Hello my friends! Guess what? Thanks to your advice and enthusiasm, I ran 10 miles this morning with my friend Kathleen, and I didn’t feel like death! 🙂 What changed? Well, per your advice we started earlier, stuck with shadier routes, and I also just felt so much more motivated after reading all of your inspiring comments. One of my favorite was, “Why run? Because we can.” So true. Thank you for the reminder. 🙂 That, and being reminded to not worry about pace or walking breaks when it’s this hot!

Funny story, in case you didn’t already read about it on my Instagram – see how my Garmin has a hair tie attached to it? Well, it’s been SO hot in DC this week that the glue that holds my Garmin watch together actually melted!! It was literally opening up today and I had to improvise and secure it with the only thing I had on hand – an extra hair tie. I’m so glad it worked! I’ve had the watch for 5 years now, so I’m wondering if I should go the superglue route or perhaps just go for a replacement. We’ll see.

Kathleen and I had some gorgeous views on our run this morning and we had fun chatting the whole way, too. My favorite view was this picture of the sun rising over the tidal basin, with views of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. So pretty – and we had it practically all to ourselves!

We finished and started the run on the National mall, which was rough since there’s not a lot of shade. But the rest of the run took us around the tidal basin and along Hains Point, down the waterfront, up Rock Creek Park quite aways, and back. Most of it was nice and shaded and with water breezes, so while it was of course really hot, it wasn’t terrible. We also took a couple short breaks. I brought an espresso Hammer Gel – the caffeine really helped!

Here are our splits:

  • Mile 1: 9:18
  • Mile 2: 9:12
  • Mile 3: 9:17
  • Mile 4: 9:20
  • Mile 5: 9:37
  • Mile 6: 9:27
  • Mile 7: 9:04
  • Mile 8: 11:17 (forgot to stop the watch while we were waiting at a light)
  • Mile 9: 8:52
  • Mile 10: 9:03

I was really pleased with the pace given the heat, and I felt good the whole time, too, which is way more than I can say for my runs over the past 3 weeks, so yay!

10 miles was actually my long run for this week – I got it out of the way early because I have a friend coming into town this weekend and we want to be able to sleep in and go to yoga on Saturday, and on Sunday we’re doing the Merrell Down & Dirty 5k obstacle run! Should be a blast. 🙂

When I arrived home, I had my standard chocolate milk (read more about my pre/during/after running nutrition in my Marathon Training Plan post from yesterday if you missed it), and then after getting cleaned up I enjoyed one of my favorite breakfasts – my High Protein Breakfast Pancake. Yep, still obsessed.

I hope you all have a great night – anyone else have any hot running successes this week? 🙂

I had my best day of speed work on the track yet. I also thought I might throw up once or twice, but since I didn't, that definitely marks a great day of running in the heat! Nice work on your 10 miler!

So glad you were able to dig deep and find your running mojo. I would suggest an indoor treadmill, but we all know it is a 'dreadmill', especially if you have many miles to get in. ;) It is so ridiculously hot and humid this week in Charleston, SC that I melt just walking to my car from the gym. All I want is COLD smoothies, coconut water, crisp salads, and just to be honest, non-dairy ice cream. :) I do love those protein pancakes of yours though. I usually stir in a scoop of peanut flour too! Have a good one.

Way to go doing your run in the heat! I agree that using positive mantras can REALLY help--with all kinds of running issues. I used them to get through marathon training. I like the "Why run? Because we can." because it reminds us to be grateful for the fact that we get to run, that we're able to run, and that we are choosing to run. (Even though sometimes in the midst of a loooong run it feels like something we have to do or are being forced to do instead!)

That's awesome! I went out at 6:30 this morning and it was miserable already. Even though I only did a couple miles, every step was agony haha! But I always feel much more accomplished after a really hard run!

i made the mistake of going out in the afternoon for a run. I was thinking it would be fine since I was in a shaded trail, but boy was i wrong!

Congrats on getting through the 10 miles and the views are gorgeous! I have not been too successful this week about getting outside for a run. I've been doing Zumba indoors in the a/c. ;-) I'm hoping the weather is going to break a bit this weekend, so I can get outside. It's intense out there!

Well done! Nothing beats that awesome successful run feeling! Did my longest run to date on Monday just gone in the early morning sunshine....9.5 miles. Slowly but surely building up the distant and it felt great!

Nice job in that heat! So glad to see you are feeling better about your training plan. Last night, we ran threshold work at the track in 95F heat. Youch. I was hanging in under 8:00 pace, but it wasn't easy. (Now I'm up in Quebec to train, with long sleeves. Yes........)

Great pace for the heat wave! It doesn't get hot here (about 65F is considered HOT), so I'm sitting here tonight BBQing with my husband in pants and a sweatshirt.

You are having much more success than me. I ran on Tuesday and struggled through a 5 miler. I finished, but it wasn't pretty. That was probably an even score. Yesterday I could not motivate myself. This morning, I snoozed through my morning run, so I had to run into work, instead. I clocked in 3 miles that way, then ran 2.5 miles to my sisters and then after spending a few hours with her, ran another 2.5 miles home (in that wicked storm we got). So I guess maybe that's a win? It's so hot though, I have zero motivation to get out there and run. I can't wait until next week..I am thoroughly enjoying the weather reports.

Great job Anne! Sometimes I think it's all about mindset too! I told myself this week's training had to be strong as I'm already behind due to the move. I've left the house each day with a purpose for my runs - getting stronger. It's really helping! Love the hairband on the Garmin!! :)

Nice Job!!! I would encourage you to look into Garmins right now, they have the 310 which is about to be discountinued, so you could get a good deal on it. Otherwise they have the 910 which is very fancy.

Yes! I had a wonderful running success....for the first time in my 33 years I ran two miles straight! I know that it might not sound like a lot to some, but in my little world this is groundbreaking. Even better, after I was done I was not completely wiped out...I was so happy and excited I actually laughed out lout. Can't wait to do it again!!!!

Hilarious about your Garmin! Do you run with your phone? If so, download the "Map my Run" app- I've recently started to use it & find it really accurate..along with distance & time, it also gives you your splits and route - highly recommend it!
