Adventures in Pittsburgh

Hello, friends! I hope you all had fun weekends. I spent mine in Pittsburgh!

As you guys know, Matt is from Pittsburgh and his parents still live there. We hadn’t been up since Christmas so we decided it would be fun to pay the city a visit when the weather was nicer! We had a lovely weekend. Here are some of the highlights. :)

Saturday morning began with a homemade egg frittata courtesy of Matt’s dad. He cooked some bacon in a pan, then sautéed some garlic, shallots, and spinach in the leftover grease. When they were cooked down, he added the bacon back in, plus some whisked eggs, let it set briefly, then added feta cheese on top and popped the whole pan in the oven to cook the rest of the way.

The result was delicious and pretty, as you can see! We enjoyed it with some fruit on the side.

After Matt and I went for a short run, we headed downtown! The weather was beautiful and we stopped for a quick lunch – a Greek pita wrap for me and Matt’s dad, and Primanti Bros for Matt – the infamous Pittsburgh sandwich shop that puts fries on their sandwiches. I tried a bite – delicious but intense!

From there, it was on to PNC Park for the baseball game – the Pittsburgh Pirates were playing the Washington Nationals! Hmm… who to root for?! :)

Beer + baseball = solid Saturday afternoon. The Nationals won. ;)

We had a fun dinner out that night with a big group of friends, then everyone retired to Matt’s parent’s house for smores – they have a fire pit that we all decided it was time to put to good use! So fun. :)

The final excitement of the weekend was hiking! Matt has been telling me about McConnells Mill State Park for years now, so I was really excited to check it out.

We headed over to the park with Matt’s parents yesterday for a fun hike and picnic lunch. Perfect day for it!

The whole crew:

After hiking for about an hour, it was time for a late lunch. Matt’s parents are picnic pros. :)

Cheese, meat, veggies, fruit, bread, and all sorts of dips! So delicious, and eating in the woods always makes food taste better, I think. :)

With our bellies full and our legs tired, Matt and I hit the road back to DC. It was nice to get away for the weekend, but of course it went by too quickly!

What did you guys get into this weekend? Did anyone run the Pittsburgh marathon? I didn’t make it down there to spectate, but we saw all the starting line area stuff set up when we were downtown on Saturday!

I love Pittsburgh! Primanti Brothers is such a heart attack – I mean treat ;) Looks like such a great weekend – the weather is wonderful!

  2. 2

Ah! I am from Pittsburgh and my brother ran the half yesterday, but I spectated the NJ marathon yesterday instead. My boyfriend (also from Pittsburgh-we met in Colorado and bonded as Steelers fans) and I explored McConnell Mills this past winter at Thanksgiving, after it had been like 20 years since we had been there as kids :) So glad you had a good weekend in the ‘burgh.

  3. 3

I was at the Buccos game yesterday. Looks like you enjoyed your time in Pittsburgh! :)

I heard 3 rivers stadium was really nice, have always wanted to see a game there! Looks fun in your photos- awesome view from the stadium of the water!

  5. 5

I loooove Pittsburgh. Seems like it gets a horrible rep for some unwarranted reason. I looked at jobs there but alas, it was not meant to be yet, ha.

  6. 6

A fun filled weekend! I need to get out for a hike so bad! I was working through from Thursday up until this evening (7.30pm here now)…bank holiday weekend in Ireland. Incredibly busy but great fun with the food festival on in the village. Got in a 12.5km run this morning before work with the sun coming up though!

  7. 7

Great photos of Pittsburgh! You did our city justice :) I did the relay yesterday (have done the half and full in previous years). Perfect weather. Glad you enjoyed your weekend!

I’m so jealous, born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA!! Head up to 7Springs for some great hiking, you will love it! I wish they have Primanti’s here! But at the same time I’m glad they dont’, I don’t need the 6,000 calories per sandwich! Glad you ahd a great time!

  9. 9

I ran the full…holy hills!! This Savannah girl was not ready for all those rolling hills!! Good grief BUT the course and spectators were AMAZING!!!! Loved it!!!

  10. 11

Great photos! I did the relay yesterday and it was really a PERFECT day to run :)

What did you think of McConnells Mill?? It’s a perfect place to hike in the summer!

  11. 13

I ran the Pittsburgh Marathon yesterday…it was my first full and I finished under my goal time of four hours — 3:57! :) It was a great (but very hilly!) city. Best of luck as you start training for your first full — you’ll be great!

  12. 15

Looks like you had a beautiful weekend! I’m supremely jealous you got to see the Nats – they don’t come out where I’m at until late in the season.

  13. 16

Ahhh another Pittsburgh fan! My entire family is from the Pittsburgh area so we’re all diehard Pirates, Penguins and Steelers fans. Too bad the Penguins were in NYC or you could have celebrated yesterday’s win with the entire city :) Glad you had such a great weekend! I’m beyond jealous – I need to make a trip there ASAP.

Glad you had a good time! I was in Pittsburgh this weekend as well – ran the half marathon! And I wore the same shirt that you did yesterday (nwm finisher). It’s a nice city, glad you got to see some of it :)

Congrats on running the half! And I love the NWM shirt :)

        Danielle says:

Thanks! This was my 3rd time doing it and it’s definitely a race I’d recommend (despite all the hills, as others have said)!

        The shirts are awesome!

  15. 20

I love the colors of your outfit in the first picture–is that a dress you’re wearing?

  16. 22

I ran the half! It was my first one ever & a ton of fun. :) Perfect weather this weekend… glad you enjoyed your visit!

  17. 24

Spent the weekend at the beach! The boyfriend’s parents entered their wooden boat into a local boat show and won! Whoot! Looks like you had a great weekend! That ginormous sandwich looks pretty awesome!

  18. 25

My bestie and I completed the Hero Rush on Saturday in Clarksburg, MD. It was an awesome day and we were so proud to be part of such a great event.

  19. 27

Yum love the idea of fries in a sandwich! :)

    Also love picnics.

  20. 28

That picnic reminds me of the picnic’s that my mom and her girlfriends do, expect there’s always lot of wine in their pictures;) Looks like a great weekend!

  21. 29

Sounds like you had a great weekend :) That picnic looked great :P

I went to a beer tasting festival this weekend, and a Cinco de Mayo festival afterwards. I drank a lot of tasty beers and ate a lot of tasty food!

  22. 30

What a nice weekend! And the Nationals won, too! :-)

  24. 33

I ran the Pittsburgh half this weekend! It was a lot tougher than I anticipated and I didn’t PR, which was a bummer because I was really hoping to (recap: Congrats on your half last weekend, by the way!

  25. 35

I have been wanting to eat at Pirmanti Bros for years but haven’t made it up to Pittsburgh yet. I grew up an hour and a half from Pitt so I love their sports teams and have been a bunch of times but have never managed to eat there yet.
