The One Item That’s Always in Our Fridge

Thank you to my friends at KeVita for sponsoring this post and the awesome giveaway at the end of it!

There are 4 food items whose absence in our household induce panic: bananas, eggs, avocados, and kombucha/sparkling probiotic drinks.

Matt and I are completely obsessed with probiotic drinks and have been for the past couple years now. We first tried kombucha way back when we were living in North Carolina (when I was in grad school) and I remember it vividly because we both thought it was kind of weird. But man does it grow on you – now we absolutely love that vinegary taste and fizz!

We drink kombucha/a sparkling probiotic drink pretty much every single day – usually before dinner either as a happy hour or while cooking together. I love having a fun fizzy drink before dinner that won’t leave me dehydrated and mildly headache-y the next morning – total win. 🙂

Funny story: I had more kombucha (or “buch” as we like to call it) and sparkling probiotic drinks in the fridge than usual when I left last Friday for a trip since I wanted to have a variety on hand to photograph for this post. When I came back on Sunday night, Matt and I decided to go out for a walk before dinner because it was nice out. I went to the fridge to grab a buch for the walk and said something about it as I walked by him. He was like: “Wait… ummm… yeah. I drank them all.” Lol! Fail. Clearly we are addicted. 🙂 Good thing the empty bottles were still in our recycling bag – reenactment FTW!

So: why do we love kombucha and sparkling probiotic drinks so much, besides the taste? Because they are full of healthy bacteria called probiotics! Probiotics are living microorganisms that are believed to improve health by maintaining balance in our digestive system. The body is a natural home to these organisms; the digestive system alone boasts a large quantity of many types of bacteria, which help keep the intestines healthy and aid in digesting and absorbing nutrients from food. Probiotics also promote healthy immune function by helping to protect us from pathogens and assisting with detoxification of harmful compounds (like alcohol or drugs).

KeVita offers two main organic probiotic-packed product lines: Master Brew Kombucha and Sparkling Probiotic Drinks. We are a big fan of both of them!

What’s the difference between the two? KeVita’s Sparkling Probiotic Drinks are naturally fermented with a Water Kefir Culture and contain 4 strains of live probiotics (4 billion CFUs) that help support your digestive and immune health. They are certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, non-dairy, vegan, and kosher, and don’t contain any caffeine, so they make a great choice for a healthy happy hour or to enjoy during dinner.

The KeVita Master Brew Kombucha, on the other hand, is fermented with a kombucha tea culture (green and black tea), which yields a high count of beneficial organic acids; these help feed the bacteria in your gut so you can better absorb probiotics. Their kombucha contains 2 strains of live probiotics (4 billion CFUs) and is also enriched with B vitamins. Like the sparkling probiotic drinks, the kombucha is also certified organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, non-dairy, vegan, and kosher, but contains organic caffeine, making it great for a morning pick me up or to enjoy with lunch. (Please note the furry photobomber.)

Also – unlike other brands of kombucha, KeVita’s Master Brew Kombucha does not contain “floaties” (pellicles made of cellulose with no nutritional value) or fermenting yeast in the bottles – they are filtered out. So if those gross you out, KeVita is your brand. 🙂

There's a kombucha brewery in Charlotte and I love going there! Kombucha definitely grows on you and I thought it was kind of funny the first time I tried it :)

I love kombucha! Not only do I enjoy the flavors but I also like that it has many health benefits. My local farmers markets also used to sell fresh kombucha too!

Sounds like my household staples too! I love Kevita but GT will always be my favourite. But you're right, Kevita is one of the few brands that doesn't have funny things floating! Haha.

I've never tried Kombucha but I see it all over the place now - I may have to try it one of these days. That meal looks amazing as well - are the recipes anywhere on your site?

I don't think kombucha has quite caught on in the same way here in Australia. I've never seen it in stores! I might have to pay a visit to the 'alternative health shop' and see if they stock it - would definitely be a nice change for a pre-dinner drink :)

I love seeing the new Kombucha flavors brands are coming out with. I think I would drink Kombucha everyday if I could handle the high price tag. I think the solution is to make my own!
