Return to Track Workouts!

This morning marked the start of operation: get my running speed back!

IMG_2498

My friend Sokphal and I took our standing Tuesday a.m. run date to the track. We ran the 1.75ish miles to get there, and once there, we decided to do a 2 mile workout. For 8 laps, we jogged the curves and ran hard on the straights. I love this track workout – it’s one I used to do in grad school at UNC on their baby blue track. It’s nice because you can chat on the curves, too, so it still feels like a fun social outing. 🙂 We probably did about 7:30 min/miles on the straights and 9 on the curves? Felt good to pick up the pace!

IMG_2497

We ended up covering about 5.5 miles total, including the 2 mile track workout. Our splits:

  • Mile 1: 8:46
  • Mile 2: 7:57
  • Mile 3: 7:24 (!)
  • Mile 4: 8:54
  • Mile 5: 8:48
  • 0.5 mile nubbin: 8:22

We apparently picked it up again on the run home in that last half mile! Great splits – since I’ve been doing all.the.marathons this spring I’ve been doing longer, steady/comfortable pace runs week in and week out and it feels good to mix it up again. Hizzah!

And now, for some sweaty/half asleep workout photos! On this morning’s run I had the pleasure of testing out a pair of shorts and a tank from the Target® C9 activewear line.

IMG_2491

I’m a huge fan of Target® in general (essentially half of my wardrobe is from Target® – I may or may not have also bought a dress while I was at the store getting this workout gear), but I also really love their activewear, so I was excited when they reached out to me about this review! Back in 2005 after college when I was just getting more into running, I bought a TON of Target® workout clothes to get myself started and still have most of them to this day. Their stuff is super affordable, durable, and really cute, too. I also love their sports bras!

This morning I was rocking the Women’s Run Short with Knit Waistband in navy blue ($16.99) and the Women’s Sporty Layered Run Tank in navy blue/light pink ($22.99).

Target C9 activewearPlease note the fluffy photobomber

I loved both items! The shorts are really comfortable and extremely lightweight – the wicking/quick dry material feels like soccer shorts or windbreaker material, and I like that they were short and fitted but not super duper short. There are built in briefs and a little pocket on the inner right front for keys. I also loved the wide, comfy waistband – not too tight but snug enough to stay on. And this is random, but I really like that the waistband tie is on the outside, not the inside like most shorts. Usually it leaves an awkward bump when it’s on the inside!

As for the tank, loved it too! Super cute and extremely comfy/functional – it kept me cool and dry for our track workout. I like that there is a built in sports bra, but that the rest of the tank was detached – that’s such a cute, popular look right now and it helps to keep you cooler, too. I also like that it was loose (but not billowy) and long. Perfect for summer.

They have the tank and the shorts in all sorts of colors. I would totally buy both of these items with my own money – two big thumbs up. Cheap, cute, functional, and fit well! Win.

When I got home, I hit our apartment gym to stretch out and to do this 5-minute shoulder workout. It was great – try it yourself! Also, I realized the instructor is wearing the exact same outfit as me. She clearly has excellent taste with color combos. 😉

And now, coffee. Have a great day, friends!

Do you own any Target® C9 activewear?

Are you a track workout fan? What’s your favorite track workout?

Disclosure: This post was sponsored by Target® C9 through their partnership with POPSUGAR Select. While I was compensated to write a post about Target® C9, all opinions are my own.

I rarely do track workouts, but my goals for fall races is to work on my speed, so I will definitely be throwing some into the mix. Agreed to loving Target, I have a few of their athletic pieces and they work great and are super cheap compared to most bigger name brands!

I LOVE Target's line of workout clothes. Perfect for my budget and always a great quality. I ran a similar workout today. 5.25 miles with about 7 400's at an 8 min pace thrown in. I can't keep using heat as an excuse to slack on my speed work!

I do like track workouts! I love them because it usually means I'm doing it with a friend. In the last 9 months or so, the track has really hurt my quad. Even switching directions doesn't seem to help, so I've backed off. I now plan to do most of my speed on the treadmill. Meh...oh well :(

Oh no! I hope you're better soon! Just one side? Maybe switching directions on the track would help?

I wonder, too, if some dynamic stretching beforehand and some warmup laps (skipping, karaoke, running backwards, striders -- you know, all those things that make you look crazy) would help. another thought -- if you're coming to a full, sudden stop after each rep (instead of slowing down over a few last steps), that could over-stress your muscles.

Target has great workout gear! I also love the store in general for all my purchases, but my favorite running (and just active things in general) tank top is C9 and I have a couple tanks that have a built in shelf bra (usually NEVER works for me) and are flowy, and I really love them for hot yoga. Super soft and comfortable but not constricting so that I'm self conscious in all my positions! The sports bras unfortunately aren't high impact enough for me since I'm top heavy but I love everything else they have!

Gotta love inexpensive workout wear that can handle running in DC summers! Hit up my first track workout last week, now onto hills this week as part of marathon training.

I try to avoid the track at all costs! Memories of track from High School and Junior High: nervous, nausea, diarrhea, throw up Haha that's why! I love to push myself on my runs though by timing myself--as a sub for a track. I'm all about improving my times. Nice mile times! That's hard work, hope it pays off!!

Basically all of my workout clothes are from Target. I can't go in there without picking up at least one new thing. I'm also looking to add some speed workouts back into my life. Ins and outs are such a great way to do that without feeling intimidate by some crazy speed workout. Always a good go-to!

I've been wanting to get back out on the track! I know it would help with speed training but ever since high school I've had the hardest time getting out there! I love jogging curves and sprinting the straights though, it makes the whole run go by faster to me!

Well done getting back on the track. But, as you progress, I think you need to start timing your quarter-mile splits, running one hard, then jogging one, then hard again, etc. And you need to set a goal for your hard quarters, such as 1:40 or so. Make sense?

Target in Australia is very different to the US. We don't seem to have the same range or quality. I've never run on an actual track (another thing that is not that common here) but I love speed sessions with my running group!

I've never done track work. All the tracks near my house are closed off to the public :( But I'll do speed intervals on the treadmill. It's the only time I like the treadmill =) I like Champion stuff. I just have a hard time with built in sports bras because I require the extra support only found in sports bras that I get from Moving Comfort. I tend to buy lots of winter attire there though....3/4 zip up shirts and capris or tights.

I love that workout for getting back to the track! It's a fun, not scary but still challenging workout that really works. I also love Target workout clothes. I have a couple of running outfits, plus some pretty yoga tops that are great.
