OutRun Adventure 3.0 Recap

Hello, hello! Matt and I stayed in DC again this past weekend (crazy, I know!) and we were lucky enough to have another gorgeous couple days of weather. We made sure to take full advantage by doing errands via BikeShare, hanging out by our apartment pool (so awesome), having a BBQ with friends on Friday night and an outdoor sushi dinner with another friend on Saturday night, and on Saturday morning, Matt and I spent a few hours kayaking, biking, and running with the Roam Fitness OutRun Adventure crew!

OutRun Adventure is a special few times a year version of Roam’s OutRun (boot camp + run club combined) program. I was out of town for the first two Adventures over the past year so I was really excited to be able to join for this one! Each Adventure is different and you sign up either by yourself, in a pair, or in a group of 4. Matt and I were joined by my blogger buddy Chelsea and her boyfriend Fabio! Our team name was “Row-Bike-Run-Blog.” 🙂

The adventure was $50 per person (our team received 25% off in exchange for blogging about our experience) and included the kayak rental, a cool t-shirt, and some food afterwards, plus of course being led in the whole adventure. The event was “BYOB” – Bring Your Own Bike! 😉

We all met up at Key Bridge Boathouse (Matt and I biked there, since we needed our bikes anyway) and pushed off at 9 a.m. with the first portion of the adventure: kayaking!

It was the most beautiful morning – we were so excited to be out on the water.

We kayaked out leisurely to an area of rocks, then did some fun races to get back to the boathouse. Matt and I won the first race! I give him most of the credit… 😉

We spent about 45 minutes out on the water and then regrouped (and had a snack) before biking to Roosevelt Island for the next portion of the adventure. One thing I liked a lot about this was that with the exception of the short kayak sprints, it wasn’t a race at all – everyone took their time biking and we regrouped once we got anywhere. Nice and low pressure!

We left our bikes and helmets locked up at the base of the bridge to Roosevelt Island, then set off on foot for a little running and boot camping.

It was muddy out there!

But gorgeous – I love running on Roosevelt Island.

After doing a trail run around the island (~1.5 miles?), we stopped in the center of the island for some boot camp type moves.

Here’s what a photo of two people awkwardly halfway into a jumping jack looks like, in case you were wondering:

Lol.

From there, we ran back out and hopped on our bikes again. Our next destination was Gravelly Point, a few miles down the Mt. Vernon Trail. Weeeee!

From there it was back a little ways and up over the 14th Street Bridge into DC!

I couldn’t get over the amazing weather. We really lucked out!

From there, we biked on back to Key Bridge Boathouse. We got back around noon and dived headfirst into some food (Matt and I had some granola I brought with me along the way, but we were still super hungry!). I didn’t get a picture but they had some rolls, deli meat, lettuce, cheese, etc. for us to throw together sandwiches, and some really fresh delicious strawberries, too. There was also some beer, which the boys were all over. 🙂

Whew – we made it! I hadn’t seen Chelsea in way too long and loved getting some time with her – we need to be better about making run dates more often, especially since we live so close!

What a FUN way to spend a morning! I would definitely sign up for another OutRun Adventure and look forward to seeing what they come up with for next time. The only thing I would have liked more is if they made the after party more of a party – the leaders ate pretty quickly and had to leave, which I get, but it would have been fun to have everyone hanging out and relaxing for awhile before peacing out. I also would have loved if they introduced everyone at the start – all of us ended up chatting once we were out on the adventure, but it still would have been nice to know who our fellow adventurers were up front/to make it more of an all-inclusive group thing. 🙂 All in all though, a total blast, and spending 3 hours playing outside is certainly my favorite way to spend a beautiful Saturday morning. Even though we were working out for 3 hours, it didn’t feel too hard since we weren’t going crazy on pace/speed – like I said, the bike riding was really low key and there were a lot of stops, which was good, so no one ever got left behind!

Time to get back to work – how was your weekend? Any fun fitness adventures to report? I hope the weather was lovely for all of you, too!

Roam Fitness sells them! I bought it after one of the free Saturday OutRuns a few weeks ago to help support the cause. :) I think they were $25 and I'm pretty sure they are only sold in person.

This sounds awesome, I wish Philly had something like this, I would be all about it. I did go for a bike ride and short run Saturday morning before heading the beach so I did get to spend most of my day outside enjoying the beautiful weather!

That looks like SO MUCH FUN! WOW! DC is just the coolest! I would love to do something like that when I am "retired" as an elite...I am too scared to do anything like that right now! Love seeing your happy smiles :)

Omg that jumping jacks pic...I am literally LOLing. I had so much fun with you guys this weekend!! I agree with your suggestions- the after party felt pretty rushed and it would have been better to get introduced to everyone at the beginning. Let's definitely get together soon for some runs and yoga!

I LOVE those outdoor programs you do! I'm so jealous haha Maybe one day someone will have them in my area in NJ. My husband and some friends did a Spartan Race this weekend and definitely took advantage of the great weather we had in NY/NJ! Now my husband wants to go for the Spartan Trifecta and get all three medals.

That looks like a lot of fun! I've seen some urban style races that are similar that I think would just be a cool change of pace from "normal" events.
