved it! I wish I could bike to work now, but alas no bike route to Ft. Meade!

  7. 10

I usually try to do my errands by walking to them. It’s an easy way to get in the chores AND work out! I wish I could bike to work though.

Would love to do this race!!

  8. 11

Walking is a big part of my commute! I start by walking 15 minutes to the train, ride the train for 20 minutes from Clarendon to Eastern Market, and then enjoy another 15 minute walk to work. An hour (roundtrip) of walking makes me feel better about a happy hour cocktail! And it’s a great warm up to my after-work run.

  9. 12

I bike to and from work almost every single day! From my old apartment, it was 10 miles each way, but now it’s only 3. My boyfriend and I use errands as opportunities to also bike or walk. We rarely drive places.

I biked on the Custis Trail for the first time this weekend! We were practicing my boyfriends commute to school (Marymount in Ballston). I was surprised at how hilly it was compared to the Mt. Vernon/W&OD that I’m used to.

  10. 14

I try to walk the two miles home from work on days when I don’t have another workout planned.

  11. 15

I bike to work when its nice enough outside! I also am fortunate enough to be able to walk or bike to classes, friends houses, bars, etc. Perks of living in a city!

  12. 16

I walk to work, run to the gym, bus to spin, and zipcar to group runs. Incorporating being active into every day activities is one of the great things about living in DC.

Such a beautiful DC weekend, right? I walk half an hour to and from work. In addition to being good exercise (especially on those days when I can’t squeeze a workout in), it’s a great way to clear my head at the beginning and end of every day. I also get to walk half of my route with my husband. We were long distance for almost five years before getting married and it’s a nice reminder of how lucky we are to have good jobs so close to one another.

  14. 18

I live really close to work, so I could walk or bike there! Also, I metro into DC sometimes to access all the trails along the river and around VA.

  15. 19

    What is W&OD?

  16. 21

I use capitalbikeshare and bike to and from work as much as I can! I absolutely love it. I especially like looking at my account and seeing the hundreds of miles I’ve ridden in the past couple of months since I got my membership. It feels like such an accomplishment!

  17. 23

I often run home from work.

  18. 24

What a great way to spend the day! The pics are gorgeous!

I’m not close enough to work to drive or bike, but I try to walk a lot during the day and at lunch while I’m there. After work…I drive to my Zumba class!

I walk to/from work! Good additional opportunity to burn a few calories… Looks like a great weekend. Well done — and good luck with your next long run!

  20. 26

My feet are my most reliable form of transporation. I walk everywhere I can: to work, to the gym, to the grocery store, and other errands. When I had a longer commute, I rode my bike to the office. It’s great to be able to combine a workout with your commute.

  21. 27

I love having a weekend with minimal plans! I had the same deal this weekend.

I walk to and from work every day…almost four miles total! I wish I could enjoy sailing, but I get seriously seasick. Blech.

  22. 28

I used to bike 5 miles each way to work and then got pregnant and I’m still a breastfeeding mom so I haven’t started biking again but I will! But my husband and I walk with the stroller wherever we can in our neighborhood whether it’s for a stroll or heading out to grab a bite to eat.

  23. 29

The views are absolutely gorgeous! The trail is sooo beautiful! I would love to do my runs there! :)

  24. 30

My work started subsidizing capital bike share memberships. Now I bike everywhere!

  25. 32

Any chance you know where your friend on the far left got the gray vest? So pretty!

  26. 34

    Sounds like a fun weekend!

I rarely ever drive anymore. I do a ton of walking on a daily basis – to and from the Metro and to run errands.

  27. 35
    Stephanie says:

I wish I could walk or bike to work but Falls Church to Manassas is a bit of a hike each way :) I bike to visit my friends when I can instead of driving or using the metro!

  28. 36

I make it a point to walk home from work (Foggy Bottom to Courthouse) three times a week!

  29. 37

I try to walk to my yoga studio as much as possible (about a mile each way).

  30. 38
    Elizabeth says:

I have a decent walk in the morning as part of my commute to work, and I run as many errands as possible on foot. Thanks for the fun giveaway – would love to run this race!

  31. 39

I live in Downtown DC where driving is a real pain in the neck, so often fitness is my transportation! My husband and I usually walk, run, or ride bikes anywhere we go. It helps us keep in shape, helps the environment, and allows us to see parts of the city we may not otherwise notice.

  32. 40

Just some <3 for the NPC 5K!!! It was my first 5K seven years ago when my boss at the time convinced me to do it. I WAS TERRIFIED but it was awesome. Especially because they had a pancake breakfast afterwards at the time. I was really disappointed after that when not every other race had a pancake breakfast at the end :)

  33. 42
    Christine says:

I would LOVE to run this race and workout with Tony Horton! My gym is 2 miles from my house so I often run to my gym and do some weight training and then run back! It’s a perfect mid-week workout for my half marathon training.

  34. 43

I ride the bus to work, so I have a short walk from the bus stop to my house/work (which I love). I am so glad I landed in DC where I don’t need a car to get around!

  35. 44

What a fun opportunity! I generally ride the bus to work and then walk home from work. I do my best to leave my car at home as often as possible.

  36. 45

I walk to the metro (which is about a mile) and often walk home. I also refuse to drive myself to the gym (I walk or run) unless I am in a crunch for time!

  37. 46
    Heather M says:

My husband and I have just one car so we choose to take public transportation to get us where we need to be when we’re not traveling together. There are times that he needs the car and the forces me to walk, bike or run to places I need to be – like the gym just 1.5 miles away!

  38. 47

I love making my own LaraBars! They are supper easy and I think taste better! Might be a good thing to add to your recipe list!
