Humid Running & Healthy Snacking

Hi friends! I’m back in DC and getting back into the swing of a busy workweek. I kicked off the week on an endorphin high yesterday by dragging myself out of bed for a 6 a.m. CrossFit class, and this morning I was up and out for a run with my friend Ashley!

It was a really humid and gray morning, but the views were still lovely down on the Mt. Vernon Trail, as always.

We did a nice out and back, chatting away the whole time. I love getting in friend time first thing in the morning. 🙂 Sweaty selfie:

This morning was one of those mornings when I was so sweaty even my shins were sweating. It wasn’t that crazy hot out, but it was just SO humid!

Our final mile was the steep hill of death. I hadn’t run up it in awhile – oof! I was really glad Ashley was with me because I absolutely would have walked the whole thing had I been alone. My legs were NOT feeling it today, so I was proud of myself for pushing through, even though it kind of sucked. 😉

5.27 miles – done! I’m not sure if my legs are worn out in general or if it’s just the humidity, but this felt really hard! Summer running is a whole different ballgame – I always have to remind myself that a slower pace (and that slower pace feeling much harder) is the name of the game when it’s hot out. We’ll all be feeling speedy come fall!

Thanks for keeping me going out there today, Ashley!

On the food front, it’s nice being home and enjoying some healthier eats after last week’s beach trip full of happy hours and desserts. It’s all about balance, and indulgence is fun when it’s worth it, but it’s also nice to get back to more of the foods that make me feel good. 🙂 I’ve been enjoying my standard Perfect Microwave Banana Oatmeal and Flour Free Breakfast Pancake again, and also whipped up another Pear & Pineapple Green Smoothie yesterday afternoon!

Another thing on the snack front I’ve been enjoying lately is the products from Nourish Snacks, who sent me a free sample box of their goodies to try out recently.

Nourish Snacks is a cool new healthy snack line created by fellow dietitian and nutrition expert Joy Bauer. Their tagline is “real food, no bs”, which I love, and their snacks contain no GMOs, no preservatives, no artificial colors or sweeteners, and no trans fat or hydrogenated oil. Packed with protein, fiber, and antioxidants, too, so they’ll actually keep you satisfied longer than processed packaged snack foods will!

So far my favorite of the ones they sent me to try was the “cinn-sational” – cinnamon spiced apples and almonds. Although the colossal crunchy corn was also awesome, and Matt and I both loved the posh ‘stachios, which we ate as a road trip snack last week on the way to the beach. So good – awesome spice blend!

If you’re looking to mix up your snack routine, check out Nourish Snacks – they get two thumbs up from me on both flavor and nutrition/ingredient list quality. Each snack is $10 for a set of 5, and you select as many as you’d like on their website (here is the full list of snack options – love all the variations of roasted chickpeas!). Shipping is free on orders over $25. These are perfect to toss in your purse or keep in your desk at work!

I’ll leave you with a photo of my favorite furball, who is apparently happy we’re home. 🙂

Have a great day, friends!

Humidity can make otherwise nice days feel horrible. I'm thankful I'm not living somewhere where we just have a dry heat. Looks like there's lots of pretty trails in DC.

I looked down on one of my runs this week and saw my legs dripping in sweat as well. We are just so hardcore.

We've been having some random summer humidity out here and it definitely changes the whole feel of the run! Good job for slogging on through :)

Hello there! I am new to the blog-found it over the weekend when I was looking up running and weight loss. I have been running for a few years down here in New Orleans, Louisiana! Talk about HOT & HUMID! I have twenty or so pounds to lose and just started doing weights ( I have been so afraid of weights) I just wanted to say Hello and to say I am so enjoying your blog! Thanks.

Bahaha gotta love the shin sweat. That's when you know it's getting real. I've been feeling sluggish on my runs lately, too, so thanks for the reminder that it'll pay off come fall!

Lately, I'm working very hard on being glad that I don't have to bundle up with layers of clothes and that my pace will (probably) be faster when it cools down!

It has definitely been super humid here. I can't say I'm a fan, but I'll go nonetheless. As long as it stays overcast, I can handle the humidity. Also, I have that same blanket! I am in basically the same position with my feet on it as we speak, but I have a computer on my lap instead of a cat :)

Good job running in the humidity!! It kills me as well... However I found a positive last night when I was running with a group. They were talking about training for marathons in the summer vs winter, and the guy said he rather train during the summer because its so much harder. I am hoping my training in the summer for my next half in the fall is going to lead me to PR! Shooting for under 1:50....So bring it on humidity. :)

That's true - race day in fall will definitely seem easier if you train in summer! Good luck for sub 1:50! :)

I have been getting up at 5am, eeek, so not a morning person, to attempt and run without too much moisture in the air. So far it has been an ok summer up here in Western Massachusetts. Even when it is humid at the hour, there are very few bugs and not too much traffic which is nice. I will miss it when it is dark and I am forced to run after work. Snacks look yummy, are they vegan?
