Hello from D.C.!

This morning, I went to visit an old friend — the C&O Canal trail 🙂

027

Closely rivaled by the Mt. Vernon Trail along the Potomac, the C&O Canal is my favorite trail in DC. Can you believe the last time I was out here was August?!

003

The C&O Canal is awesome because it goes FOREVER. South to Georgetown, and north all the way into Maryland and Great Falls Park (LOVE)!

019

I also have a special place in my heart for this trail because I’ve laid out a TON of miles on it. My friend Ashley (who I’m seeing for dinner tonight!) and I did the majority of our long training runs here when training for the Army Ten Miler last fall, Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in the spring, AND our half marathon (of death) in June! Whew!

007

I’ve run out here:

  • when it was freezing (literally — kids were playing hockey on the canal!)
  • when it was just for fun
  • when it was snowy
  • when I didn’t feel so great
  • when I did feel great
  • when it was really muddy
  • when I was all by myself
  • when I was with a friend (more often than not!)
  • when someone stole my water bottle

And many, many more times 🙂 Great running memories out here.

018

My legs were feeling a bit sore and stiff today (I did an awesome 6 mile trail run on Monday and a KILLER power yoga class on Tuesday night in Chapel Hill), so for today’s adventure, I decided to run when I felt like it, walk when I felt like it, and stop to take pictures, too 🙂

010

I ended up covering about 5 miles in an hour. Sounds good to me! It was gorgeous out, with signs of fall’s arrival everywhere:

I spent the rest of the morning working on biostats homework (sadly even though it’s break, I have a ton of work to do), and now I’m gearing up to head out and run some errands. But first — my delicious lunch 🙂

Two eggs scrambled with tomato and a little peppery deli turkey, atop toast:

And a wonderful arugula and spinach salad topped with sugar snap peas, beets, green peppers, feta, and balsamic vinaigrette:

033

Yum 🙂

Have a good one!

DC is one of my favorite places to visit. I have family up there and I visit at least 2 times a year. I can't wait to move there after I graduate undergrad in 1.5 years. :) I'm actually going to be in DC during my winter break and I've been looking for a place to do my long run on Saturdays and this looks like a great place to do it! Thanks for a great post! :)

I LOVE getting back to my favorite running places. When I was back at Notre Dame a few weeks ago I got to do a nine mile training run around the lakes...being somewhere beautiful makes all the difference in the world!

The trail always looks so empty of people. Is it? Love the photo of the leaves falling.

No - it's not empty - it's usually just slow on days when I take pictures because I'm there at random times when everyone else is at work. I usually see a few people here and there still, though. But when I run there on weekend mornings, there are a ton more people!

It's so weird how places you used to run bring back so much nostalgia! I would love to go back to my old trail in France where I studied abroad. Did you have a special place in Czech Republic??

Yes :) I always think of it, especially in the fall, because that's when I ran the most there. I used to run along the river, back and forth over all the bridges. Most spectacular views ever! I miss it. Thanks for jogging my memory :)

Oh my gosh that's beautiful. I'm sitting here in my bathrobe, telling myself I'm about to go for a walk, but reading blogs instead. However, I think your pictures have inspired me to FINALLY get my butt out the door on this beautiful day.
