Weekend

Hi guys! I went for my first solo, official postpartum run on Saturday – I busted out my watch and everything! I hardly remembered how to use it it had been so long since I dusted it off. 😉 My other postpartum runs have been spontaneous jog/walks while out with the dog (I had done that a few times and made it up to roughly a mile or so), but I really wanted to give a solo run a shot to see how I felt. I headed to the track because the soft surface felt better than pavement, and I made it 2 miles with a couple walking breaks (untimed). Longest run in a really long time!

As I wrote on Instagram, running postpartum is weird because your body feels both the same and very different. 2 miles definitely felt like the max I wanted to do – I don’t think I’ll be doing much more than that anytime soon, and that’s totally fine. I’m just happy that I can hopefully get out once a week for a jog again now – it’s such nice me time, and the weather is going to start getting really nice for running again soon!

We are starting to see signs of spring here… some flowers are coming up and Saturday in particular was gorgeous! We spent a lot of time outside this weekend – Riese loves it as much as we do! We did a few walks and sat in the park for a bit as well – Riese loves watches the big kids play. 🙂

Matt’s parents were in town this weekend which was fun! His mom had a conference in DC so they both came down so they could see us and Riese. Unfortunately Riese was pretty fussy this weekend (according to my Wonder Weeks app we are in a storm cloud right now – they are so accurate!) and mostly wanted to nurse and snooze when we weren’t out walking (so nice that fresh air is usually a sure bet for cheering her up), but they got some smiles and giggles here and there. 🙂

On Friday night, we stayed in with Matt’s parents and Riese and got takeout – there are so many good rotisserie chicken places here in the DC area! Yum.

I had some of the leftovers for lunch another day, with a bunch of wilted spinach. So delish.

On Saturday night, Matt and his parents (and one of Matt’s good friends from home) all had dinner at our place and I headed out on the town for a mom’s night out! I went to Liberty Tavern in Clarendon with a few old friends – we have known each other since our early 20’s when all of us were just newly dating our now-husbands, who are all friends too. We don’t see each other all that much anymore since everyone has kids, so it was a big treat to catch up with them, and the food was delicious! We shared the brussels (so crispy) and a really good dessert, and I had the fish for my entrée.

One last food highlight pic from the weekend – brunch at our place on Sunday with Matt’s parents before they hit the road. Scrambled eggs + bacon is always a win.

Time to continue to tackle my to do list! Thank you to those who provided advice on Friday’s blog post regarding increasing milk supply – I appreciated the tips! I’m going to try swapping out my regular pumping session right before bed for a power pumping session to see if that helps. I’m also going to start pounding water – I don’t think I’ve been drinking enough. And I’m going to be more conscious of staying on top of snacking a lot, too – meals have been solid, but sometimes I end up getting distracted by work and realize I’m too hungry in between meals, which is not good!

I will leave you with the official 4 month old photo I took of Riese on Saturday! Time flies. <3

Missed your last post asking for supply tips but here are a few things to try: EAT more, it's really good to eat a snack and drink a big glass of water at least every time you are nursing or pumping. High fat and high protein foods helped increase my pumping output! Check your pump parts, they do wear out, I like the duckbills instead of membranes no matter what type of pump you have. Try "hands on pumping" technique (basically breast compression but there is a little more to it than that) and pump for at least 20 minutes or longer each session. You can also use breast compression to help her get more milk when nursing. Milk supply is highest from about 1 am - 6 am so if you happen to be awake during that stretch and she is full and settled, that's a great time to pump the excess. My overall supply always dropped significantly when my babies starting sleeping through the night. In addition to high fat, high protein foods, I would eat oatmeal every single day - make it with whole milk, add flax seeds, chia seeds, etc. anything to up the healthy fats. Brewer's yeast is great but not super tasty in oatmeal imo. Lastly there are supplements like fenugreek that can be a big help. But the number one thing is time on the breast! Good luck.

Hi Anne - as a fellow RD and mom (8 year old, 5 year old, 9 month old), just wanted to say that I love reading your blog! You have a wonderful way of listening to your body after having little Riese, which is sometimes hard when eating healthy and exercise is also in your job description. :) Your little girl is adorable, glad you are having so much fun as a mommy, it's the best!

So this is sooo random and I can’t believe I’m even asking it but not that I noticed, I can’t not wonder! xD That block with the months— it looks like it’s just a 6 sided cube..... why is there an 8 on one side?? Did they skip numbers or something o_O

Haha good observation! The other numbers are on the other block - we have two. :) I have no idea how they decided which ones to put on each, though!

Hi Anne, Riese is soooo cute! And all the foods look delicious. :) Btw, what is the black thing over your rice with chicken? Some kind of beans? Greetings from the Czech republic! ;-) Jitka
