Things I’m Loving Lately

Hi friends! Thank you for your great comments over on my How to Stay Healthy While Working in an Office post! Keep them coming. 🙂

I have all sorts of randomness to write about today so I figured it would make sense to put it all into a things I’m loving lately post. Enjoy!

Toast with nut butter and Greek yogurt

File this under “sounds weird, tastes awesome.” On days I’m running late or want something even more simple than my microwave banana oatmeal, tart cherry oatmeal, or flour free pancake for breakfast, I’ve been having toast topped with nut butter, sliced banana, and a thick smear of plain full fat Greek yogurt. The yogurt adds some protein and makes it SUPER filling, and it’s a surprisingly good combination, too. Try it! Dirty plate optional, Greek yogurt a must – regular yogurt will be too runny.

Workin’ on my fitness

I was back at the track yesterday for another great workout! Tempo run – check! I really pushed myself keep those splits down and succeeded.

I was especially proud because on Wednesday morning I had my butt kicked at Urban Athletic Club. We did a billion and one squats/lunges and a lot of push ups/planks, too. I was so sore yesterday!

This article: Why Early 80’s Babies are Different Than Other Millennials

I was just talking last weekend with Matt and some friends about how those of us born in the late 70’s and early 80’s don’t really fit into a generation category. We’re a little too young to fit in with the grunge and cynicism of Gen X-ers, but we can’t fully relate with Millennials who grew up with technology and never had to use a card catalogue, dictionary, or write a paper by hand. (Yep, hard to believe now). Anyway, my fellow late 70’s/early 80’s born peeps will love this article. I like the idea of calling us “The Oregon Trail Generation.” 😉

Did they take that picture in my high school room?! Lol! Also, AOL dial up and Blockbuster rentals… meeeemories! In related news, I just started “One Tree Hill” on Netflix because I somehow missed the boat on that when it was actually on. I <3 shows made for teenagers, clearly.

Snack Balls

IMG_8006

There are approximately a thousand and one snack ball recipes on the internet by now, so I’ve been winging it and trying combinations of various ones I’ve seen lately – generally without measuring anything because I don’t like measuring. 🙂

I’ve mostly been making my Tart Cherry Pie Snack Balls or Oatmeal Raisin Energy Bites lately, so I decided to mix it up and use dates this time. I soaked them in hot water first so they’d be nice and soft…

IMG_8002

Then blended them with a little coconut oil. I probably should have used a food processor instead of a blender because it didn’t get smooth, but once I dirtied the blender there was no turning back. 😉

IMG_8003

Then I threw some unsweetened coconut, almond butter, cinnamon, salt, and rolled oats into the mix. Yum!

IMG_8004

Ready to roll (literally).

I’ll end this random post with a reminder that if you want to sign up for ClassPass, do it today, because the $50 off your first month deal expires tonight! Here’s my affiliate link to get the deal. They just added a ton more studios this week – including a lot of CrossFit boxes! Excited to check some of them out.

Matt and I are staying in town this weekend and have a really action-packed schedule. Tonight we’ll be at a rehearsal dinner and tomorrow night at the accompanying wedding. I also have my high school friend Lara’s bridal shower tomorrow – I’m sadly missing her bachelorette as that’s tomorrow night, too. We’re kicking off the shower tomorrow morning by going to CrossFit with her, though, so that will be fun! 🙂 I also need to squeeze in a 9 mile training run at some point… I’m partially considering doing it after work today before the madness of this weekend begins, but we’ll see – Sunday might be a better idea.

Have a good one, my friends! See you Monday. 🙂

What are you loving lately?

My old workout buddy and I have fallen off the wagon since having babies (about 1.5 years ago - eek!). We used to do early mornings 3x a week and just haven't been able to coordinate since the girls' arrivals. BUT we both used your link to buy the ClassPass earlier this week and have been taking full advantage to get back into shape! Maybe starting off with the discounted version will get me back into the habit of early workouts and convince me the full price version is worth it. So, thanks!

A weird food combo? How about this? I put almond butter, Greek yogurt and banana slices on top of a baked sweet potato. It works! And I did ClassPass for a month in San Francisco when it was just getting started and loved it! Hope you have fun at all your activities this weekend. I was a bridesmaid in a wedding last week in Florida and am actually happy I have a lot less to do this upcoming weekend. Even though weddings and travel are fun -- they are draining. I need to rest hehe! :)

I can't wait to try that toast, though with strawberries instead of bananas, since bananas are the bane of my existence. :) And I loved both of those articles about being an early 80s kid. I was just talking the other day about how much I miss Blockbuster rentals - my Friday night routine was to go to Blockbuster with my sister, pick out a new movie (which always took us about half an hour), and then get pizza from the Pizza Hut next door. Both places are gone now, and I always get kind of sad when I drive by! Renting something on demand just does not have the same satisfying feeling.

I love that Oregon Trail Generation article. So true. I am 36 and not quite a Gen Xer but definitely have a very different mentality and expectations than Millenials. A five year tweener period of time. Thanks for sharing!

I'm a late 70s child. Love the Oregon trail generation article! Brings back many memories. Those were the days! What I'm loving lately is glimpses of summer. Ready for kids to be out of school and spend our days at the pool or beach. Love some energy balls. These are a weekly staple in our house.

Hey Anne! I love your blog! I've been reading for years, and I always appreciate your thoughts on different nutrition related topics! Here's my question...Have you heard of Whole 30? It seems to be all the rage these days! I tried it for a couple of weeks and couldn't quite buy into it. I missed dairy, brown rice, and legumes way too much and I was so sick of eating meat all of the time! I'm a fairly healthy eater in general, but I tried the Whole 30 because my friend swore she had so much energy after eating this way. I'd love to hear some thoughts/opinions from a nutritionist's standpoint, not necessarily on the Whole 30 program specifically, but in regards to the paleo diet and low carb living. Do you think that these diets are healthier than a diet that includes lean proteins, vegetables, healthy sources of carbohydrates, and some dairy? Thanks!!!

Hi Katie! Thanks for reading. I have indeed heard of Whole 30. As you can probably guess from having read my blog for awhile, I'm not a fan of any sort of diet that restricts specific foods/types of foods (unless, of course, it's medically necessary). While I appreciate that Whole 30 and Paleo focus on whole, real, quality food, I don't think it's the best idea in terms of long term sustainability to eat in such a limited manner. In my experience, I find that if foods are off limits, it makes people want them a lot more - and then can create a very black/white, good food/bad food mentality that leads to guilt around food, and potentially even binges. Do I think people should eat mostly lean protein, healthy fat, and veggies/fruit vs. tons of refined grains? Of course. But I think it's important to be realistic and eat in a way that is sustainable long term - and that doesn't create a sense of guilt around indulging. It's perfectly healthy to indulge! So -- that's why I recommend a more balanced approach. :)

I don't even want to admit how many times I've probably watched OTH in its entirety over the years (except for the last season for some reason). The first two are definitely the best - Enjoy! :)
