How do you fit in exercise on Thanksgiving?

Hello friends!

I’m officially on Thanksgiving break! I got a TON of schoolwork done yesterday so with the exception of a project that I’m going to (hopefully) wrap up while on the plane today, I should be able to fully enjoy my break. Yay!

I don’t fly off to Pittsburgh until later this afternoon, so I started my break with a relaxing morning. I slept in (well, til 8… that’s sleeping in for me nowadays… sad?), ate breakfast, got back in bed and read for a little while. I LOVE doing that… it feels so indulgent! I’m finally reading The Paris Wife per all of your suggestions and LOVING it so far. After reading for a bit, I headed off to a 9:15 a.m. yoga class at Franklin Street Yoga!

It was an amazing class — I’ve been going pretty religiously to the Wednesday night power yoga class, which I love, but it was fun to mix it up this morning with a different instructor and different sort of flow.

The class was still challenging (I was sweating and definitely got a good workout) and included advanced poses, but we held everything longer, so I enjoyed working on my form and getting deeper into the poses, which is something I haven’t done in ages.

Since I was at the studio for once when there wasn’t a class immediately following the one I took, I was able to take some photos afterwards! Yay! I’ve been wanting to share some pictures of this place with you guys since I talk about it all the time. :)

Isn’t it nice? I love how bright and airy it is since half of the walls are actually windows (but with paper over them so you can’t see in or out and you don’t have intense light on you during the day).

I also really love this pillar in the middle of the room with inspirational quotes written all over it. I want to add one of my own someday!

This very simple one — “BE HERE.” — is my favorite.

Such a nice reminder to just calm your mind and really BE where you are, right then. I used to struggle a lot with that when I first started yoga, but now I’m able to really get into the class and enjoy myself. I mean, thinking about everything I have to do later isn’t going to get anything done and it will just stress me out — so I might as well just focus and be in the moment, right?

I love this big lotus flower painted on one of the other walls, too.

Even their lobby is cute. :)

I always try to be sure to fit in exercise over the week of Thanksgiving, and especially Thanksgiving day — it keeps me feeling happy and healthy even after indulging in lots of delicious food.

If you’re in the Chapel Hill area this Thanksgiving, Franklin Street Yoga is offering two totally free “Thanksgiving Gratitude” classes tomorrow (Thanksgiving day) — one at 9 a.m. and one at 10:30 a.m. Both classes are 1 hour 15 minutes and all are welcome. There’s also a 2 p.m. “Post-Thanksgiving Trifecta Jam” class going on on Friday — it’s 1 hour 30 minutes and will include yoga, pilates, AND zumba with 3 different instructors (normal class pricing applies). How fun is that? I wish I were going to be here!

I also love doing Turkey Trots on Thanksgiving morning — when in DC for the holiday, I’ve done the Alexandria VA 5 mile Turkey Trot a number of years and always loved it — I would really recommend it if you’re in the DC area! It starts at 10 a.m. and the course is flat and fast (or has been in the past), which is great for PR-ing and/or feeling like a rock star.

The year that I spent in Tampa, FL for Thanksgiving (2009), I also did a turkey trot — it was a 10k in St. Petersburg and one of my favorite races to date — super flat and great weather, too. I did the race with my brother and miss Meganerd who was living nearby at the time as well — my mom came too as our cheerleader. :)

When I spend Thanksgiving in Pittsburgh I just do my own Turkey Trot with Matt around his family’s neighborhood! Getting downtown to any of the official Pittsburgh races would be a bit of a hot mess, so we create our own instead. :) Whatever works, right?!

Speaking of Pittsburgh — time to shower, pack, have a quick lunch, and head out the door for the airport! Happy early Thanksgiving and enjoy your breaks! I’ll be back with a recap of our feast, most likely on Friday. :)

How do you fit in exercise on Thanksgiving day? Any fellow Turkey Trotters out there?

  1. 1

I’m going to do a workout DVD before we head out for the big meal! Enjoy your time in my hometown! :)

  2. 2

I am ALL OVER that Alexandria turkey trot tomorrow. Never done a 5 mile race so I’m pumped for the automatic PR. Enjoy Pittsburgh!

  3. 4

In the past I’ve dragged my family out to turkey trots, but there aren’t any in Napa. How rude.

I am in the process of trying to drag my mom out for a run right now.

  4. 6

Haha, I will actually be doing the official Pittsburgh Turkey Trot, and I could guarantee that it is going to be a huge hot mess. It’s my first Turkey Trot so I am pretty excited about it, plus I’m dressing up like the big dork that I am so that should be fun. Have safe travels, a great Thanksgiving, and enjoy Pittsburgh!

