Happy Friday!

I had the lunch of champions today at work — SARDINES!!!

003

Don’t worry, I didn’t eat them straight from the can. 😉

I LOVE sardines. Always have, since I was little. I know lots of people are scared of them, though. Don’t be scared! They are delicious, and very healthy! Lots of omega fatty acids in these bad boys 😉

006

Sorry. I should have warned you before putting up that picture 😉 Yes, they might look a little scary, but seriously, sardines are awesome and you should try them. Cheap, too! This can was only like $1.50!

For lunch, I mashed the sardines in a bowl with a spoonful of nonfat plain yogurt and a few squirts of dijon mustard.

008

Then I spread the mixture on an Ezekiel tortilla and topped it with some broccoli slaw — love this stuff on sandwiches. Adds such a nice crunch!

Then I topped it all off with some spinach!

013

Yum, yum, yum.

I also brought along some plain Greek yogurt and a baggie of frozen cherries, which I heated at work and put in the yogurt. DIVINE! I also brought my new favorite snack — Cinnamon Raisin Almond Balls! 🙂

I’m heading out to the Verizon store now to check out phones — I reaaaaally want a phone with internet/email capabilities (and Twitter… not gonna lie). We’ll see… I’ve had my phone for like 4 years now and it’s a dinosaur!

Check back tomorrow for a recap of the D.C. blogger lunch, and Sunday for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler race recap! Gah! 🙂 I’m excited.

…

Some questions for you guys:

  • Have you ever tried sardines? Did you like them?
  • Do you have a phone with internet and if so, is it worth it?

Hey Anne!! That sardine recipe looks so yummy! I know this sounds gross but I love sardines on a pepperoni and mushroom pizza :) YUM!! Quick question. I read on another blog about a National Bake sale for childhood hunger or something like that...is there one happening in our area anytime soon? If so, please let me know, i'd love to contribute! -C.

Hey! I think you're talking about the Share Our Strength "Taste of the Nation" events? Share Our Strength is an organization that works towards ending childhood hunger :) Here's a link to the DC Taste of the Nation event, but I think it's sold out :( http://strength.org/washington/. But you can still donate on their website to the general cause! I used to organize bake sales at my old office with the proceeds to benefit this cause. It's awesome!

Haha, I just got back from the Verizon store! My old phone went berserk on me. I got the new Cosmos phone that just came out a few weeks ago. It has internet capabilities, but I don't pay for them...not yet, at least. It seems pretty cool. I'm excited for the Cherry Blossom 10-miler! I'm pretty sure I'll see you at lunch tomorrow. I'm still figuring out a possible schedule conflict, but that restaurant looks amazing. :)

I am an ENORMOUS sardine fan!!!!!!!!!!! I have them for lunch at least once a week. I love your idea of mashing them with yogurt and a bit of mustard. I tend to douse them in Frank's Red Hot and eat them with a few crackers. So yummy. I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear that others out there are sardine fans. I thought I was alone in my love for them. Thank you!

I haven't had sardines in years, but I love anchovies, so I'd probably love sardines. That's my guess at least. I absolutely can not even remember what my life was like pre-iPhone. I've had mine for a year and a half and it has been so amazingly valuable! Before my iPhone I just had a razor and thought I didn't need anything beside minutes and text. Now with job I have now, I'm constantly traveling, staying in hotels, hanging out in convention centers, lost in cities I've never been too, flight delays, flight cancelations - the phone is a lifesaver! Although I do find it a distraction at times...

I have tried sardines! They are huge here in Portugal. In June there's a huge celebration in the streets of Lisbon called Santos Populares (Popular Saints? ahah Sounds better in portuguese) and there are people selling sardines and all kinds of delicious foods all over Lisbon. There's this delicious smell in the air and everybody has some fun! :) My phone does have internet but it's an older phone and not very practical for internet usage. I would like to have a blackberry or an iphone but I can't really afford either of those!

I never would have thought to make sardines like that. How neat! I have an iPhone, and my life has literally changed since I bought it. I'm able to be more mobile with work. I've gotten my family out of a snowstorm with it. Although I am addicted to it, I wouldn't go back to a regular phone ever.

vegetarian so nope no sardines for me. I got an iPhone last year after telling my husband forever that I wouldn't use half the features and am promptly eating my words. I LOVE my iPhone. Like others have said it really does change your life. Email, internet, facebook, twitter, iPod, and great GPS aps for running (love motion-x GPS cos you can email the course to yourself and others, and it links to a google map where you can "see" your run). Love my iPhone! Do it!

I have not tried sardines - I think I could try them IN something - just not out of the can like that. I just got a crackberry - I don't use the internet a lot but I do love the ability to tweet and stalk facebook...

Hi Anne! I have never commented on your blog before, but have been reading for a while now! And sardines are yummy! I <3 them! As for the phone with internet....it is very handy...almost too handy. Like someone says "I don't know what the meaning of that word is." I reply "One sec. Lemme look it up." Blam! Word definition found right there on my phone at dinner.

I have had sardines, but in the spaghetti sauce that my grandmother and mother make. It gives it a slightly salty flavor, but I've never had them as a star ingredient. I also have Verizon and have Blackberry which I love. It has the internet/email and Twitter which is just nice when I know there are days I'm always from a computer for hours. I wish Verizon was in line with the iPhone because I've heard great things, but I love Verizon's coverage too much to switch.

Okay...everyone and their mom is going to tell you to go with the iPhone. Me, on the other hand? BlackBerry all the way!!! I absolutely LOVE my BB - especially the internet access. I'm always on the internet and using UberTwitter (the BB Twitter application). For me, I just don't like touch screen. I've played around with my dad's and ex-boyfriend's iPhones A LOT...and even after getting used to the touch screen, I just didn't like it! BlackBerry just suits my personality better, as lame as that sounds. It's more to-the-point, you know? There's no denying that iPhone has more capabilities, but I realized that I wouldn't use 90% of them anyway. BlackBerry has exactly what I need, and I clearly am having a love affair with mine :P

I've never tried sardines! And I love my Blackberry- it probably doesn't have as many apps as iPhone but I like using Verizon so much, the internet is really reliable. At first I didn't know if I'd use the internet but it comes in handy ALL the time. Ohh and one of my favorite desserts is to put some still-frozen frozen cherries in a bowl and top it with yogurt. The yogurt freezes a little and with a little chocolate- mmm!

Sardines are the best; however, real sardine lovers eat them straight from the can, just with crackers! Good luck in the race ---

My dad and I used to eat sardines ALL of the time when I was younger...mostly just to gross out my mom. ;-) BUT I was in Whole Foods today and I was looking at them debating on whether or not I should buy them for ol' times sake. I havn't had them for years so I don't know if I still like them or not. But I'm taking me coming across this post as a sign and I am bringing sardines back into my life ASAP haha.
