Black Friday Hike & Running with an Old Friend

Minus having to spend the better part of yesterday working on my masters paper and presentation (I go to UNC this week to present it!), we’ve had a nice Thanksgiving break!

On Friday, we went for a little Black Friday hike. I’d rather fight the crowds on the trails than in the stores, that’s for sure. Although we actually had the trail almost to ourselves!

We hiked the “Difficult Run Trail” on the Virginia side of Great Falls Park. The weather was great on Friday – nice way to spend a day!

We brought Thanksgiving leftovers for lunch, of course. Turkey, shredded carrots, and baby spinach on a sweet potato roll for me. Plus mustard. I wanted to put cranberry sauce on it, but we were all out!

Plus some leftover salad with almonds, dried cranberries, and goat cheese.

I love Great Falls – gorgeous views of the water.

Another highlight this week was running and yoga-ing with my good friend Ashley!

Ashley moved to Richmond for grad school and I miss her so much! Those of you who are longtime blog readers will recognize her; we first became good friends back in 2009 when we were training for races together. We trained for and ran the Army 10 Miler, Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, my very first half marathon, and a few shorter races together as well. It’s hard not to become really good friends when you’re logging that sort of mileage! We’re big run-talkers as well so it’s the perfect way to catch up.

Ashley was in town for the holiday; we met up on Wednesday morning and covered 5 miles on the C&O Canal Trail, our old favorite haunt, chatting away the whole time. It was great to catch up!

I’m obsessed with this adorable boat ferry. We’d never seen it in action before!

5 miles – done! Picture is of Ashley’s watch because mine got left in the car. 🙂

Ashley and I also hit up a yoga class yesterday morning. I’m loving these “Minimus Zero Life” shoes that New Balance sent me a couple months ago – perfect for traveling to yoga when it’s too cold for flip flops, but you don’t want to wear real shoes because then that requires awkwardly blocking everyone at the cubbies while you try to take off your shoes and socks (and then put them back on at the end). Velcro is my friend at crowded yoga studios, that’s for sure. 😉 I’ve been rocking them for Saturday farmer’s markets and errands and such a lot, too!

What have you guys been up to over the Thanksgiving holidays?

And stay tuned – delicious new recipe post coming at you tomorrow!

Gorgeous pictures! Thanksgiving involved lots of family time, which was great, plus a few workouts--perfect mix. :)

Well done on the hike, run, and yoga. Looks like you made the most of the long weekend. And the trail sure beats stores on Black Friday!

Love the shoes. What have we been doing Thanksgiving holidays. Cooking, eating, walking, Christmas decorating, taking care of a husband with the flu. I begged him to get the flu shot."Oh, I never get the flu" Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Love going for a hike this time of year, especially after a food filled mainly indoor day! :) Good luck with the paper....almost there!

This is definitely my idea of a Black Friday event too. I have never been, nor have any desire to ever go out on Black Friday. You had the right idea!

I completed a 12 mile run on the treadmill, decorated for Christmas, and now am back at college to complete the semester.

Beautiful hike! Wish I had spent my Black Friday outside, too, but I had other obligations. I do have plans to explore a new trail tomorrow though. I can't wait!
