Long Weekend Highlights

Hi guys! It feels like Monday but it’s already Tuesday – sweet! I hope most of you got to enjoy a nice long weekend, too. Here are some of the highlights from ours!

1) A hike (well, trail stroll) on Sunday afternoon on the beautiful C&O canal trail!

c&o canal trail hike with baby

I used to run out on the C&O canal ALL the time – I’ve logged so many miles there! It’s nice and flat with pretty views, so it was perfect for a walk with Riese (and Freyja the dog) in tow. We ended up walking about 4 miles – I was so tired after but the fresh air felt amazing!

2) Not one but TWO restaurant meals out with Riese, including her first dinner out! These are our “yay for leaving the house!” faces:

new parents made it out

The first outing was brunch on Sunday at Silver Diner with our friend Shane. Riese has been to Silver Diner a few times now, since we go there after my mom’s group meet ups for lunch. She woke up shortly after we got there and wanted to come out of the car seat, but luckily was content to just look around and take in the action.

I started with the kale salad you see pictured above (SO GOOD – great flavor), and then moved on to an omelette with potatoes. The omelette was just okay (it had sweet maple sausage in it, which I’ve decided I just don’t love – savory all the way), but it did the job.

I was pretty nervous about having Riese out because it was REALLY crowded at Silver Diner… the times I’ve been before it’s been pretty dead. Flu and cold season definitely has me scared to have her out… and she just looks so tiny and fragile around all those people, too. I really have to fight the urge to just keep her home and protected all the time… I know it’s good for all of us to get out into the world.

Our second meal out was dinner last night! We had an appointment with the baby feeding specialist (she’s a chiro that specializes in babies – it’s more like baby massage vs. chiro stuff) in Old Town in the afternoon and by the time we were leaving, I had just fed Riese and it was almost 5 so we decided it was the perfect opportunity to try a dinner out! We walked over to Virtue Feed and Grain, and just like before, Riese was asleep in the car seat for about 10 minutes before wanting to come out and see what was happening. We had literally just gotten our beers and were “cheers”-ing when we heard her start crying. Fail!

Matt and I have really perfected the art of the one handed meal. 😉

I’m proud of us for getting her out and about. It’s definitely easier and less stressful to just stay home, but we want to get her (and ourselves) used to going out and about with her more because we always said we want to be the type of parents who still get out and do stuff when they have a baby. Plus, I know it’s as easy as it will ever be right now (before she starts walking, etc.). So, three cheers for progress!

On the homemade food front, I made us a variation on huevos rancheros two mornings for brunch at home – it consisted of a ton of microwave-wilted baby spinach with a corn tortilla, a little brown rice, salsa, avocado, and fried eggs. Quite delish if I do say so myself. 😉

Matt also made us some really good bacon wrapped steaks (with sweet taters and sauteed garlicky spinach) on Saturday night – mmmm.

As for Friday night, we ordered pizza. 🙂 I love having pizza on Fridays – fun start to the weekend. Zara agreed!

We have a big day ahead – we are taking Riese for her frenectomy for her lip tie this afternoon. The baby chiro agreed with the doctor that the tongue looked fine and we should just do the lip tie, and they had a last minute appointment available for this afternoon (and then nothing for a couple weeks) so we decided to just go for it. I’m nervous and really hope it goes okay and that she’s not in too much pain afterwards. I appreciate those of you who shared your stories and tips – made me feel better that this should be a relatively quick procedure and recovery, and that it will hopefully make a difference with breastfeeding and her ability to get enough milk from me!

Have a nice day guys – I’ll see you back here on Thursday with a post about how my eating has changed since Riese arrived, and what supplements I’m taking now post-baby, too. Until then, I’ll leave you with my new favorite photo – those blue eyes! I love them. And her hair is starting to come back now, too!

She is just the absolute cutest! I do love how much you're pushing through any of these awkward phases of trying to adjust to life with baby. I haven't had a child yet, but one of my biggest concerns has been about how much of my life might have to change and how much I would have to give up. Your examples and efforts of still trying to make sure you guys are enjoying life and "getting out there" is really impressive and encouraging!

Riese is adorable! I love that you're taking her out and about with you. I can't imagine how terrifying it is with flu/cold season, but I think you're doing the right thing!

My baby will be 10 weeks this week and we are the same way about taking him out. Trying to start doing it more now because we also always said we would continue to do things we love, travel, hike, etc. It's definitely easier to stay home, but I think if we make it a habit and priority now it will be worth it! Plus, it feels so good to get out more after being cooped up a lot this winter. ;)

Going out to eat with a baby gets easier every time! We took our daughter out from the first week she was born (although it was summer and less germ-y). We definitely stayed out way later when she was an infant and would just sleep in her carrier. We also stuck to really loud restaurants so that if she cried, nobody would even notice. We kept saying that at some point we wouldn't be able to go out to eat anymore, but at 2 1/2 she's so good at restaurants!

That is awesome! I hope that if we get her used to restaurants now she will be okay with them as she gets older, too... we will see! I wish it were consistently warmer out - that would make it a lot easier to be out because we could sit outside and not worry about her crying!

Our daughter had both done, but it was a severe ULT and mild PTT. This release has made a HUGE difference for us! I will say the first few days/week we didn’t see too much improvement but shortly after she started gaining great! I had actually given up ever BF’ing her without a nipple shield (she’d used one from day 1) but she just started latching without it and she’ll be 4 months next week (we had her release at 6 weeks). So, it can take time but in the end it’s so worth if for us and especially them! Good luck!

I'm so happy it helped you guys! This is good to know it might not be instant in terms of the improvement - I will have to manage my expectations. :)

Yeah to getting out, I would get so nervous about taking the babies out when they were small, but I think it is good for everyone's mental health to get our regularly. Hope the lip tie procedure goes well.

You're doing great! I think eating out gets even better and more fun once your kid can sit in a high chair and eat with you. It started getting really fun for us around maybe 8-10 months or so...my son is a year old now and loves to observe all the action and munch his own food. No more one-handed meals. :) So if you get good at eating out now, you'll be golden later on!

We love going out with our (now) 3 and 2 year olds. It's been a habit we got into relatively early (like 6 weeks old early), and they have learned how to handle themselves in restaurants from a very early age. Now we have a routine, and go out every Saturday night as a family. It doesn't always go perfectly, but it's definitely really fun to still be able to try new places with our kiddos. I just wanted to also note that Riese's car seat straps look pretty loose and the buckle very low in that last photo. The car seat lady has some good instructions on proper placement of teh straps and buckles. http://thecarseatlady.com/how-should-a-rear-facing-child-sit-in-his-car-seat/ We moms don't always know everything right away, and I know that we all want the best for our kiddos!

We aren't going out until flu season I over. My daughter is almost 15 months, but our pediatrician encouraged us to keep her home as much as possible.
