H friends!

Before I get in to recent running adventures, I wanted to announce that the Winter Shape Up, which I co-host each January with Gina from The Fitnessista, is launching on Monday! It’s a free 4 weeks of workouts (from Gina – she’s a trainer) and meal plans (from me) to inspire you to kick off you new year on a healthy note. You guys know I’m not about anything extreme – this is just a fun way to encourage each other to stay active and eat healthy, in a sustainable way. She wrote a post on setting it up for shape up success – and I started the new Winter Shape Up Facebook support group if you’d like to get in there early!

You don’t need to do anything to sign up – just check our blogs on Monday for the details! Isn’t the logo fun? 🙂

Anyway! Since Matt and I were both working from home yesterday, we treated ourselves to a long lunch break. First up: a 3-ish mile jog around some hilly neighborhoods.

We ended our run at our lunch spot of choice, Cassatt’s Kiwi Cafe. We love this place. I usually come here for brunch, but decided to mix it up and do lunch. A BLT sandwich plus a side salad! The BLT had guac on it – so good.

I know I’m a dietitian and all, but BLTs are probably the greatest sandwich of all time. Just sayin’. My grandmother makes the best ones. 🙂

This morning’s adventure was more running – this time with the coached running group that I’m checking out through Potomac River Running. They let you do a trial week (they meet Tues/Thurs at 6:30 a.m.) before committing, so I checked them out for the first time this morning. It was pitch black when we met up at the track, but by the time we were done the sunrise was beautiful!

This morning’s workout was 1,000’s – one lap around the track is 400m, so a 1,000 was 2 and a half laps. We were instructed to push ourselves, but not go all out, since that was obviously too long a distance for sprinting. In between each 1,000, we did a half lap of jogging to recover.

It was a great workout! The coaches were really nice and it was awesome to have someone timing you as you did each lap – so motivating. There were probably about 15 people out this morning, and some of them were super fast, but I found a couple guys who were about my pace and we challenged each other.

Felt good to do a speedier run! My watch doesn’t include the warm up and cool down jogs I did at the start and end of the workout, so I probably covered about 5 miles total.

Tuesdays are usually their straight up track workout day, and Thursdays are reserved for tempo runs, hill repeats, and things like that. I’m going to go back on Thursday to see how that is, too, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to sign up!

Have a good one, my friends!

Do you have a running coach or group? How do you like it?

Who’s in for the Winter Shape Up?! 🙂

I have never had a running coach, but followed an online training plan that I modified some for last year's half marathon that I ran. I usually run races for fun, but if I was seriously looking in improve time or qualify then I may consider a coach.

Oh my goodness I love Cassatt's sooooo much! The chicken panini with brie and mango chutney is absolutely delicious! Seemed like a weird combination at first but it's my favorite :)

The Winter Shape is always fun to follow along with! It'll be great to see what you have in store this year. I have never had a running group, but it sounds like it would be a really great way for extra motivation.

Well done on the track workout, Anne. It takes a fair amount of determination to get out there early in the morning and do speed work. But there is no substitute for it! I'm impressed!

Can't wait to start the Winter Shape Up! I did half of it last year, but had to drop out because I was having some pregnancy complications (and also awful morning sickness, ugh). This year, I'll have a tiny spectator observing my efforts!

I love BLTs. There is nothing better than a BLT when you have fresh lettuce, tomato and homemade bread from the farmer's market. I think my husband and I had them every other day for 2 weeks straight when we moved to Tennessee this past summer. I can't wait until the farmer market opens in our town again. We live 5 miles from one. I love it!!!!!!

Yes! I took New York Road Runners classes (the folks who organize most races in NYC, including the marathon) and it made me a much faster runner. It's a ton of fun. More info here: http://cuckoolemon.com/2014/12/01/nyrr-classes/

So glad you and Matt were able to work from home today! My man stayed home from his law office and we worked on separate things, but together, in our own space. It's nice to be able to spend extra time with our loved ones!

I have been a member of two running clubs (in different cities). There are no bounds to my love for both groups. It is invaluable to have built in running buddies and access to the expertise of the seasoned runners / coaches.

I don't have a running group, but I sometimes wish I did especially for speed work motivation and long run company. I'd kind of like to join the shapeup. How do you do it?
