A Weekend of Workouts on the National Mall

Hello my friends! First things first – keep those awkward running photos coming for the Brooks contest! I’m getting so many good ones that I need another day to decide, so you get another day to enter! I’ll share the winner tomorrow, along with all the other photos I’ve received. Check back tomorrow for a good laugh. :) I’ve gotten some HILARIOUS ones!

I hope you all had fun and active weekends! Mine was great – a good mix of fun and relaxation.

We had some gorgeous weather here in DC so I took advantage of it by being outside! On Friday, my friend Ashley and I did a casual run/walk down to the monuments. It was so nice out!

As you can see, the Washington Monument is having a little work done right now. Get well soon, monument! (It was slightly damaged in the earthquakes DC had awhile ago.)

I had dinner at a friend’s place on Friday night and was back down on the national mall bright and early on Saturday morning for a fun CrossFit on the Mall workout!

Fellow DC fitness blogger Amy is a member and coach-in-training for a group of CrossFit gyms in D.C., and they hosted a free outdoor CrossFit workout to bring together like minded fitness lovers and to give those who hadn’t tried CrossFit yet a taste of it! Sounded fun to me – especially since the weather was absolutely perfect on Saturday morning.

In addition to Amy, it was also great to see fellow fit bloggers Meaghan and Ericka. Go team DC bloggers!

I have to say – the hosts did a great job of making the workout fun (and keeping it organized), even with such a large group. I was actually pretty sore yesterday, too! It was hard!

There were 5 stations and we were divided into teams of 3 and given a sandbag. We did a workout at one of the stations, then walked farther down the mall for another station and a new workout!

Each of the stations involved some sort of sprint, some sort of sandbag move, and some sort of body weight move.

For example:

  • 1 team member sprints to a monument/museum and back
  • Meanwhile, team member 2 is doing lunges or squats holding the sandbag
  • And team member 3 is doing burpee broad jumps, or pushups, or situps
  • When the sprinter is back, you switch and repeat until all 3 of you have done each of the workouts.

It was so much fun. :)

Dear Mom, Thanks for signing me up for gymnastics when I was little so that I can now impress people with my handstand abilities. :)

Thanks for the great workout, team!

The rest of our weekend was filled with the pool, BBQs, a fun late night out with friends on Saturday, and on Sunday we cleaned our apartment, relaxed, and went out to dinner with family.

How was your weekend? Any great workouts? Feel free to brag! :)

Looks like a fun weekend! I love the handstand pictures. I was at a wedding in North Carolina and had a wonderful time. The wedding was beautiful and it was a fun reunion with college friends. I even snuck in a run the morning after the wedding :)

  2. 3

I cannot wait to see all of the funny running pictures. I have had my share of terrible, terrible race photos and I love seeing awesome costumes and signs while running.

My weekend? Kind of awesome since I got engaged :) It does not feel any different, but lots of family and friends are reaching out and it is a good excuse to catch up with people I do not talk to regularly.

  3. 5

Looks like so much fun!!! :)

  4. 6

I love outdoor workouts in the summer! I did an outdoor boot camp in Central Park and I’m still sore today!

  5. 7

Seeing all your pictures makes me want to move to DC! I would LOVE to do my morning runs around the monuments. Love that city! On a side note, I just noticed that you are running Beach to Beacon in August! I live in Maine and ran that race last year. Such a fun day (and usually always a hot one too). I won’t be running it this year due to Ironman Lake Placid the weekend before but I will definitely be keeping my eye out for you!

I’m SO excited! I’m running it with Cabot Cheese as part of their Cabot Fit Team with a few other bloggers. I hear it’s an amazing race!

  6. 9

Looks like such a fun time! I love all the outdoor workouts you have available living in a larger city. That’s something I’d like to bring out to the burbs by us. :)

    Looks like fun, Anne.

FYI. Had my quarterly check up today and got good news that my doctor is reducing my diabetic meds. Lost 50 pounds in 2010 and lost 25 more this year. I’m proud. Thanks for keeping me motivated.

My weekend was awesome :) I just came back from Canada. (I will post a recap on my blog soon)
I did my first ever treadmill workout on Friday evening, and was insanely proud of myself for never going below a 7.4
    D.C. looked awesome!

    Rockin’ handstand :)

  10. 15

Looks like a fun weekend! :-)

  11. 16

Good work on the handstand :)

I did a circuit workout for an hour and then was feeling a little nutty so followed it up with an 8km run.

  12. 17

It DOES look like beautiful weather! It was pretty here too, but I live in Alabama, so it’s H.O.T! How fun to be able to connect with friends through exercise. I wish there was something like that here I could be a part of.

    PS. Nice handstand. Super impressive!

What a fun day!! I love mixing up workouts, especially if they involve being outside!! I got a few great workouts this weekend. My boyfriend took me to the new gym on base and I fell in love! I ran on the treadmill for the first time since I graduated last year, and I also climbed 120 flights of stairs on the stair-master. A few years ago I wasn’t a big fan of the stair master because I didn’t think it was a good workout. I was proven wrong! I was a sweaty mess!! It was fun, too. The machine showed you the equivalent of flights you climbed, to national and worldwide landmarks. So, with my 120 flights, I climbed higher than the Empire State building. :) I also got a day of hiking in this weekend. Overall, it was great!

  14. 20

Loving outdoor workouts right now!! This weekend I did a Color Run 5k (the most fun) and some swimming for an upcoming Ramblin Rose Tri. :)

  15. 21

I love outdoor workouts! Stadiums are my favorite :) I am super impressed with your hand stand! I have never been able to do one.

  16. 22

Looks like a great weekend full of awesome workouts. We were up at the cottage for the weekend so I did a few runs through the forest (there are lots of trails). We also did some kayaking and wakeboarding which is always fun!

  17. 23

Your posts always make me want to visit/run in D.C! So beautiful there!

  18. 24

Looks like so much fun! I got around to swimming on Sunday which is not always easy to do! I love a good swim workout, seriously may be my favorite thing to do! :) And wow… running around DC must be so nice! It must be easy to get motivated when those are your views.

    Sara :)
