So far we’ve been having an awesome time here in Austin! Lots of good food and friendly people! We loved having all your recommendations to help make food decisions! 🙂

Immediately after checking in to our hotel, we hit up a place down the street for lunch called Guero’s Taco Bar. Clearly margaritas were in order. We are on vacation, after all! 😉

003

Mmmmm. Nothing like a margarita at 2 in the afternoon with two of your very best friends 🙂

For lunch, I ordered a chicken fajita taco (whole wheat tortilla! woo!), which came with rice, beans, cheese and guac (my fave)! It was majorly delicious. I destroyed the taco but only made it through about 1/3 of the rice and beans.

005

I also got a side salad — it was really refreshing, crunchy, and cold — it’s SO HOT here in Texas!

004

After our siesta, Turner, Kris, and I headed out for some strolling towards the river and downtown area, stopping at shops along the way. It was craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy hot and we were dying within a few minutes, lol. Kind of wanted to jump in the river 😉

006

I was seriously too hot to take pictures. I’m sorry. BUT… we found a frozen yogurt place!!!

039

Yessssssss.

009

It was one of those awesome serve yourself places! This clearly meant I got way too much and couldn’t finish it all, heh 😉 They had some really fun flavors — I got some of the coffee, original tart, and Taro-bly delicious! Yummy 🙂

008

After showers and basking in the air conditioning in our hotel room, we headed out for dinner!

Via Twitter (follow me!), Heather told me that we absolutely HAD to go to Saltlick, about 20 minutes outside the city, for the best BBQ ever. How can you argue with that!?

So off we went!

023

Um, can we say coolest place EVER?! 011

We were expecting a hole in the wall, so you can imagine our surprise when we arrived to find a massive restaurant in the middle of nowhere with cops directing cars into parking spots and all sorts of picnic tables, white Christmas lights, and people hanging out!

012

Hooray! 🙂 The weather was beautiful by this point and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to hang!

014

Plus, look who we found?!

016

Heh.

019

Matt is randomly here! He had to go to San Antonio for a couple weeks for work, so he drove over to meet us for dinner (and chauffeur us to Saltlick!).

The food was great and definitely lived up to the hype as well. Check out this intensity:

018

OMG YUM!!!! Soooo good. Totally didn’t even make it halfway through this, lol. I love me some BBQ.

Look at their awesome meat smoker!

020

What a great night. After dinner, we went back outside to the picnic tables and hung out with some Texas beer (the restaurant is BYO). Awesome end to an awesome day 🙂

Turner, Kris, and I are getting ready to head out for Austin adventures, day 2! Check back later to see what we get into 😉

Oh, yum! Now that you've shown the BBQ pit, I think I remember that place being on Food Network or the Travel channel. Clearly it was a good call.

Wooza, that all looks delicious. I haven't had frozen yogurt in ages (I don't even know where to get it in Baltimore!). And the Saltlick, looks fantastic - got me cravin' BBQ!

this is random and eerie but I'll share. reading your blog this morning I saw the picture of you and Matt and was like wow, I know him. We went to Spain together when we were 14. anyway, I haven't talked to him since then, but I love it when I'm reminded that the world is actually very very small. so, um, thanks for that. enjoy austin. it is the best. also, I'm from durham and you will love chapel hill. make sure you check out cosmic cantina, everything in carrboro (especially weaver st market), the planetarium, lucy's 80s night, the quarry in durham (on sparger st), allen and son's bbq, maple view farms. I'll see what else I can think of.

Haha, the Saltlick IS awesome. My brother used to live in Austin (no idea if you knew that) so I've been, and I want to go back!! But he moved away! Boo. :) (Actually one of my college friends just moved to Austin. Maybe I can convince him he wants to host us for a few days, haha.)
