Boston Bound for the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half & Festival!

Hi friends! Lots of excitement over here – this afternoon I’m flying up to Boston to join in on the fun at the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Half & Festival! As you know, I’m doing the “Hat Trick” which is a 5k and a 10k on Saturday (essentially back to back), and a half marathon on Sunday. I’ll be back next week to share a recap, but until then, you can see what I’m up to/if I survive on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. :)

My plan for these races is twofold: 1) keep the pace in check, especially during the earlier races (it’s so tempting to race 5ks… must not burn out my legs!), and 2) have FUN! It’s kind of liberating to be going into a race weekend not caring at all what times I finish in. This is all about celebrating running and I can’t wait for the challenge! I was invited to the event courtesy of Runner’s World and will be there with a team of fellow running bloggers. It’s a great group full of many familiar and a few new faces, and I can’t wait to meet/see everyone! I’m also really excited because Runner’s World is taking us all to the original November Project tomorrow morning – I’ll probably take it a little easy on the hill running, but can’t wait to join in on the fun regardless!

On the fitness front this week, I kept things nice and low key in preparation for my run-tastic weekend. On Monday, I met up with my friend Karen for a post-work walking date at 6 p.m. down on the mall. Gorgeous night for it! I <3 friend walking dates – such a fun way to catch up.

On Tuesday morning, I got in a nice 30 minute swim. Love swimming as a compliment to running – it’s a great way to stretch out your legs and the water pressure is nice if you’re sore at all, too. I don’t think my hair is loving the chlorine as much as I am, though – I might need to pick up some UltraSwim – I used to use that stuff all the time back in my swim team days… glad to see it still exists!

Wednesday was a total rest day, and this morning was another swim – 40 minutes this time. Please note my awesome broken goggles. Any recommendations for goggles that are good for people with really narrow nose bridges? All the other goggles I’ve tried are too wide at the nose and let water in, and I can’t remember where I got this super old pair!

No yoga lately because my knee was still bothering me from my bike crash two weeks ago (table top pose was not happening since the front of my knee was super bruised). I was getting a little worried it was more than a bruise, but I’m happy to say that it’s feeling much better now and just about back to 100% normal. Hoping it doesn’t give me any problems this weekend!

I’m off to finish packing (aka pack an entire suitcase full of running clothes only) and to finish up some work before I fly north. Have a wonderful weekend, friends, and hope to see some of you in Boston!

How was your week of workouts?

Have a great time in Boston! :) My week of workouts have been pretty non-existent. My workouts have been more of a spur of the moment style of freeze tag with the boys, hide n seek and monster chasing. Heart pumping for sure… but not as long lasting as I need. :)

    For goggles, try these:

The nosepiece is just a piece of rubber you can easily pull through to tighten, loosen.

Another option is the Speedo Vanquisher. Comes with 3 nosepieces.

Can’t wait to see you soon! Travel safe!

  4. 7

Have so much fun in Boston! I love that city!

  5. 8

I’ve been using the TYR Racetechs for my whole life! I started using them as a kid and never stopped all through my college swimming career.

Also, even if you don’t like those goggles, I love using a bungee strap. It keeps goggles in place no matter what and never breaks:

Hi Anne – Good luck on the races this weekend! I’m sure you’ll do great :)
I swear by Finis goggles – The Lightening model has an adjustable nose piece, but I personally love the Energy model.

Also – would love to say hello this weekend since you’ll be in Boston. I’ll try to come by the race location on Sunday :)

Wish I could pop by to say hi, but I’m stuck at home with homework. It looks like it’s going to be a hot one in Boston! Hope you have fun and enjoy our city!

  9. 15

Good luck this weekend, Anne! I love my Speedo Vanquishers. Just got them a month or so ago and they fit great and are anti-fog. Double win!

Good luck this weekend. I live in Boston and signed up for the half marathon and then got injured so now I’m just doing the 5k. I’ll look for you to whizz past me!
And my favorite goggles usually come from Target! I think they’re speedo brand, but they’re cheap and don’t leak.

  11. 18

Good luck on the races this weekend. I remember reading the recaps from this event last year and it looked like so much fun. Maybe one day I’ll make it there. Can’t wait to read your recaps.

  12. 19

Welcome to Boston! Good luck with all your races!

  13. 20

I’ve always wanted to do a hat trick! I hope you have fun, and I can’t wait to read about it!

  14. 21

  15. 22

Yay! I’m so jealous! Have a great time in Boston!! :D

  16. 24

Hi Anne! Where do you swim around here? I’m interested in getting back into it, but can’t find a great pool in the DC/Arlington area. Any recommendations?

  17. 26

Have an awesome time in Boston! Great workouts this week, I did some yoga, running and some Nike Training Club workouts.

  18. 27

Enjoy Boston! The weather is terrible today, but supposed to be gorgeous for the weekend! I’m running the 10K on Saturday… see you out there!

  19. 28

Good luck this weekend, bummed I can’t race, but I can’t wait to spectate and cheer you all on!

    Roadrunner says:

Sounds like an awesome weekend. Enjoy — and keep that pace in check at the outset! Good luck, Anne!

  21. 30

Have a wonderful weekend away and ejoy your running weekend. I love doing runs without having to worry about times.
have you tried a junior pair of goggles? I have been recommended aqua spheres but my friend have a small face and they are not great for her.

  22. 31

I’m so glad to hear your knee is feeling better!! Also you’ll have to tell us how the Boston November Project compares with the millions of stairs we run here ;) Good luck on the hat trick- I know you’ll do great!

    Tahleen says:

I hope you enjoy Boston and Newton! I live in the next town over (Watertown) but unfortunately procrastinated on registering for the half and it got too expensive. Oh well, next year! Have a blast!

  24. 33

I read about that race series in Runners World. I can’t wait to hear how you did! My workout week was pretty good. I started myself on a new training program and only missed one day of strength training because of an appointment that my son had. Going out today for a 13 mile run!

  25. 34

Check out triswim shampoo and conditioner. Gets the chlorine out and smells much better than ultra swim. You can get it on amazon or they carry it at Tri360.

  26. 35

You may have already gotten the goggle situation sorted out, but I used Speedo vanquishers for years. I swam competitively year round from age 6 through 18 and those were my go-to goggles. They come in a million different colors and you can get mirrored or clear. They also come with a bunch of different-sized nose pieces, so you could find the one that best fits you. Hope that helps! Here are the ones I have, that are a specific women’s fit:
