Weekend Adventures

Hey guys! I figured I’d pop in to say hello even though I know some of you are probably off enjoying the holiday! 🙂

We had a great weekend – a good combination of relaxing at home, spending time with friends, and getting in fun workouts – perfect! On Friday, Matt and I kicked things off with happy hour + dinner at Screwtop, a cute wine bar in Clarendon, with friends Heather and Mike. Obviously a sparkling rose and nachos needed to happen. Screwtop has THE best nachos – omg.

The four of us made short work of the nachos and then Matt and I both had salads for our entrees. Balance, my friends! I forgot to take a picture of my salad, but it was less exciting than the nachos anyway. 😉

After dinner we walked next door to Bakeshop and finished off the evening with cookies! I had an oatmeal blueberry cookie – delish!

On Saturday, I was up and out for an early run date with friends! It was rainy and cold but not cold enough to be snowing/sleeting, which was nice, since that’s what was originally called for!

There were a ton of people out and about despite the dreary morning, and we ended up having a fun run! I was with my friends Sokphal and Diane, plus a couple of Sokphal’s friends. It ended up being warmer than I thought it would be (high 30’s) and I was totally overdressed – I haven’t quite remembered how to dress for in between temperatures yet! I ended up having to just carry my coat in my hand the whole time – oh well!

I covered 6 and a half miles with the gang and then they went on to do more. They put the hard sell on me continuing with them, but 6.45 felt perfect and I knew it would leave me feeling good vs. exhausted the rest of the day, so I declined any extra miles. 🙂

It was rainy and gross the rest of the day so Matt and I chilled at home! I hit the grocery store on my way home from the run so we had lots of provisions, and Matt whipped us up an epic brunch feast. Bacon + eggs with veggies and avocado + berries + a shot of espresso with a splash of whole milk.

A bit later I prepped a slow cooker meal for us to enjoy for dinner – a Moroccan Chicken Stew packed full of veggies! It was so good – I’ll share the recipe later this week.

As for yesterday, I had fun workout date plans with my friend Karen! We met up a little early to grab coffee (well, tea for me – I can’t do coffee before a workout because it’s hit or miss on my stomach) and take a stroll to catch up. It was a beautiful morning!

After our stroll we hit up a CorePower Yoga sculpt class at the Georgetown studio. Our fave instructor, Mandy, was teaching – we hadn’t been to her class in way too long! So hard and awesome – it’s basically hot yoga + a boot camp in one.

Post-workout lunch – leftover chicken veggie stew with some brown rice.

Since it was so gorgeous out, Matt and I spent yesterday afternoon doing a short hike with friends!

We hit up Scott’s Run Nature Preserve – lots of nice trails to explore!

Such a treat to have a sunny and warmer day in January (it was in the high 40’s/low 50’s)!

After our hike the four of us got an early dinner at Citizen Burger Bar in Clarendon – this has become our weekend ritual lately (hike + burgers) with our friends Shane and Matt – I love it!

Matt and I shared a salad to start:

And then it was burgers all around! I think this was my best combo yet – grass fed beef + pickles + bacon + cheddar cheese + sauteed mushrooms + ketchup/mustard/bbq sauce on a truffled brioche bun (brushed with truffle oil – SO GOOD). Plus sweet potato fries!

Pretty solid weekend. I hope you guys had a good one, too! Matt has the day off from work today so I’m going to take most of the afternoon off so we can hang. He just made us another batch of these awesome gluten free banana muffins this morning – I’ll share the recipe details tomorrow! So good.

Tell me about the best thing you ate this weekend – or your most fun workout!

Do you tend to overdress or underdress for runs? I prefer to be slightly underdressed since I always get hot quickly, but when it starts to get cold out I always overdress at first before I remember what combinations work best!

Not sure I could have stopped at 6.45 - I would have had to run a round 6.5 miles. Tom saw me running past the house this morning for the round 6! :)

I've never heard of that nature preserve but it isn't too far away and looks really pretty! I'm going to have to mentally bookmark it as a future hiking spot.

Everything looks amazing! Is Matt still having to eat gluten free? My husband, Matt and I traveled to TX to visit with my parents. The visit was amazing but far too short. Unfortunately, we did not move enough at all, so I'm excited to get back to the gym. We had an incredible lunch at HG Sply Co., which included 5-spice short ribs with a cuke mint salad, curried sweet potato soup, and Scottish salmon over zucchini noodles with plenty of flavors. :)

Hey Anne! I live in the DC/NoVA area and I will be training for the cherry blossom this year. I know you do a lot of your runs on the DC trails, but I'm wondering how you get there, where you park, and where you start on the trails? It always seems to be a big mystery of how to actually get to the beautiful DC trails, especially the one that go along the water fronts. Thanks!

Hi Tanya! For the waterfront trail, that's in Virginia and is called the Mt. Vernon Trail. You can access the trail right in Rosslyn by the Key Bridge. Other parking spots are accessed on the northbound side of the GW Parkway, which is the road that runs along next to the trail. You can park at Roosevelt Island (close to Rosslyn), or Gravelly Point (near the airport), or in Old Town Alexandria (the trail goes through it), or all the way down at Mt. Vernon where the trail begins. For the Capital Crescent trail/C&O Canal Trail in DC I run on a lot, you can park at Fletcher's Cove, or park under the Key Bridge in Georgetown, down by the Key Bridge Boathouse -- the start of the trail is there. Good luck and have fun!

Mmm I'm excited for that muffin recipe. Right now I have the gluten free granola bars, the ones made with chickpea flour, in the oven. I wasn't a huge fan of a few bites, so I crumbled them up, added some cinnamon and have it low and slow in the oven to become granola for yogurt. I decided to take yesterday and today off, needed a few rest days. Back at it tomorrow morning at 5:45, for some reason those are easy to get up for.

LOVE Bakeshop! I worked there on the weekends when I lived in Arlington years ago! Spent the weekend running around London with my boyfriend! Best workout was our 9.5 mile run on Friday - We ran all around the city and caught all the major sites! Best thing we ate was everything at Borough Market on Saturday - SUCH a cool market with so many fun things to try!

I tend to overdress for runs. I have a hard time remembering what is good to wear for certain temps. It was 65 today in Nashville for my run and not too humid so it felt perfect!

I ty to appreciate how much I will wam up quickly in a run in cold weather. Start with gloves and hat and try to avoid long pants and an overly comfortable - at the outset - top!