  5. 8

I run the Turkey Trot every year in St. Pete! This is my 8th year in a row doing it! Im so excited again to run tomorrow!

  6. 10

I am convinced you live in an airport ;)

  7. 12

    I am doing a 10K Turkey Trot!

  8. 14

That yoga studio looks awesome! I love that pillar of quotes. Such a cool idea. I usually run a Turkey Trot with some friends. It’s such a fun way to get in exercise on a busy day. Plus, then I feel a little bit better about going back for seconds of pumpkin pie ;)

  9. 16

Thanksgiving day I will probably do a yoga video, or a 100 workout! Keep it simple on the holiday! Safe travels, and Happy Thanksgiving!

  10. 18

I’ll be doing the 8 mile turkey trot!

  11. 20

My gym is open from 7-12…I’m going to try to get there at 7 so I have time to come back home and finish cooking!

  12. 22

I’ve never seen a yoga studio with guides for where to place your mat to fit everyone in. Do people actually follow it? It seems like a great idea so you don’t end up having to shift everyone later to fit more people in.

    • 23

Yes, they do actually! It’s good because a lot of the popular evening classes get PACKED – every spot is filled so like you said, it’s nice to not have to rearrange.

  13. 24

How do I exercise on Thanksgiving. I don’t.

  14. 26

I’m doing a 5K Turkey Trot with my dad! I’m really looking forward to spending the time with him and setting a good tone for the holiday!

  15. 28

I will do an exercise DVD and take my 4 mile power walk with my husband. Last year I went to an awesome Jazzercise class but with sunshine in our forecast I think the outdoor walk time will be more important to my mental health to face the day in the kitchen and with family.

I love my yoga studio – big, big south facing windows in the historic school building where I had Jr. High Home Ec. Love the space but the classes leave a lot to be desired. Wish I had that Friday yoga class to look forward to.

  16. 30

I have a running injury at the moment, so no turkey trotting this year for me! I will, however, be going for a 4 mile walk tomorrow morning before the big meal and I plan on working up a serious sweat with some Black Friday shopping on Friday…haha!

    Anna Marie says:

I love that you and Matt do your own Turkey Trot! I may ask my sister to do that with me before heading off to celebrate Thanksgiving with the family! I will be traveling a lot over break so I am taking my laptop and work out DVDs..lately I am in love with the Firm work out DVD series.

  18. 34

I am going to do my own Turkey Trot around my neighborhood too – I can’t even imagine going anywhere NEAR downtown tomorrow. I am sure it will be sheer chaos! But probably still fun. :-) Enjoy your time here!

  19. 35

Anne: happy thanksgiving and enjoy this weekend with all of your family and God bless you!! byeee.

  20. 36

Last year I signed up for a Turkey Trot, but when Thanksgiving came, it was bitterly cold and snowy, so we wound up skipping it. Instead, we had our buffet lunch, then went for a long walk by the river–it had warmed up a bit by then (to maybe 20 degrees!) and the snow was easier to face with a full tank, so to speak. ;)

Plan to do the same thing tomorrow and I’m really looking forward to it. Have a great Thanksgiving, Anne!

  21. 37

I love to do yoga on Thanksgiving, then go home and cook all day! I might be volunteering for a Turkey Trot this year instead of running it since my coach doesn’t want me doing anything triathlon related since my Ironman on Sunday. I’m aching to run already though!

  22. 38

    Happy Thanksgiving!

My parents and I are doing a 5 mile Turkey Trot in a town not too far from their house. It’s going to be cold, but sunny!

  23. 39

I was going to join my siblings in their Cold Turkey Run…but then I found out that my favorite spin teacher is holding a thanksgiving ride, so I’m going to stay inside and get a killer workout before the big meal!

  24. 40

The turkey trot is my favorite way to start off thanksgiving!

  25. 41

Fitting in exercise is so important! because working up an appetite is the best part ;) oh and sleeping in til 8 is too. I consider sleeping in until 6 a treat as I get up for 2:30am for work some days! crawling back in bed IS one of the best feelings isn’t it? I don’t have a turkey trot planned this thanksgiving, but I do have a run planned. My training for the Hyannis Half marathon is in full swing! hope you have a great turkey day! :)

  26. 42

    OMG I’m full

    adventurer says:

so how far did you run in pittsburgh?

  28. 45

thanks for the inspiration. i’m thankful for your blog! how is matt? :-)

  29. 46

so proud of you as always…keep it up tiger!

  30. 47

Thanks for the tip about Franklin Street Yoga. I’m from Durham and was going home for Thanksgiving, so I actually drove straight to Chapel Hill from where I live in VA on Thursday morning and met my sister there for one of the free classes. It was a great way to start off the long (and food-filled) weekend!
