How You Made a Change for the Healthy

A couple months ago, I wrote about the One Small Change I Made to Improve My Health — creating a standing up desk at home, or my “perch”, as Matt calls it.

At home, my perch is the breakfast bar area facing the kitchen.

And I created one at my dietetic internship the other day, too, by putting a box on top of my work table. Not exactly pretty, but it gets the job done 🙂

Since my post, I’ve heard from a bunch of you that I’ve inspired you to create your own perches, too, so I asked that you send me photos of your perches, at home or work.

Here they are! 🙂

Here’s Rachelle’s “fancy ergonomic desk” set up at work — love the creativity with the different size boxes! She says she stands about 4 hours out of the work day now.

Abby found a new favorite “perch” spot at her local coffee shop!

Love that she has my blog open on the laptop! Hehe.

Colleen is rocking her breakfast bar at home, too… reading my blog, of course! 😉

Thanks for sharing your pictures! I love that you guys are making changes for the healthy, too. Keep it up 🙂

Have you guys ever thought about making a standing up desk? Do you think your workplace would allow it? I’ve heard of some really cool desks attached to (very slow) treadmills and even bikes, but I have a feeling most offices wouldn’t be on board for that… but there’s always the options to just place a box (or something nicer looker) on top of your desk, too!

We’re teaching kids how to cook this morning at my dietetic internship! It’s day 1 of a four day class called “Cook Smart, Eat Smart” we’re running with 4-H kids. Should be interesting — I’m bringing my camera for sure! It’ll be fun to interact with kids again — sometimes I miss teaching! It will be nice that these kids actually speak my language 😉

Also, stay tuned for a fun recap of me and Matt’s second brick workout (bike + run) for triathlon training! We did the workout after work last night and it was a success 🙂 So tired this morning, though!

And in the meantime, check out my guest post over on Tina’s blog about how I got into running — and you can, too!

I spend most of the day on my feet anyway because I'm a teacher but now that I'm home and taking an onlne class, Ive been sitting WAY too much! We have a bar-type table with tall stool, so instead of sitting, I've been standing because the table is the perfect height. Thanks for the inspiration!

I LOVE the perch! :) I teach dance and drama and am pretty active in general, so I usually only sit when I'm blogging! :)

Yay! for standing! Lol I am sitting as a currently type this comment, but considering how I taught a walking class and I just walked to subway I deserve to sit for a bit!

Ah, my favorite time at home is when I'm cooking dinner on the island in the middle of our apartment, so I can use the computer while standing and get some chopping done too!! Love the perch.

So cute! I sometimes perch at my kitchen counter but maybe I might need to make a more regular work station after seeing these!

I sit on my yoga ball a lot at work but I put too much air in it the other day and now it hurts my butt if I sit for too long! I'm some of that air will be gone soon!

Whenever I'm doing a lot of things at home all at one time, I put my laptop up on a perch so I don't sit down and get comfortable. It makes me get the work done! I need to create a perch at work. Great idea!

I work in a laboratory so I'm either standing or walking for most of the day... including on my lunch break... so I enjoy the sitting breaks! But I love seeing everyone's ideas for a "perch"! :-)

My co-workers and I were JUST talking about this! I'm a greeting card illustrator, and sit down all day long to draw... and I know it's terrible for me! However, it may also be a challenge to stand up and draw at the same time. LOL ;) But I definitely want to make a "perch" while I'm blog-reading from now on!

My employer is actually very away of the issue with ergonomics and (after a note from my doctor) provided me with a sit/stand desk. It's powered and goes from sitting height to standing with the push of a button. I love it! I'm a technical writer so sitting all day gives me back problems.
