Oatless Oats

Morning, friends!

Guess what I finally tried this morning? Oatless Oats! I’ve been seeing them all over the blog world lately — it was time to jump on the bandwagon and give them a shot.

Looks like normal oatmeal, right? But it’s not. 🙂 Oatless oat recipes use eggs instead of oats as their base.

I followed Tina’s Oatless Oats recipe this morning. The only changes I made were that I added the walnuts on top at the end, used regular cows milk, and used two whole eggs instead of egg whites. One thing I’ve learned while in school to become a Registered Dietitian — eat the whole eggs! Egg yolks are AWESOME for you — it’s where all the egg nutrients live.

The recipe was pretty quick and easy to make, which I liked! Just throw it all in a bowl, mash/whisk together, and heat on the stove, stirring constantly for a few minutes until it’s all cooked.

I topped my oatless oats with blueberries, cottage cheese, and some walnuts — my standard regular oatmeal toppings.

So, what did I think? It was okay, but I didn’t love it. I’m big on texture, and I really like things that are crunchy or chewy, which is why I like my Perfect (Microwave) Banana Oatmeal more than stovetop oats — the microwave keeps the oats chewier! The oatless oats had a nice flavor and tasted a lot like normal oatmeal, but I didn’t really like the consistency — it was kind of slimy and smooth. I just missed the chew, I guess! I am still curious to try this variation of oatless oats that uses pumpkin puree, but I don’t think oatless oats will become a regular in my morning breakfast rotation. Oh, well! Bottom line — if you like smooth textures and/or don’t like regular oatmeal, you will probably love oatless oats. 🙂

Have you tried oatless oats yet? What did you think?

Although as an RD I appreciate the yolk, I still usually ditch half of them for calories' sake. I'm not crazy about the oatless oat idea. :)

I have had them and loved them. But agree they can be a bit mushy at the end. I tossed in some chia seeds for a crunch. With a drizzle of maple agave.

I still have yet to try the "oatless oats" too - I have a feeling I'd have the same take on 'em as you did. I think I'll just continue to eat my eggs like eggs, and my oatmeal with oats :)

I haven't had oatless oats but I did try your perfect banana oatmeal yesterday morning and it was a fantastic start to my day! I'm definitely ditching the sugary oatmeal packets.

I don't think I will try it cos I am like you, and enjoy the texture of oats. I did try a brown rice breakfast this AM though, with 1/2 cup cooked brown rice, cooked with almond milk and half a banana - it was really good!! mixed in chia seeds and cinnamon and it was the perfect breakfast for a chilly start to the day!!

I call myself the "Oatmeal Doctor" because of all the zillions of oatmeal recipe creations I've come up with over the years--so I just haven't been able to bring myself to try this yet. Egg yolks are wonderful for you, so thank you for giving them some love in this recipe. :) I unfortunately don't love the taste of them, so I don't have them in any of my recipes as of yet.

I haven't tried them yet because oats are one of my FAVORITE foods! Would it be worth giving it a try (I would try the pumpkin link you listed) or jsut stick with yummy oats?

Interesting, Anne, but I think I will pass on this one. The only way I eat eggs is when they are cooked into something such as your scrambled egg muffins. But, it's still interesting.

Thank you for that line about using whole eggs. Why don't more people understand this? Even someone I know who is an RD tried to tell me about the evils of egg yolks recently. I've read that the yolk helps your body use the protein that is contained in the white. It would be awesome if you could elaborate more on the egg white/egg yolk conundrum on your blog!!

I haven't tried them yet, but I'll definitely use the whole egg when I do. I always either use the whole egg or avoid egg white recipes because I splurge on farm fresh eggs and absolutely refuse to waste that gorgeous almost-orange yolk.

I have actually never heard of oatless oats before! I think I would feel the same way you do though about the texture being off. I love eggs, but I am not sure I want them to replace my oats!

I don't think I will try them, look interesting though but the fact is my breakfast takes about 3 mins to put together: ] 1, heap in 30g of oats into a small bowl, 2 top up with water, 3 microwave for 2 mins. It then takes a similar amount of time to wash up the 1 bowl and 1 spoon I've used. If I were to make the oatless oats I would have several pots and spoons/whisks as well as an added expense to pay for it all. Sorry, can see the fun but I think I prefer oats with my oats IYSWIM!

I'm not a fan. I'd rather just have oats when I want oats and eggs when I want eggs :). It's refreshing to hear your take on eating whole eggs. I like to scramble 3 egg whites with 1 egg but I might switch to 2 and 2!

I haven't tried them... When I went Paleo for 30 days, I missed oatmeal like crazy. When the 30 days was over I couldn't wait to have a bowl. Now when I do I just try and mix in egg whites so I'm still getting a lot of protein for breakfast. It's a good compromise for me.

Yeah I was thinking maybe I'll just try adding one whole egg and taking out a little of the oats in my normal oatmeal - that way I still have the nice chewy texture, but also the extra protein/staying power!

I started eating oatless oats a few months ago and LOVE it. I just zap mine in the microwave for 3 mins (stirring every 30 seconds). My favourite topping is strawberry! Yum :)
