Hello and Happy Veterans Day!

I’m still dreaming of my Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal creation from yesterday (if you haven’t made it yet — do so immediately) — so I figured this was the perfect time for an oatmeal-related giveaway! Ya’ll know I love making my own oats if I’m home (check out my Perfect [Microwave] Banana Oatmeal), but when I’m traveling, I’m a big fan of instant packets. So quick and easy!

When I arrived home from my trip to San Francisco earlier this week, I found a massive package full of goodies from Quaker waiting at my door.

003

What fun to come home to, right?!

Quaker has partnered with Biggest Loser fitness trainer Bob Harper in an effort to help Americans jump start their day and reset their mornings in a healthier, more positive way. Their Facebook page has a bunch of fitness tips and videos from Bob about whole grains, breakfast on the go, maintaining a healthy attitude, and more. Sounds good to me! 🙂

The kit they sent me is called their “Amazing Morning Kit” — and they want to send one to one of you, too!

004

One lucky fANNEtastic reader will win a Quaker Amazing Morning Kit including:

  • A yoga mat (cute and non-slippery — I already broke it out last night!)
  • A copy of Bob Harper’s latest Yoga DVD
  • Four packages of Quaker’s new Hearty Medleys Instant Oatmeal in two flavors, Apple Cranberry Almond and Banana Walnut
  • A journal
  • An oatmeal bowl
  • Coupons for more free oatmeal
  • A cloth napkin and spoon
  • A super cute old-school alarm clock

…

How to Enter to Win a Quaker Amazing Morning Kit

…

There are three ways to enter to win; each way will give you an additional entry, so you can do one, two, or all three!

  1. Leave a comment telling me how you take care of yourself in the morning. I take care of myself by making sure I get enough sleep and by taking the time to make a quick but delicious and nutritious breakfast! 🙂
  2. Tweet about this contest on Twitter (include a link to this post and @fANNEtasticfood in your tweet), and then leave another comment telling me you tweeted.
  3. If you have a blog, mention and link back to this contest in one of your posts, and then leave another comment letting me know you posted about it.

…

*U.S. residents only, please.

The contest is open until TOMORROW, Friday, November 12th at 4 p.m. EST, when I will randomly select a winner.

Good luck! :)

Same as you: I have to make sure I get eight hours of sleep and have a delicious, filling breakfast before I leave the house. I'm worthless otherwise!

Happy Veterans Day. I get a good night's sleep, get up with my husband at 5 am, I walk around the block and he runs. We come home and at least 3 times a week I make us a bowl of steel cut oats with cranberries, walnuts, chopped figs. Yummy. It reminds me of when I was growing up. Mama always was the first one up in the mornings and she always had a pot of oats on the stove. Brings back very fond memories.

Before I start my day I make sure to get a refreshing and replenishing 8 hours of sleep! I enjoy a big glass of water, tea (chamomile, green, peppermint) with honey, or the occasional coffee when im having a hard time shaking off the sleepies ;) then I make a bowl of oats!! Either oatmeal raisin oats, or pumpkin pie oats, keeps me full for hours and im always ready to tackle my day.

It is so nice to sip a cup of tea and check out your blog (and read my emails from Spark People) first thing at work. It's a good way to wake up and get my brain to start functioning! After I wake up, one of the first things I do is make a list of everything I need to accomplish during the day. And that way I don't spend wasted energy the rest of the day wondering if I've forgotten something!

A few years ago I realized how much better I feel when I ate it and now I make sure to give myself enough time every morning to sit down and eat breakfast at home before I go into the craziness of work! Although I'm not a morning person, and would love to be able to sleep in later than 6:30 every morning, waking up on time allows me to have some peace to the beginning of my day which really helps to ease my anxieties no matter what is coming.

I usually wake up with the sun to go for a run, then I shower and read blogs while I dry off. Then I make myself breakfast-generally oatmeal or Greek yogurt with roasted acorn squash. Lately I have been on a toast kick though! Then I get dressed and get ready for class. Then I take the bus or bike to campus and walk the long way to class. That's how I take care of myself in the mornings! I exercise, I eat a healthy breakfast and then I stay sustainable by busing or biking to campus!

