A Freezing Run, Lunch & Teaching!

Well, my friends, I did it: I braved the extreme cold here in DC yesterday and got in a run. A solo run, even! Apparently wanting a run to be over quickly leads to speed. I’ll have to remember that. 😉 Brrrr… no photos, all business for this one. Got it done!

As for today, enjoying a rest day. Back to running tomorrow!

I’ve been busy running around all over the place for work stuff this morning, and just got home and sat down to a quick lunch. I made a big salad with peppers, mushrooms, feta cheese, and some canned tuna mixed with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Easy and tasty!

IMG_5143

I also had some unpictured hummus, salsa, carrots, and crackers while making the salad. 🙂 I’m obsessed with the Blue Diamond artisan nut thins lately! Super crunchy and tasty but healthy, too. My fave is the flax seed one.

As soon as I finish lunch and catch up on some emails, I’ll be spending the rest of the day preparing for class next week! Yes, you read that right – class! No, I’m not starting school again – this time, I’ll be teaching it!

IMG_5140

I just accepted a position as part time faculty at George Washington University to teach their Basic Nutrition course this spring to undergrads! Cool, huh?! I saw the listing on my DC Dietetic Association’s listserv a few days before Christmas, sent a quick email of interest along with my resume, met with them in person two days later and was offered the gig on the spot! The course is in the exercise science department under the school of public health at GW, so their team loved that I have my Masters of Public Health from UNC. Perfect fit! I’ll be using the same book for my course that was used when I took the equivalent to this course at Northern VA Community College as a grad school prerequisite back in early 2010. They have a separate lifestyle nutrition course, so this one is meant to be more science-y in nature, but I’m looking forward to also having some good discussions about nutrition hot topics and current fad diets/things in the media as well.

I’m really excited – it will be great to get back into academia again, and back to teaching, too (as you may remember, I taught English for a year in Prague before I went back to grad school).

IMG_5144

So – between teaching (the class meets 2x/week), my AnneTheRD nutrition counseling client work, starting to see sports nutrition clients at the Endurance Athlete Center, and my blogging/freelance writing, it should be a VERY busy spring, but you guys know I do best when I’m overbooked. 🙂

And now – time to finalize my syllabus and start preparing my first couple lectures – classes start next week!

Have a wonderful day, everyone!

Congratulations! I used to teach composition part time at local colleges and I loved it. I miss it so much. It's so fun to be around students and I love the academic world. What Garmin do you use? I got a $100 gift card to Amazon for Christmas and I'm thinking I'll use it for a GPS watch. Any recommendations?

Congratulations on the teaching gig, Anne! I spent almost 10 years teaching undergraduate communication courses (public speaking, interpersonal comm, group comm, gender and comm, etc.) while studying for my Master's and then for a career shortly thereafter. I've been out of teaching for two years -- since I had daughter #2, but really miss it when it comes time for what would have been my new semester prep. Maybe I'll go back to teaching one day after my children are grown. I really loved making a difference while being able to do something I was so passionate about. For now, I'm enjoying my time as a stay-at-home mom. Although, I've been doing some public speaking lately (encouraging blood donation and such) and got a chance to speak at a press conference and be interviewed by three news stations this past Monday as January is National Blood Donor Month. I'm so thrilled for you that you're keeping yourself busy with what you love -- life doesn't get better than that! Happy prepping!
