Epic Yoga, Yafa, and a Dreary Track Workout

Hey gang! It’s ANOTHER dreary day over here – not rainy, but cloudy. I’m so tired of all this gloom! Chillier than usual for this time of year, too, although at least that means that wearing pants and biking to the metro doesn’t leave me overheated. 🙂

My fitness routine this week has been yoga-heavy, which I love. Sleeping in a bit (aka  not getting up at 6 a.m. for a workout) and then going to lunchtime yoga downtown is my favorite. No shower required so it’s super easy – all I need is a change of clothes! And it’s the best way to slow down and de-stress in the middle of the busy workday.

I hit up lunchtime yoga on Monday and Wednesday at Epic Yoga via ClassPass (<—$20 off affiliate link) with a coworking space friend. On Monday, we treated ourselves to lunch bowls afterward at Yafa, one of my DC faves. I get a big bowl with brown rice, lettuce, a billion veggies, hummus, chicken, and yogurt dill sauce. Sooooo delicious and satisfying.

We are especially obsessed with their roasted cauliflower!

As for Wednesday, I grabbed Sweetgreen after yoga and took advantage of the 10 minutes of sunshine we randomly got and ate it outside solo, enjoying the fresh air. I’ve been terrible about packing lunch lately when I work downtown because there are so many delicious, healthy, fresh places to eat in DC now! Not the cheapest way to do things, I know, but it makes me happy so I refuse to feel bad about it. 🙂

I do almost always eat lunch at home when I’m working from home, though. Here’s what I made for myself and Matt on Friday when we both worked from home – tuna creations! We only had 2 slices of bread left, so I made a sandwich for him and a big grain salad (with leftover brown rice) for me. The tuna salad was a mix of avocado and dijon mustard as usual, and I threw some homemade balsamic vinaigrette on top of my salad too! Also, since some of you have asked lately – the fun woven wood salad bowls I use all the time are these ones!

As for Tuesday’s workout, I was at the track with my buddies as usual! We JUST beat the rain – it started raining just as I got home after the workout. Whew!

track tuesday workout

It was a tough one:

  • Warm up jog (I did about 0.5 miles)
  • 2000m threshold pace run
  • 2 mins rest
  • Series of 2 to 4 of the following: a 400 (1 lap around the track) at 5k/speedy/hard pace with 1 to 2 minutes rest in between before repeating. I did 3 of them.
  • 2 mins rest
  • 2000m threshold pace run
  • Cool down jog (again about 0.5 miles)

It was a tough one – and appropriate with the short speedy stuff because I have a 5k coming up this weekend! I’m doing the Fit Foodie Run (cute name right?) in Fairfax on Saturday as part of a blogger group. The weather is looking rainy and cold so fingers crossed the forecast changes! Anyone else running it? Or do it last year? I haven’t raced a 5k in a million years so it will be fun to mix it up!

Have a great day, my friends!

Do you usually pack lunch or eat out? I used to ALWAYS pack lunch when in grad school and when working downtown full time back in the day because the options weren’t delicious, but now that there are so many great places in DC I treat myself to lunch out more often!

I did the fit foodie 5k in fairfax last year (won in a blogger giveaway) and loved it!..well I loved all the food samples and more food samples lol. I was pretty full and a lot of restaurants participated. I signed up for the race this year too but bummed about the weather. I'm hoping it will start raining later in the morning.

I always pack my lunch for work. It's healthy and cheap! We have a cafeteria on campus where I work but I've never been impressed by the offerings. And there's no where nearby to walk to. Even though I don't love the dreary weather I did appreciate it being overcast on my 9 mile run last night!

Yeah, when I've had sub-par options in the past I've always packed my lunch - I hear ya! Nice job on the 9 miler!

I meant to ask you a question about the cheese powder stuff you shared that you put on your popcorn. I ordered some and it doesn't stick to my popcorn. Do you coat the popcorn with olive oil or butter first so it doesn't just call to the bottom of the bowl?

Yes, try coating the popcorn in a little oil first! That will help. Enjoy!

I did the Fit Foodie last year as well with my company. The swag is the best I've ever seen at a race! So many great things I'm still using. We're doing it again this year and hoping everyone makes it out despite the rain!

I try to always bring lunch. I work at a 50k a year university and all the food options on campus are insanely expensive and not always healthy.

Yeah I wasn't impressed by the options at UNC - which was ironic considering I was in the public health school area. Their cafe just had some lame packaged options - I always brought all my food for the day when I'd knew I'd be on campus during lunchtime!

I love your attitude about eating out and I completely agree! If it makes you happy and it's not breaking the bank, then why not? We typically eat out just once a week, but sometimes, I'm the same way. If it's more convenient, if it's going to spruce up my day a bit, if my coworkers decide to go out to eat and I tag along....I try not to beat myself up about it. I know that MOST of the time I'm packing my lunch and eating at home. Good luck on your race!

That 5K sounds like fun! And I wish we had such great lunch options near my work! I work in an industrial estate so the only options are truck stops :( I love packing my own lunch though so it isn't too much of a problem, and once a week my best friend in the office and I go out for lunch, usually sushi or a salad bar. It makes a nice change from eating at my desk! I'm on a yoga binge at the moment too. Twice weekly sessions have me ohm-ing with joy :)

Ohm-ing with joy - love that! :) Good for you for packing your lunch - I've worked in areas where the options were crummy too so it was all about that packed lunch. Love that you and your office bestie go out once a week as a treat though - good self care! :)
