These Ain’t Yo Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

…but they still taste like them!

Mmm… I love cookies. Give me cookies over cake ANY day!

When I was on Whidbey Island in Washington state a couple weeks ago, my friend Jess made cookies for all of us one night and I just had to share the recipe because they were DELICIOUS!!

This is a nice twist on the traditional chocolate chip cookie recipes — it uses whole wheat flour and ground oats (for a soft, smooth texture) instead of white flour, dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, and olive oil for healthy fats, but leaves in some butter to give them a super decadent taste. These would be perfect for when you want to impress your friends but still have a healthier cookie!


Whole Grain Chocolate Chip Cookies


  • 3/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 C dark chocolate chips
  • 1/2 C dried cranberries (optional)
  • 1/2 C chopped walnuts (optional)


1) Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat two baking sheets with cooking spray.

2) If desired, grind oats in a blender or food processor. (You can also just leave them whole — grinding creates a softer, smoother textured cookie.) Add the flour, baking soda, and salt to the oats.



3) In a separate bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add oil, granulated sugar, brown sugar, egg, and vanilla; beat until smooth and creamy. With the mixer running, add the dry ingredients, beating on low speed until just combined. (You can also just do all this by hand.)

4) Once it’s mixed, stir in the dark chocolate chips and optional cranberries and walnuts.

5) Drop the dough by heaping tablespoonfuls, at least 1 inch apart, onto the prepared baking sheets. Bake cookies until firm around the edges and golden on top — about 15 minutes.

6) Cool the cookies for 2 minutes on the baking sheets, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.



I just got back from an AWESOME 6 mile run. With the snowpocalypse coming again this weekend, I figured I better get my long run for the week out of the way now! I combined it with my scheduled hill workout (see my full training plan on my new training page!) and ran outside in my super hilly neighborhood, finishing in 55:42. I was really pleased with my time considering all the hills! It felt SO nice to be outside in the sunshine (!!), and the temperature was around the 40s — great for running. Yay! My legs felt good, too, since I just did yoga and took a short walk yesterday (no gym due to snow).

Time to hop in the shower and then finish studying (while having a snack and icing my knees/shins with frozen peas, obvi) — we have our first Anatomy & Physiology test AND a lab quiz this afternoon. Yikes!

    Oohh my goodness do they look tasty!! ;) I have only made a whole wheat cooking with chocolate chips and peanut butter and they didn’t look THIS good!!

    Yummy! Can’t wait to try baking these once I get into a normal kitchen! I will me hitting Whole Foods for whole wheat flour, chickpeas, feta cheese..basically everything I haven’t been able to get here…and have a cooking fest!

    I just ate a fresh one out of the oven. YUM. Totally worth the wait in the Snowpocalypse! line at the grocery store so I could buy the chocolate chips to make them!

    Yes, long outdoors runs are the best! Glad you could fit one in. I felt the same way this morning, knowing I might not manage to get out again for a little while thanks to the snow.

    Hey! Good luck with A&P! :) I’ve started putting in wheat flour for my chocolate chip cookies as well with nice results- not that a cookie is very healthy but hey, no one usually even notices the difference on taste!
