What a fun weekend! DC had gorgeous weather (which is VERY unusual for 4th of July – it’s usually brutally hot) and Matt and I took full advantage.

On Friday morning, I got in a nice run – 5 super hilly miles – and then Matt and I parked ourselves at our apartment pool for the day. That evening, we watched the DC Fireworks via kayak with my friend Ashley!

On Saturday, Matt and I met up with my childhood friend Stephanie, who was in town visiting, and her fiancé Alex. First stop: LPQ for brunch. Steph and I shared – I got the tomato avocado omelette and she got the summer special pea and cheddar quiche, and we split.

Then it was off to Great Falls Park (the MD side) for a hike!

It was a perfect day out which meant all of DC had the same idea, so it was PACKED out there. We took a quick visit to the overlook to see the views…

And then decided to avoid the crowded Billy Goat Trail and instead hiked around on some of the wooded trails on the other side of the canal.

Everyone was apparently on the Billy Goat Trail because it was empty in the woods! Perfect. 🙂 Crowded hiking = not fun.

As for the rest of the weekend, I didn’t get any photos, but we spent it enjoying a BBQ at a friend’s place on Saturday night, met some high school friends for drinks on U street, and did a little more pool relaxing and brunch-ing, too. I also got in a nice 75 minute yoga class yesterday at Edge Yoga, my local fave.

How was your weekend? Have you ever watched fireworks via kayak before? I saw some people out there on paddleboards watching them, too!

p.s. Today is the start of the final week, week 4, of the Summer Shape Up! If you’re participating, click here for your week 4 meal plan from me, and click here for your week 4 workout plan from Gina! I’m looking forward to a week of healthier eats after a pretty indulgent weekend (although at least I stayed active)!

I LOVE the firework pics you took Anne! I think my 4th of July in DC was by far the most spectacular. I agree, I 'indulged' but all is well when you know how to compensate right!

I wanted to try to watch the Philly fireworks via kayak after reading about your experience last year, but apparently no companies around here rent kayaks for the fireworks. Boo. So we settled for watching them at my old university instead. Probably for the best since it's insanely difficult to get out of the city once the fireworks are done!

It sounds like you had a great 4th weekend! The weather was IDEAL here too- I was at a pool party and it was warm enough to get in and enjoy the water, but not too hot so I wasn't dripping sweat.

Gorgeous pictures, per usual. I aspire to have some that pretty someday! Glad you had such a fun weekend. I got to try a bunch of different fitness classes with a ClassPass - Flywheel, TRX, and a super relaxing yoga class. Good times!

That's awesome that you saw the fireworks from a kayak! I watched them from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial last year. It was a blast!

Sounds like a beautiful weekend. We stayed in DC as well and enjoyed lots of ice cream (it was so nice in the heat to eat) and did lots of walking around the city and zoo!

Sounds like you stayed very active, it was such a nice weekend. I watched the fireworks in Philly from my front porch, but next year I would love to watch them by kayak, love that idea. I was out on U street also on Saturday night (a Sunday morning workout did not happen but I had a lot of fun visiting my friends in DC).
