Must Go Meal + Our First Real CrossFit Class!

Morning!

Matt and I are getting ready to head to the Outer Banks tomorrow morning for a fun beach trip with his family! I get 3 personal days to use this summer during my hospital internship and I’m taking all three of them next week. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday = NO WORK!! Woooo! Matt and his family will be down there all week; I’m bummed I have to come back early but grateful I get to go at all. 🙂

Since we’re getting ready to leave, we’ve been working our way through the fridge this week. On Wednesday night, we enjoyed a “must go” meal — aka “everything must go!” We had defrosted vegan lasagna (the last of my Thrive Foods Direct samples), sliced avocado (so simple and delicious), sautéed rainbow chard with zucchini/squash, and a little spinach salad with cucumbers and carrots.

Now that is a seriously veggie-filled dinner. Matt made it all for us — I was impressed with his ability to basically clean out the entire fridge for us in one meal! Lol.

IMG_5901

It was a great dinner — very filling and satisfying. Matt had been to an all-you-can-eat meat Brazilian steakhouse the night before so apparently he was in the mood for some veggies. 🙂

Before our veggie-licious dinner on Wednesday, Matt and I attended our very first real CrossFit class at CrossFit Dupont! As you guys know, we just finished the Foundations (intro) course last week, so now we get to go to the real classes with the big kids. Woohoo!

IMG_2410

As you can see on the board, we started the hour with rope climbs — I didn’t get any pictures, but it was fun. I need to wear pants next time, though — I was getting some serious inner leg rope burn action.

Next up was tire flips! You squat down low:

IMG_2394

And then lift the tire (using your legs, not your back).

IMG_2395

Ta da!

IMG_2402

I was on the small tire (which was still really heavy), but Matt was hardcore and flipping the huge scary tire. It was 300 pounds!

IMG_2397

I love how I’m in the background of both of these pictures like — really, tire? You again?

IMG_2396

Next up was the second WOD, which was like something you’d do in a boot camp, so I was a fan. 🙂

We did 4 rounds of the following:

  • 12 ball slams (squat down, stand up and hold up ball over your head, then slam it down into the ground. My ball was 20lb, Matt’s was 40)

IMG_2406

  • 8 ground to shoulder (squat down, lift ball to shoulder, drop it, repeat)

IMG_2407

  • 3 suicides (shuttle runs — two holding the ball on a shoulder, one without the ball and sprinting)

IMG_2403IMG_2408

Whew — done!

IMG_2409

That was fun. 🙂 And HARD! We were sweating up a storm.

We hit up CrossFit again last night — our SWOD was more power lifting-related (for those who know CrossFit, we practiced Cleans). I don’t really like the classes where we practice power lifting moves as much as the fast paced boot camp stuff, but maybe it’s just because I’m not very good at it. 🙂 Stupid inflexible shoulders and back make everything harder! Anyway, we’ll stick with it and maybe I’ll like it more as I improve. Any thoughts from you CrossFit experts? Did you find the power lifting stuff boring at first, too? Is it more fun when you get better? I’m definitely loving the fast paced boot camp style workouts we do at the end, though!

TGIF — have a great day, friends! Catch you guys later this weekend from the BEACH! 🙂

Congrats on the first class -- be prepared to get addicted :) I go to Crossfit in Alexandria and loooove it. Have fun in OBX, I'm going there for 4th of July weekend (and have never been) so I'll look forward to your reports!

I did find power listing very boring at first especially things like cleans and deadlifts. II am getting better at them now, and I like most of them, especially the ones that burn your legs and/or arms like weighted squats, push press/jerk, thrusters, etc. it will grow on you when they start to integrate them into longer WODs and they get mixed in with the boot camp style stuff. Great job!

I can't afford CrossFit yet...Okay since my hubby is still in training for the Army, he'd kill me if I spend $$ on Crossfit right now. BUT since I'm a trainer and specialize in athletic strength and conditioning I know all of the powerlifting and olympic lifts. I found it scary at first, but I never found them boring. I feel like a beast in the gym, because no one else does these lifts except for deadlifts. It takes a lot of practice, but you'll master the lifts in no time!

You will love CrossFit more and more the more you get into it! The powerlifts were a bit foreign to me at first too but the more you do them the easier and funner they will get! What's really cool to see is when you start progressing in weight on your lifts! It happens pretty cool and you will be so proud when you do! Good luck :)

Yeah at first I was as much of a fan of the lifting days because I wasnt really sweating as much so I didnt feel like I got as good as a workout. BUT, soon you'll start to see how much stronger you get and you'll be looking forward to your next PR on a weight. I LOVE the heavy lifting now :)

Hey Anne! You did great last night, despite the tight shoulders. You whipped through the DWOD, especially the plate hurdles, I was jealous!! The weightlifting part seems so intimidating and technical but I'm sure we'll all get it at some point. I seriously will never get used to the huge guys slamming their giant barbells on the ground, sounds like WWIII. Enjoy your weekend and see you around at Crossfit Dupont!

That looks awesome but yet also scared the heck out ofvme! I'm not good at the Boot Camp style workouts, but maybe that's because I don't do them enough? i feel like that may be MORE of a reason to try CrossFit.

When I first started at CrossFit Lorton, I used to get excited when there was running in the WOD because it was the only thing I really knew how to do. Once I started getting stronger, I became addicted to strength training. I never thought I'd say this, but I'd so much rather do just the strength than the WOD! It's really empowering to throw around heavy weights and to hit those PRs.

I just started with Crossfit last Saturday, and wow is it intense! My first 'offical' WOD was called 'Medicine Ball Monday' and my quads are still on fire 4 days later. I feel very uncoordinated with the heavy bars and some of the cleans and jerk movements, but I'm hoping it will feel more natural after a few weeks/months maybe?!

My favorite move is the power clean. I didn't find it boring, liked the focus on form and not speed, and liked the challenge of strength. I dread shuttle runs. Love the pics of your tire flipping!

Definitely don't like the power lifting stuff as much as the met con workouts (I hate cleans! I suck at them!) but those are the areas I need to work on the most. My coach actually wants me to stop doing met cons until I am stronger...and I'm hesitating but I know it's best!

Oops and sorry but Cleans are Olympic lifts, not power lifts - power lifts are deadlifts, squats and bench press, while Oly is clean&jerk and the snatch. I also LOVE Oly lifting

I'm doing a partnership with CrossFit Dupont - I met one of the managers at my Lululemon Georgetown running group. So I'm going for free for two months in exchange for writing about my experience! I outlined it all in my original post about the partnership :)

I love tire flips and rope climbs. I always feel so badass when I make it to the top of the rope! Coming down is a little scary. I love love Olympic lifts, I don't know why. I think it's because I feel so powerful, and it's fun to see measurable increases in my strength via one rep max. This morning we practiced squat cleans, then did squat clean thrusters as part of our WOD.
