How Does Firstleaf Work?
You start by taking a short quiz (simply click “Take the quiz” in the upper right corner of their website) to tell Firstleaf about your wine preferences.
I thought about taking the quiz on my own, but Matt is a huge wine fan as well (he was SO excited when I told him about this partnership) so I wanted to include him in the process since we’d be sharing all the wines.
Matt and I had fun taking this quiz together and discussing what types of wines and flavors we like best. Luckily we agreed on pretty much everything, although I tend to not like quite as heavy/full bodied red wines as he does. Have no fear, though, we were able to meet in the middle. 🙂
The quiz starts with more general questions:
Plus a little bit about specific wines (and you can say “I’m not sure” if you aren’t, which was helpful), and a question about how adventurous you wanted your wine selections to be:
The quiz then moves on to assess which flavor profiles you like via a series of questions about different foods. We thought this was a cool way to do it, especially for someone who doesn’t exactly know what kind of wine they like but who can certainly say which foods they do and do not like!
Once you have completed the quiz, Firstleaf then uses the information to create a custom taste profile for you, and, based on your taste profile, they select six wines to send you.
Firstleaf winemaker experts sample over 10,000 wines each year at vineyards (from 5 continents and 12 countries) and select only the finest bottles to include in their shipments.
They have over 82 million combinations of boxes possible and 98% of the monthly boxes are completely unique. Their advanced quiz and ratings system has been found to recommend wines you’ll love with 96% accuracy – pretty amazing!
Matt and I tend to get in wine ruts, especially as we usually do grocery delivery vs. going to the store in person, so we love that Firstleaf makes it possible to try something new without all the guesswork, time intensive research, or risk (because the wines are customized to flavor profiles you enjoy).
As for our first box, here is what our selections were after we took the quiz! We liked that once our selections were presented to us we were able to either accept them as is, or swap them out for something else similar (from a couple options) that still fit our taste profile.

A few days later and our wines were at our door! They came packaged in a recyclable and anti-break box.
I loved that each wine came with its own tasting notes card to help you learn more about the specific wine, where it came from, and what it would pair well with. They also include a scale rating for each wine in terms of body, acidity, sweetness, and tannins, which is helpful information as you learn more about which kinds of wine you tend to enjoy.
Here’s where Firstleaf really shines though: once you drink the wine you receive, you rate them in your profile, and Firstleaf will use that information to refine your taste profile over time, meaning every subsequent box should be even more likely to knock it out of the park. Love that!
