Chocolate Cherry Espresso Smoothie

Now that the weather is getting really hot in DC, I’ve found myself craving smoothies again. But here’s the problem – I’ve just come back from an early a.m. run., and I want caffeine, but I also need to refuel. What to do? Introducing my new favorite: Chocolate Cherry Espresso Smoothie.

I dreamed up this creation last week and have been enjoying it ever since. The star is this unsweetened chocolate almondmilk from Almond Breeze!

And, of course, the espresso. :) We got this Nespresso Pixie espresso machine for our wedding last fall and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

A few seconds in the blender later, and voila! Caffeine and recovery nutrients, all in one smoothie. I’ve heard that cherries help decrease inflammation – perfect for after a run! You can also add protein powder to this smoothie for extra staying power, or pair it with a piece of toast with some almond butter. I <3 almonds in all forms. :)

Looking for a way to combine your breakfast and your morning cup of coffee? Look no farther. Wake up and fuel up, all in one cup!

  • 1 very ripe banana
  • 1 shot espresso
  • 1/2 C frozen (or fresh & pitted) cherries
  • 1 C unsweetened chocolate Almond Breeze almondmilk
  • Ice

  1. Throw all ingredients into a blender, blend, and enjoy!

Oh and yes, I totally put sliced banana on the cup rim to make it look cuter. :) I’m pretty sure food that looks pretty tastes better. Am I right?

I definitely need to try smoothies again. My best friend loves them but I just can’t seem to get into the idea of it. Maybe it’s the usual green ones. This one looks actually appetizing!

  2. 2

I recently tried chocolate almond milk for the first time – it was amazing. I have never been one to chug milk (or “milk”, in this case) but I finished the whole 8 ounces in less than 5 minutes. I will definitely have to try this. :-)

I am all about smoothies during the summer time. They are so light and refreshing, especially after a run! I have started adding a scoop of almond butter to give mine a litte protein kick. This one looks delicious!

  5. 6

    In one word….gorgeous!!!

  6. 7

I love chocolate and cherry together but have never made it in a smoothie- such a delicious idea!

  7. 8

Sounds yummy! I don’t have an espresso machine, but a spoonful of instant coffee in chocolate drinks tastes great.

  8. 9

YUM! I love the chocolate cherry combo so this sounds amazing!!

  9. 10

I wish I had an expresso machine… this sounds amazing!

  10. 11

This sounds so delicious – tastier than a Starbucks drink! I love smoothies when the weather gets hot too. They’re perfect from breakfast on the go… not that I’m ever running late or anything… :)

  11. 12

good idea adding espresso to your smoothie! .. That chocolate cherry combo sounds delicious

My favorite smoothie is made with skim milk, chocolate Gen UCAN protein powder, frozen mixed berries (Triple Berry Blend from Schwan’s), half a frozen banana, a small scoop of peanut butter, and a handful of spinach!! I’ve been known to bring one to work for my afternoon “snack” on hard workout days!!

  13. 14

You read my mind! I’ve been making smoothies all week for breakfast, but then having to carry both my smoothie and my coffee to work. Now I know how to combine them! Thank you!!

  14. 15

Mmm- looks delicious! I’ve been overdoing it on my regular “banana, peaches, spinach, yogurt, peanut butter, honey and cinnamon” smoothie. I need the push to switch it up- thanks :)

  15. 16

Yum I love cherries! I’d never think of putting them in a smoothie, this is a great idea :)

  16. 17

I love this idea! One of my favorite combinations is cherries and chocolate, and throwing caffeine into the mix doesn’t hurt. Thanks for the recipe!

my question is… where do you get unsweetened chocolate almond breeze…. I’m pretty sure I would buy a WHOLE CASE!

Looks awesome! I’ve stopped using almond breeze brand almond milk bc of the carrageenan and have switched to Silk. What are your thoughts? Not an issue? Just curious:)

Ehhh I’m kind of over the “everything is going to kill us” thing… something new every day! If I were eating carageenan straight I might be worried but I’m sure it’s probably in such small quantities it won’t matter. The jury is still out on carageenan anyway – Tina from Carrots n Cake actually just posted something about it directly from Silk (because some if their products contain it too and people were asking). Anyway, to each their own but in small quantities I’m not concerned :)

Mmm this is my kind of smoothie! I have a smoothie pretty much every morning and then a coffee when I get to work… but I love the idea of combining them!

  20. 24

Hmmmm…. looks sooo good. I like fruit smoothies combined with banana. There’s something about banana that makes smoothies creamy and sweet. :)

  21. 25

That first photo is so cute! How’d you get the little sparkles?

  22. 27

I’m a huge smoothie fan! This sounds like a great one to add into my rotation. I love the combo of chocolate and cherry!

    Hi Anne,
Do you post the calories anywhere for recipes? I am interested in tracking my calories. Thanks

this looks great! I am going to try it.
Have you made this with regular coffee ( i have some leftover iced) rather than espresso? If only because I don’t have an espresso-maker at home….
