Our First Triathlon — Cancelled :(

Friends, I have some very sad news. Me and Matt’s first sprint triathlon next weekend was cancelled 🙁

triathlon

Sigh. As you can imagine, we’re both really bummed. Not only was this our very first triathlon, but we had been training for it for awhile now with brick workouts, etc. Matt’s parent’s are coming into town next weekend and were going to cheer us on, too 🙁 I have no idea why they cancelled it — but looking at the page they apparently didn’t have many people sign up, so I guess that’s why. Sadface. Our weekends in the coming months have already filled up for the most part, but we’re hoping that we can find another one to do at some point before it gets cold. I’ll keep you guys updated, of course!

004

In happier news, we’ve had a seriously beautiful weekend here in NC weather-wise! It’s been brutally hot the past couple weeks, but on Thursday I woke up to a beautiful, cool, almost fall-like morning. It’s stayed nice all weekend!

I’ve spent most of the weekend running, swimming, and hanging out with friends outdoors 🙂 Yesterday, I headed out to the Tobacco Trail to take advantage of the cooler weather for a morning run!

011

I was supposed to run with a few of the girls, but they bailed, so I was on my own. I completely forgot to wear my Garmin watch (the horror!), so I improvised and used my cell phone alarm to time myself, instead! I stuck it into my CamelBak and set the alarm for 30 minutes later — when I heard the alarm, I’d know it was time to turn around.

014

My run ended up turning into more of a walk/run due to some stomach issues, but it still felt nice to be outdoors 🙂 I’m never really all that into running in the summer — the heat just destroys me! Pretty much all of my runs lately have turned into half walks, but no worries. When fall brings us cooler weather, I’ll be all over the running again — but for now, I’m sticking to super short runs and enjoying kickboxing, yoga, walking, biking, and swimming instead 🙂

After my run, I met my friend Libby for brunch at one of my favorites — Foster’s Market in Durham!

006

I had the breakfast biscuit topped with two scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese, plus a side of bacon, obvi.

019

And some fruit!

018

SO delicious. I never get anything else when I go to Foster’s for brunch because this is just so good!

Although Libby’s meal looked amazing — she had the omelette special of the day, which was topped with pesto and stuffed with spinach and ricotta cheese. YUM!

015

The rest of yesterday afternoon was spent relaxing at the UNC pool with my friend Jill. For 3 hours, we gossiped, got some sunshine, and swam laps. Perfection.

003

The fun continued last night with a grad school friend’s BBQ followed by outdoor drinks in Carrboro. I love that we were able to be outside this weekend without drowning in puddles of our own sweat!

I’m off to enjoy the rest of this beautiful Sunday — and to study a bit since we have our final exam tomorrow morning for our summer class. Boo! Have a good one 🙂

Are you a hot weather runner or a cold weather runner? I love warm weather for most other fitness activities, but I’d rather run in a snowstorm than in 90 degree heat and humidity, any day!

Bummer about the tri! But you workouts weren't for nothing. Love foster's market! Wish we had something like it. Sounds like a nice weekend at home!

Have you looked at finding a trithalon in Wilmington? A cousin did one here (I really want to say October-ish but I could be wrong). And I completely agree with you on the weather! I was hosting a charity bachelor auction Friday night ($6,000 raised to fight ALS and counting), and the cooler weather was definitely a welcome relief, especially after the 100+ degrees days last week! And if you do end up finding a tri in Wilmington, I can suggest some phenomenal restaurants if you make a weekend out of it!

Bummer about the tri cancel. One of my favorite 5ks was canceled last year for the same reason. I see it's back on for this year, hopefully it makes it. I am definitely a cold weather runner. I love getting sweaty, but I hate being hot and sweaty.

Aw! That is such a bummer that they canceled it a week before. I would be so sad :( I think there's a lot of other sprint triathlons in the area...Ramblin Rose seems like a good one...but it's women only I think. Also, I guess I'm more of a summer runner even though I run about the same amount in the winter. I love waking up early and it being light out and cool. The winters are so dark in the morning, but at least you could sleep in and run after work!

I love being outside in the heat, but for running I don't like it too hot, I like to run in the mornings in the summer before the sun is out, but the air is still warm.

That's too bad about the triathlon. Oh well, tomorrow is another day.It has been beautiful here in the outer suburbs of Atlanta too. It has been in the high 70's to low 80's all weekend and we have been in our pool just about the entire time. We stick close to home since my bad fall. I still have 2 black and green and yellow eyes.Boo Getting better though. It takes more than a fall to keep this ole gal down.

So sorry to hear about the tri, what a bummer! Did they say why it was cancelled?? Your egg dishes look scrumptious as does the bacon mm mm! It's been entirely too long since I've had a homemade bacon egg and cheese sammy! I can't wait to go to the beach in my new hometown of newburyport MA so I can soak up some sunshine! :) I am definitely a warm weather runner although I do prefer to run in the morning because it can be ridiculous steamy by mid day!

Cancelled? Boooo!!! I'm so bummed for you! :-( And I was so excited to see photos of you in your pretty tri-suit! (fun, fit and fashionable!) As for running in the heat? I live in Tampa, the heat and humidity is nauseating! But, if it doesn't kill you, it will only make you stronger, HOOAH!!! ;-) Keep up with your awesome workout!

Hey Anne, how do you run with the camelback and not have it drive you crazy? I did 9 miles yesterday that had to be in the middle of the day (horrible heat and I knew I'd need water!), and i got my neck rubbed raw. The stupid thing kept bouncing all over the place too. Does yours have a waist strap?

Mine really doesn't move much! I have the 1.5 liter hydrobak so it's really small and high up on my shoulders. What kind do you have? Maybe just wear a t-shirt instead of a sleeveless shirt if it's rubbing and pull the straps in so it's tighter? Mine doesn't have a waist strap.

Hi Anne, My sister signed up for her first tri this year and it was cancelled the day before:(. I was planning on going to cheer her on...so, instead, I helped her do her own tri at a local park. I actually walked along the shoreline while she swam with my garmin - very funny and not too precise. Then I ran with her at the end - we had a great time. Even though it wasn't official, it left her feeling very satisfied after feeling extremely disappointed at the cancellation. So, I think you should do it anyway and have the fam crew/help out. Love your site - especially your recipes = yummers! Dana
