The Awesome Workout that Almost Wasn’t

Why is a running club so awesome? Because when it’s a billion degrees outside and you’re feeling worn out after a long day at your (unpaid) internship and an annoying commute and want to bail… you go anyway, because you know people would miss you if you didn’t.

And then, guess what happens? You have a great run. And of course, as always, you leave way happier than you arrived, and you’re so glad you went. 🙂

Please note my sweaty arm — we were all SOAKED!

We had a big group last night for the Lululemon Georgetown run club (every Tuesday night @ 6:30); Chris from Crossfit Dupont started us off with some dynamic stretching and then I led the front group for 4 hot miles on the C&O canal — getting speedier as we went and chatting most of the way, too. As always, there were a few different pace groups that naturally formed, so don’t be scared by these splits if you’ve been wanting to come out for the run — not everyone was going this pace. 🙂

Splits:

  • Mile 1: 8:34
  • Mile 2: 8:31
  • Mile 3: 8:35
  • Mile 4: 8:10

Total distance: 4 miles. Total time: 33:51. Average pace: 8:27. Sweet!

After the run, we all took a few minutes to cool down in the glorious a/c in the store while chugging water, and then headed upstairs for a mini-yoga session!

Johanna of The Running Yogis joined us on the run and then led us in the 15 minute stretch yoga session afterwards. It was glorious — doing a short yoga session after running is the best thing ever — especially downward dog pose. And it’s even better that our instructor ran with us so she’d know what felt good and what didn’t after 4 miles!

So glad I went. 🙂

What workout have you almost blown off lately that ended up being awesome?

I've been feeling a little bit tired this week and have been tempted the last couple of evenings to miss my workout but I've felt so amazing after having pushed myself to go. I really need to do more yoga!

I love that you are part of a running club! Great job with the run and the yoga afterwards. I think stretching is key to preventing injury :)

Haha, I was right in front of you during the yoga session so I'm in all of your pictures (in the pink top and black shorts). :) It was a lot of fun; I was definitely slower than you and the others at the front! I never run in the evening because it is so hot, so that was a major adjustment for me, but I still enjoyed myself and it was fun to try something new and meet new people.

I was going to do a treadmill walk yesterday, that was the plan but ended up on the elliptical for 30 minutes. Did way better than I had planned it out. Yay! Have a great day today. ^_^

Well done! Inspirational, once again. And, yes, I almost blew off the 5:30 am stationary bike workout the other day, but then climbed on and got after it, after all!

So inspiring! I'm looking at a few running clubs in SF, trying to decide which one to join. Any thoughts on running clubs that charge a fee, but you train as a group towards a race (like a half marathon)?

I think the training groups that charge a fee can be great and well worth it if they are run by good coaches! A good one would include set, structured workouts, including track/speed workouts, long runs, etc. The free running groups are mostly just once per week and more casual/fun - a training group you have to pay for should be more structured and more frequent so it's worth the $! A training group like that would be awesome if you were training for a race and didn't have a training buddy.

Aw thanks! The hardest thing is honestly finding time to blog/catch up on emails - the workouts have been my stress relief but then the last thing I want to do after a long day is get on my computer and work more! It's really helped to have workout buddies/set dates for my exercise, though, so I can't really blow it off!

Love the idea of coordinating an after run stretch...great for both the instructor to get the word out and for the runners.

Whenever I almost blow off Zumba, I'm so happy I don't because it makes me feel great and it's fun! Have you ever tried Zumba?

I went to the noon yoga today at the Gtown Lulu, and it was the best yoga class I've taken in DC so far :) So glad I went.