To make my morning more pleasant, I do as much in the evening as possible. I prepare a healthy breakfast and lunch to bring to work and set the coffee maker to brew automatically. This allows me to sleep a little longer and not worry about finishing too many things before walking out the door. Some good music helps start my day off right, too (:

I always have either cereal with fruit, a fun oatmeal combination, or an egg white scramble. I wake up a little earlier than I need to so I can relax and have some me time before starting my day.

After that, I make myself a big bowl of oatmeal including peanut butter, 1/2 an apple, and some cereal! If I have nuts on hand I'll add them. I'm very in to rituals, especially in the morning; it sets the tone for your entire day. First I like to make sure that I get enough sleep (eight hours ideally!). Then I like to get ready and prepare all of my meals/snacks for the work day. Typically I stop for a soy latte on the way in, and I make sure to drink a big glass of water while I'm waiting on it because I know that's what I really need to wake up. (The latte is so creamy and delicious though!) Then I usually get settled in at work and have a bowl of oatmeal. I've been inspired by your oatmeal creations, and I've been trying some different mix-ins. Some fail (or turn out other than expected), but it's a fun way to start the day with a tiny bit of creativity.

First, I love Quaker products, and I love Bob the trainer! I believe that taking care of yourself in the morning is extremely important for two reasons: it sets my attitude and outlook for the entire day, and it also sets the tone for what you will put in your body the rest of the day. I choose my attitude and think positive. I also pick my breakfast wisely (often searching my favorite blogs for ideas), whether it be a warm bowl of oatmeal, or dry cereal in a baggie partnered with a banana. Happy Veteran's Day ;)

I take care of myself in the morning by getting prepared the night before. I go to sleep at a reasonable hour, laying out everything i need for a smooth morning. I set up the coffee maker, and plan breakfast. In the morning, having all these things ready helps me not have to think about getting off to a good start. I'm not fully awake until like ten, so i'm on autopilot until then. It would be so easy to just wake up late and stop for a sugary coffee drink and a pastry somewhere, or swing by the drive through, but if things are set out the night before, i won't even think about those options.

Wowzers, Quaker, nicely done! I often do just a little workout in the am just to kick the day off right. I walk the dog for about 15-20 min and then usually do a little weight lifting or yoga. Better than a cup of coffee, I tell ya!

I get three children up and ready by myself every morning (husband leaves for work VERY ealry), so I make sure I take care of everything the night before. Backpacks, lunches, my running gear, etc. are all set before going to bed. I still manage to get a good night's sleep and wake ready to start my day. I get my breakfast (greek yogurt, fruit, and oats) and coffee in before I have to get the kids up. It's the only way our family can function stree free!

I take care of myself and my kids by getting up early enough to eat a good breakfast (Quaker's low sugar oatmeal--and I'm not just saying that so I win) and to spend some quality time together before we all head in our own direction for the day. Nothing prepares you for the day like laughing with your family.

I do the same as you: sleep and a good breakfast, but recently I also started drinking 2 glasses of water. I down those glasses as the first thing I do, before breakfast. During a workshop at work a fitness expert suggested it as a way to "flush the system" and get your day started off on the right foot. And I've stuck by it ever since then. Not sure how factual it is, but it definitely makes me feel good and awake each morning. Then I follow that with a yummy, quick breakfast and I'm out the door. :-)

Most recently, in honor of fall, it is: pumpkin puree+cottage cheese+cinnamon+sugar+apple+kashi go lean OR oatmeal... OH EM GEE :D (I ordered 12 cans of organic pumpkin puree on Amazon a couple of weeks ago when I worried about the pumpkin shortage... Ironically, as soon as my order arrived, pumpkin puree made its debut back in stores :P) While devouring this deliciousness, I typically watch The Today Show (giggle out loud often) & catch up on emails...

Mornings are pretty early for me ... I wake up at 5:30 for work. I have learned that I MUST allow myself enough time to wake up. I do not feel good all morning if I rush to get to work. I give myself enough time to wake up, feed my dog, feed myself :), play with my dog for a few minutes, and check my email before heading out the door.

