Hey guys – happy Friday! I’m happy to report that Matt and I have successfully made it through all our leftover Thanksgiving turkey and turkey soup. No leftover left behind!

mediterranean turkey soup 2

Since we kept the homemade turkey broth separate from the leftover turkey and any veggies, we were able to make variations on the soup to keep things interesting. After a couple days of the basic turkey + carrots + celery + rice soup, our final iteration was a Mediterranean twist that I threw together. I stirred in a ton of spinach, a can of chickpeas (drained), and a can of diced tomatoes (not drained). Plus the rest of the leftover turkey. It was a great combo! While making it, we also snacked on our of our favorite appetizers – sliced cucumber topped with a little olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Delicious!

I also polished off the rest of the leftover homemade cranberry sauce – one last microwave banana oatmeal combo with cottage cheese and cranberry. Yum!

Zoomed out view of the table for my Zara lovers. 😉 Keeping watch, as always!

Matt’s soccer leagues are all in winter hiatus right now so he expressed interest in joining me for a quick run this morning before work. Awesome! I didn’t bring my watch (still loving casual non-training mode) but we probably ran about 3 miles. It was nice to start the day together!

And now, while on the topic of running, to kick this weekend off on an exciting note – I’m sharing my annual Brooks winter running accessories/stocking stuffer giveaway! Thank you to Brooks for offering this again for you guys as part of my run happy blogger ambassadorship. 🙂

The best winter run I've ever had was when I was training for my first half marathon. I remember it was seven cold and clear miles and I felt like a million bucks! I still have my watch log from that day. It was such a proud moment! My running goals for 2017 include getting a new half PR!

One of the best winter runs I've had was running around 6:30 AM one morning in a small town in Alaska. I ran in the dark, on the snow, on dark and windy roads. Although I was scared a car might pass by me without seeing me (no street lamps!), the night-black sky was full of stars, and it was beautiful seeing the crisp white snow on the spruce trees and having the roads all to myself!

I did a 6 mile run - which was long for me at the time. It was so windy that day, which made it extra cold. I was nervous about it, but I made it through the whole thing. It helped me to not be scared of the wind and cold, and now I really enjoy running in cold weather (although I still don't love the wind)

Cheating a bit here, but the best run I had in 2016 was my Turkey Trot in Chicago. Not so much because of my 5k time, but because I got to help my 2-year-old run her first race afterward. (She ran 50 yards to the finish line in the 2- to 4-year-old group. She was SO proud of herself! And they had medals for all the kids.) My time in the 5k was terrible. I stopped to take pictures, plus I hurt myself in early November (slipped doing another race on a gravelly path and twisted my ankle badly) and could only run about half the race ... but it was so fun. There were 9,000 people racing!

I've been pregnant most of this year (or so it feels like!), but I've still been running and have even trained for two half marathons. I have found an awesome group of people to run with this year, so almost every long run with them is just like a gossip session with friends. 2017 will be a re-building year, but I'm hoping the Broad Street Run will be my "big" comeback after I have my baby in January!

The best winter runs I've had would probably consist of the entire months of December/January of 2015. Living in New England, the weather is so unpredictable, but we were getting in great runs almost 4 days a week because of the mild weather. It was the prefect combo of sun and cool air, without the snow and ice to slip on!

Great blog! My 2017 running goals include continuing to get back into a regular running routine after having my baby this October, complete my 24th half marathon in April and find a few more new-to-me halfs to complete by the end of 2017. My best winter run was one in the pouring rain when a car went out off their way to drive through a puddle that made a huge splash on me...and I just laughed because I was already soaked! Happy running to all!

Favorite winter run about 3 yrs ago while running on bike path we came to a mile + patch that wasn't plowed and had drifted up to our knees. We proceeded to run through it complaining the whole way. However, looking back it was the best time ever.."high stepping" it through that drifted patch laughing with my friends.

My best winter run was Christmas Day! I took a slow, easy pace through the neighborhood early that morning. I saw families gathering at the front porch, relatives hugging one another as they unpacked their baggage, and Christmas trees twinkling through the living room windows. Every single neighbor I saw gave a big friendly wave. The other runners I encountered all wished me a Merry Christmas. One woman gave me a cheer for getting out there on Christmas morning. There is nothing like feeling the support of your neighborhood behind you.

Hi Anne, I have a question I've been thinking about for a while. I feel like I think about food a lot, always want to do better, but still seem to make bad decisions, so it's become something I obsess a bit over and feel negatively about. But how do you tell he difference between being a "healthy eater" and being a "disordered eater"? It seems like such a fine line, when so many "healthy" eaters count calories, exclude whole food groups (carbs, for example), and so on. To me, some of that seems a little disordered, but is it? Just wondering if I need to think differently about my "healthy" eating goals. Thanks so much!

Hi Katie! In my opinion, "healthy eaters" are those who are not preoccupied with food, who don't have restrictions (they eat what they want when they want it, but they also think about what foods make their body feel its best), etc. I wouldn't consider anyone who counts calories or excludes whole food groups (without medical necessity) "healthy" - that is disordered. It sounds to me like if you are preoccupied with food and experiencing a lot of guilt around food choices, you might benefit from moving towards an intuitive eating approach with the help of a dietitian. I'd encourage you to check out the Intuitive Eating book and see if any of it resonates with you. If you'd be interested in potentially working together, please check out my business website, www.AnneTheRD.com. Wishing you the best!

Then I ran 3 miles with my other dog and I get home and take off my shoes to find a blood filled sock and then I see that my dog had also just ripped off his dewclaw somehow on the run.... My running goals for next year include taking more time to run outside early in the morning or later at night! I can't deal with the extreme heat in FL, but it's easier in the morning and night when it's not so hot.

I do love to run when it's super lightly snowing. Not a fan of the snow covering the sidewalks, as it inevitable does in Boston, but that soft snow with Christmas lights twinkling is pretty magical.

A few years ago it was so warm on Christmas Day (for Va) that my brother & I went running on the beach in shorts & t-shirts, & when it started pouring, decided "the heck with it" & went swimming too!

My fave winter runs are either with my running club when we go out to take a tour of the best Christmas lights or when I go to Park City every year and get to run around their beautiful downtown and ski resorts (and it always winds up snowing on me!).

The best winter run I had was through the streets of Woodley Park while it was snowing! It was a bit slippery but so beautiful. My 2016 goals were just to get back into running after a year or so of being plagued by plantar fasciitis, sesamoiditis, and IT band issues. Hoping to run the DC rock 'n' roll this march!

This fall, my podiatrist diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis and achilles tendinitis in my left foot so I haven't run at all since October. Its been mentally and physically frustrating. So while my 2016 running goal was to increase my sprinting speed, I've had to postpone that goal and take care of my body. My running goal for 2017 is to get healthy and get back out there. I ran a half marathon in 2015 and I'd love to do another in 2017

I love fall/winter cold weather running. Today is actually the California International Marathon, which I ran in 2013 when it was 25 degrees at the start and only 32 degrees by the finish. The aid stations were death traps with all the spilled water freezing and creating slip hazards. You had to walk through the aid stations or risk eating it (I saw a few people who were walking and still fell). But I do love the crisp cold air of winter running.
