Hello and Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I’ve got a treat for you guys today: a mint avocado banana smoothie, which tastes just like a shamrock shake – but without all that sugar. It’s vegan, too!

The creaminess form the avocado mingles with sweetness from the banana and vanilla extract, plus a flavor kick from the mint – it’s delicious! The perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day (or any day, really). 😉

Healthy Vegan Shamrock Shake

Back in the day, I used to love the seasonal Shamrock Shake from a certain fast food restaurant. I hadn’t had or thought of one of those shakes in years until Matt and I drove by an advertisement for them the other day. Oh my gosh – Shamrock Shakes! I’d forgotten all about those! I decided I had a new mission: create a healthy but still delicious version at home.

I set to work on the project with Matt’s assistance.

Mint Avocado Smoothie Ingredients

The secret ingredient to this healthy shamrock shake? Avocado! Its flavor and texture goes so well with the other ingredients.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this mint avocado banana smoothie:

  • vanilla almond milk (sweetened)
  • banana (the riper, the better! It adds some sweetness)
  • vanilla extract
  • fresh mint leaves
  • avocado (should be ripe enough so it’s creamy when blended)

Mint Banana Smoothie with Avocado

Have you guys ever had avocado in a smoothie before? Matt was super skeptical of the addition but in the end, he became a believer. 😉 Try it – avocado makes smoothies really creamy and awesome, and you can’t taste it. Adds some healthy fat to the mix, too!

To make this smoothie, all you have to do is toss everything into a blender with 1 cup of ice and blend away! Add a mint leaf and/or shake of cinnamon on top if desired.

The smoothie was more green in person than it looks in these photos, but if you want to make it even more green, add a small handful of spinach to the blender. You won’t be able to taste it, I promise!

Enjoy – and have a wonderful day, my friends! Hope you’re wearing green. 🙂 You’ll find the full healthy shamrock shake recipe at the end of this post.

That sounds yummy! Our blender died though. Some friends have ninjas, some have blendtecs, and some have vitamixes. What is your recommendation?

I've never used a Ninja or Blendtec and we have a Vitamix (was a wedding present), so that's what I recommend by default. It's really awesome, though!

i've put avocado in a smoothie once before - it definitely makes it super creamy which is awesome but i do prefer the taste of bananas in smoothie to help with the cream factor

The combo of banana + avocado was perfect! I love bananas in smoothies - makes them nice and sweet without adding extra sugar.

The last time I had one of the real ones I actually didn't like it anymore - too sweet/fake tasting for me now! This version was way better. :)

I was thinking of adding peppermint extract, but I couldn't find any at the store! It's popular this time of year, apparently!

I read on another blog this morning that the original shake has 530 calories. Yours rocks. Can you one day maybe this summer create a pineapple one with pineapple being the only fruit you use?

Wow, that's crazy! Remind me about the pineapple when the weather warms up - I can definitely do that! :) Do you not eat other fruit?

I love fruit. It's just I have always been confused on how to just make a pineapple smoothie/milkshake that doesn't taste too sweet without adding bananas or apples. I wouldn't mind spinach leaves in it but once you start adding other fruits, it's not just a pineapple smoothie anymore.

I used to make smoothies with coconut milk, ice, and 1/2 of an avocado. I LOVED them but started getting the worst epigastric pains for like, an hour after and would have the worst bathroom problems right after (TMI?). I figured my gallbladder couldn't handle processing so much fat in a liquid form like that, so I had to quit drinking them. But they are delicious!

This was delicious! Way better than the original! I tried to make it without my husband seeing the ingredients. No such luck. At the sound of the blender he was at the kitchen door and spied the avocado peel. Only when I told him it was one of your recipes did he agree to try it. We both loved it! Thanks, Anne!
