The Most Beautiful Running Sunrise Yet & Early Birthday Celebrations

I hope you guys aren’t tired of seeing photos of my early morning running adventures around D.C. yet, because yesterday morning, my run was interrupted with this absolutely stunning view:

IMG_0287

It’s so pretty it almost looks fake, right?

IMG_0289

Well, it wasn’t fake and it sure made getting out of bed worthwhile.

My running buddy Mary and I met up in the dark at 6:15 a.m., ready to tackle 7 miles (and by ready to tackle, I mean wishing we were still in bed).

IMG_0278

We could tell it was going to be a really pretty, clear morning, so we headed down towards the Key Bridge – it’s one of the best seats in the house for the rising sun in DC.

IMG_0280

From there, we ran through a sleepy Georgetown:

IMG_0282

And down along the water towards Memorial Bridge. This photo below is one of my favorites of the morning – how cool is the combination of the huge moon, the lights from the Key Bridge reflecting on the water, and the kayakers? It took my breath away.

IMG_0283

We stopped for a quick photo along the water:

IMG_0286

And then we ran over Memorial Bridge and down onto the Mt. Vernon Trail along the Potomac. By then, the sun was just starting to come out to play behind the monuments across the river.

IMG_0288

We didn’t think we would hit 7 miles with the loop we did, so we added on a fun trail loop lap around Roosevelt Island.

IMG_0290

I hadn’t been on here in way too long – so pretty!

IMG_0291

When we started making our way back up the hill of death leaving Rosslyn, we discovered that we’d overshot our distance. Oops! 8 miles instead of 7? Sure, why not. 🙂 Last week I ended a run a mile early because I really wasn’t feeling it, so I guess this evens it out!

IMG_0292

Splits:

  • Mile 1: 9:12
  • Mile 2: 8:12
  • Mile 3: 8:45
  • Mile 4: 8:52
  • Mile 5: 8:51
  • Mile 6: 9:11
  • Mile 7: 9:14
  • Mile 8: 9:11

I was pretty pumped about our pace for the last mile on that big hill! It was ROUGHHHH but we pushed through it. 🙂 Thanks for the awesome run, Mary!

And now, I have a fun weekend ahead because tomorrow is my birthday! I’ll be turning the big 3-1. The celebrations started last night – my mom and I had a ladies night out at Sea Catch in Georgetown.

IMG_0296

On beautiful nights like last night, their outdoor patio is amazing. It’s overlooking the canal in Georgetown so it’s nice and secluded and has beautiful views.

IMG_0295

I didn’t get pictures of the rest of dinner since it was dark out, but I started with the oysters, my mom and I shared a really tasty salad, and then I had the crab cakes as my entrée. Sea Catch is my favorite place for crab cakes in DC – they are all crab, almost no filler! (By the way – I recently updated my FAQ page with a more extensive list of my favorite restaurants in DC and VA, if you’re interested!) Thanks for the dinner date, Mom! 🙂

On the docket for the rest of the weekend is a fun birthday dinner out with friends tonight, a day of outdoorsy adventures with Matt tomorrow… aaaand a 19 mile run on Sunday for marathon training. Eek!

Have a great weekend, my friends! 🙂

p.s. I updated the Jamba Juice/Quaker giveaway post with the winner – the winning comment is pictured at the end of the post. Go see if it’s you! 🙂

Beautiful pics! I like the one with the Washington Monument. Doesn't the scaffolding make it look like a strip of film?

Happy birthday Anne! Your pictures are making me feel guilty that I am missing out on these views! But makes me feel lucky that we do live in a pretty awesome place. :) And because it's Friday: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T1RMuoQnKo A rap about our hood. An oldie, but goodie. Your pictures are absolutely stunning! And good for you for actually stopping to realize the beauty ... sometimes on early runs I feel like the most beautiful sight could pass me by and I wouldn't notice because I'm still half asleep :). And ... Happy Birthday! Hope it's wonderful!

Your photos are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I so wish that my work schedule allowed me to get my runs done in the morning, but since I get to work by 6:45am I 'm left with running in the evenings. Happy Birthday! Hope you enjoy all of your weekend celebrations!

Happy early birthday! Have a GREAT day! I love the pic with the moon and the reflecting water:-) It kind of looks like they are sculling a two-man shell (crew boat). I rowed crew in college and kayak now, but I can't recall such a serene row ever! Guess I'll have to come to DC to get the experience;-) cheers!!

I'll say Happy Birthday now as I know I won't have a chance tomorrow!!! Beautiful pics, they really are stunning! What sorta temp is it in the morning there at the mo? It's gotten so chilly here in Ireland...about 5 degrees celcius at 6am, time for the long sleeves!

Absolutely gorgeous pics Anne! Doesn't it just take your mind off your running as you feel so lucky to be out there experiencing all of that? Especially love the shot with the moon and kayakers too! (No, not getting sick of your DC pics as I'm in Melbourne and it's great to see other parts of the world. ;) ) Happy birthday!!!

Happy early birthday! Your amazing sunrise pics gave me goosebumps! I get to run along a stunning waterfront path and am so grateful for the gorgeous water views and gentle coastal breeze (Woy Woy, Central Coast, NSW, Australia). I ran my very first half marathon training run this morning (actually 21.2km!) in 2:06 and passed a young mum pushing a stroller who looked uncannily like you with the same lovely smile :-)
