Running Happy & Edge Yoga in Arlington

Hello and happy Friday!

It’s a warm and sunny one here in the DC area, and I started it off with an early morning run with my girl Karen!

IMG_3122

Karen was out of town for awhile and before that, I was out of town, so we hadn’t run together in a couple weeks! Oh, the horror. I missed her so! 🙂

IMG_3128

Since it was a pretty morning, we decided to run down along the water and around Roosevelt Island. It’s always hard to believe something so pretty and wooded is literally right by the city. Karen kept saying she felt like she was at summer camp or something!

Oh hi, Georgetown! You always remind me of the Prague castle from this angle. 🙂

IMG_3129

My legs were feeling a little tired, but with great company and views like that it was definitely a “run happy” sort of morning. I even had my new Run Happy shirt on to prove it!

IMG_3124

Brooks sent me the shirt and the fun shorts – the Inifiniti Short II – to celebrate spring as part of my continued Brooks Run Happy Ambassadorship. I loved them both! The shirt is a nice lightweight wicking material and I of course love that it says run happy – my personal tagline that I totally stole from Brooks a few years ago, before I was even working with them.

As for the shorts, I was a huge fan as well! I LOVE the color – so fun and bright. The yellow highlights match my shoelaces! 🙂

IMG_3126

And of course more importantly, they didn’t ride up or down while I was running. They are also extremely lightweight – you’ll be seeing a lot of these this summer!

IMG_3123

Best of all, they have not one, not two, but THREE pockets. One pocket inside the front waistband for keys, which worked perfectly, and two pockets on the outside – one on each side – that are the perfect size for a gel. That’s going to be so helpful come marathon training in a couple months!

IMG_3120

Speaking of marathon training, Karen and I had fun chatting about it during our run! We’re going to research some training plans and put something together soon, aiming for the beginning of our official marathon training to be in July. Eeee! So excited/nervous!

I also  finally got around to updating my Garmin watch screen so that it shows the average pace for the whole run on the bottom left instead of calories, which I honestly never even looked at anyway. The “pace” on the top right shows the pace you’re actually going that instant while you’re running – super helpful if you’re trying to stick with something specific. 5 hilly miles at an 8:54 min/mile average pace – check!

In other workout news, I’d like to share one of Arlington, Virginia’s best kept secrets: Edge Yoga studio in Courthouse.

edge yoga arlington

Yes, you read that right – it’s in the same building as a bartending school. I first started going to this yoga studio last fall and I’ve been loving it ever since, going once every couple weeks or so for Mark (the owner)’s awesome and challenging power yoga classes. Gena and I have gone there together quite a bit and I’ve brought a few other friends with me as well – Mark was joking with me last night that he must be scaring my friends off with his hard classes because I keep coming with different people! In keeping with the trend, last night I brought fellow fitness blogger Joelle with me for Mark’s 6 p.m. class.

Joelle and I live right nearby each other and have been trying to meet up for MONTHS – seriously since last fall at least. Ridiculous. We finally got our acts (and our schedules) together this week, and she’d never been to Edge before so I was excited to introduce yet another person to it!

As always, it was a great and challenging class. Mark’s classes are very athletic in style, big on twists/binds, and usually end with a hard ab workout, so you’ll leave nice and sweaty. Edge is a tiny studio – literally one room – but I like the no frills, non pretentious approach to yoga. And, you know, having the option to take shots at the bartending school across the hallway right after class. (Just kidding… 🙂 )

And now, it’s time to get back to work so I can close my computer in a couple hours and enjoy the weekend! I have a fun one ahead – my friend Ben is getting married and my high school BFF Jenny (his older sister) is in town – yay for reunions!

Anyone else get in any great workouts this week? And if you’re in the DC area – what’s your favorite local yoga studio?

I loved this post since I am moving to Arlington to start law school at the beginning of August! I am happy to see there are beautiful running trails as that's one of the things I'm fearful I will most most moving from the bay area in California. Thanks for the tips! What marathon are you training for? As soon as I arrive I start training for MCM, which I was super excited about as it starts <2 miles from my future home!

I've been looking for a non-intimidating yoga studio to go to! I should def try Edge. The ones in the Dupont Circle area are VERY intimidating.

Too funny, I walk by that bartending school all the time and just this weekend noticed that there was a yoga studio there too. I'll have to try it out sometime!!