This morning, for example, I had an eggo waffle and a spoonful of mint chocolate chip ice cream, then coffee and a handful of almonds once I got to work. Weird? Yes. I like to make myself a good breakfast of oat bran and chia seeds! I add in banana or applesauce for flavoring, and a little splash (just a tablespoon or so) of half and half on top. Yummy! If I'm in a time crunch or traveling, I will use a packet of instant oatmeal. I especially like the lower sugar and ones with nuts. Even better would be an option with some flavor jazz, like cranberries or apple, yet no sugar at all so that we are free to choose our own. People are so picky about their sweetener of choice that it's hard to please everyone.

Spend an hour drinking coffee, doing email/internet/work, and then work out -- after which it's time for a decent breakfast of fruit and something with whole grains. And oatmeal's great!

I'm not a morning person, so my feet rarely hit the floor until the last possible second, so I set my clothes out the night before so that's one less thing to do, shower with a real eye opening body wash and pack my breakfast to take to work. NEVER skip breakfast!

In the morning I will have a cup of coffee, depending on my schedule have a snack or eat some bfast (oatmeal w brown sugar and cranberries or apples and cinnamon) and then send my husband off to work with a hug, wishing him a great day! So relaxing to just stand there for a minute and relax in his warm arms.

The first thing I do at 4:30 am is to thank the God that created me for another day to serve him and to take care of the body that he blessed (cursed) me with ; ). Then my husband and I have coffee together and then we go upstairs at which point I either do free weights for my bone density and then 30-45 minutes of step or recumbant bike or 45 minutes of intervals on my elliptical. Our dog helps us exercise as well by bringing us the ball in between rests with the weights and having us throw it to him. We then shower and have a hearty breakfast together. We believe the couple that exercises together stays together!

I always go for a small jog or a long yoga session in the morning. combine that with an AMAZING breakfast and a hot shower... woooohoooo ... that's how Ive been taking on Med School for the past 2 & a half years lol I always advise my classmates to do SOMETHING.. ANYTHING.. get moving! WALK UR DOG! U'd think us future MDs would practice what we preach but most of my classmates eat leftover pizza for breakfast or skip breakfast all together. I'm a morning person (were close to extinct lol) so I love working up a sweat, making some yummy oats or a cool bowl of yogurt and granola or a bowl of cereal. MUST GET FUEL! & dont forget the coffee =] (I tweeted @LiviMD)

Oh my gooosshhhh. This is going to sound so SILLY and desperate, but I'm in serious need of an alarm clock. Of all the goodies in the entire package, I would be most excited about winning that (hard to believe when there's such an awesome selection of oats!!). I've been super thrifty lately, waiting for one to land in the consignment store where I take my donations because stuff is really cheap there, but no luck so far! haha. I take care of myself in the morning by always eating breakfast. It's so important!! I love a good filling bowl of oats or cereal with some kind of protein...and usually, banana & pb is a must!! xo.

I work for a corporate restaurant so no steady sleeping, exercising or eating patterns. I make sure I start the morning with a yummy bowl of oatmeal. This is the one thing I am consistent about. I love Quaker Old Fashioned Oats. I do make my own nut butters so the oatmeal is topped with 2 tablespoons of granola & 1 tablespoon of nut butter (usually peanut or almond). PERFECT! If I change it up & eat yogurt or something else... big difference. Does not hold me over like the bowl of oatmeal does.

My mornings are full of routines! When my music alarm goes off (i hate buzzers) I lay in bed and take a few big deep breaths. I find this really wakes up my brain and allows me to grasp getting out of a warm cozy bed. I can think about the day ahead of me and what needs to be done or try to remember a silly dream. Even if I wake up on my own, without an alarm I like to take a few deep breaths and stretch a bit in bed before getting up. After I get up I head downstairs to the shower, and brew 2 cups of coffee before hoping in. After I get myself ready, I always drink a glass of water before eating or drinking anything else. You loose lots of water through sweat throughout the night- time to hydrate! Then I make my lunch and eat breakfast- in varying orders. Breakfasts range from organic yogurt topped with walnuts and/or fruit, eggs and whole grain nutty toast with OJ or fibrous cereal with 1.5% milk topped with walnuts and/or fruit. Sometimes I have time for reading the news on the internet- and others I dont! Mornings are great. :)
