Pho, Yoga & Sandwiches at the Movies

Hello friends!

I had another fun day yesterday with my college friend Lu! I spent the morning at school, in class and getting some work done, and returned home in time for a late lunch. We decided to go to another one of my local Chapel Hill favorites — Lime & Basil!

Lime & Basil is a Vietnamese restaurant on Franklin Street — I’ve been here a couple times before, once with a blog reader (Hi Aubrey!) and once with Matt — but both times I’ve forgotten my camera! Today was finally the day to capture the deliciousness that is this restaurant’s pho.

I LOVE pho — have you guys ever had it? It’s such a good rainy day comfort food type meal. Basically a huge bowl of rice noodles, broth, and some sort of protein — tofu in Lu’s case, chicken in mine — plus some veggies and topped with bean sprouts and thai basil.

Deeeeelish. Especially when a little of this stuff is added to the mix:

After lunch we came back to my place to get a little work done and then headed back out again for a 4:15 yoga class! I had to introduce Lu to my favorite yoga studio, of course. :)

The class was amazing — very relaxing and a good workout, too. Lu and I both left feeling completely amazing and she was talking about how much the class made her want to start up yoga again! I love having friends visit that are on board for workouts. :)

We decided to go see a movie last night when we got back from yoga, so we quickly packed up some sandwiches to eat in the theater for dinner — I know, so classy.

Yep, come visit me and I will make you almond butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner. ;) Lol. What can I say — it was exactly what both of us wanted and perfect to sneak into the movie!

We saw the movie “Like Crazy” — one I’d been really intrigued by after seeing some ads on TV for it lately. The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has been getting rave reviews. I loved the movie — it was so raw and real and heartbreaking. Very refreshing to see a movie without all the usual Hollywood frills, even though it made both of us cry at least 3 times. :) Any of you seen it? What did you think of the ending?

Lu and I just enjoyed some of my Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal and now I’m headed off to school! Unfortunately I need to get down to some serious studying today — final exams start next week, bah!

Happy Tuesday. :)

Yoga and awesome food! Sounds like a great day with a friend. I haven’t seen “like crazy” but have been wanting to!

  2. 2

I so do not miss finals week. Sending good thoughts your way!

  3. 4

I love sirachi sauce! Had my parents bring some over to Europe because its great on eggs, veggies, soup… everything! mmmmm.

  4. 5

We all sneak stuff into the movies. I hope I never get frisked.

  5. 6

I’m all about sneaking snacks into the movies! ;) My husband and I do it all the time. Thank goodness for gigantic purses, right?! I need to make an almond butter and jelly sandwich – that sounds so good!

  6. 8

Me and my dad used to eat Pho like every week! So good!

  7. 9

Sounds like a fun, relaxing day. Where is this place you speak of… Lime & Basil? I’m from the Burlington area and am always heading out to Chapel Hill one a month or so to visit my good friend, Trader Joe. I’d love to try this restaurant out sometime but other than Franklin St. and the Trader Joe’s store in the shopping plaza, I don’t have a good sense of the Chapel Hill area.

I am always too nervous to take food into the movies, but I usually take something that does not attract a lot of attention!

  9. 12

Sounds like a fabulous day! And hey sometimes you just need a good pb&j sandwich!

  10. 13

I have plans to see Like Crazy this weekend! As the previews make my heart leap to my throat and tear up, I can only imagine the water works that will occur on Sunday. I think the actress is SO stunningly beautiful!

  11. 15

Love pb&j for dinner! Classic :D

  12. 16

    Ahahah you sneaky mofos!

  13. 18

Theyre super strict in the cinemas in Mumbai about sneaking food in. Last time they tried to confiscate my food, I made a fuss that i needed it for medical reasons/”- they bought it :)

  14. 20

I haven’t seen that movie yet, but I keep hearing about it! And ugh finals… Mine start next week too.

  15. 22

There are three Pho places within walking distance of my house (two normal, one vegan). It’s the best cold weather soup.

  16. 23

Vietnamese beef (chicken, tofu) noodle soup? I’ve had it pho sure. ;)

  17. 25

Anne, I went to see it TWICE this weekend. Gah, it was so real and raw, so well done! I thought it captured the course of a first love, especially those gray areas, beautifully. I think the ending was truthful, albeit sad.

Did you know they shot it with a Canon 7D DSLR and the actors went off a 50-page outline? Crazy cool!

No way, really?! The acting was amazing! And the filming was great, too – loved the interesting angles and simple close ups of their faces. Loved the collage of them sleeping that summer, too!

  19. 28

I love almond butter and jelly sandwiches for dinner. I make that for myself whenever my husband works late!

  20. 29

I LOVED “Like Crazy.” I thought it was very well done and at the end it was as if I’d been through the ups and downs with them. I also liked how it ended, not necessarily all roses like many Hollywood flicks. Instead, it was really left up to your own interpretation. I hope it gets some Oscar attention!

  21. 31

Finals should be illegal. I hate them even when I am the one giving them. Blech.

There is a place in Colorado called “pho shizzle” and it immediately became the awesomest hipster soup joint ever.

  22. 33

Glad you guys had a great visit! :) I haven’t seen the movie but I read an article about it: one cool thing, the majority of the dialogue was improvised! definitely a refreshing directorial style!

  23. 35

Seriously—doing that half and half trick with the different fruit spreads?! GENIUS!

  24. 37

I love Pho! I’d never had it til I moved to DC and found this awesome little spot in Arlington.. it’s so stinkin good, yet so simple!
