Weekend Adventures

Hey friends! Matt and I stuck around town this weekend and it was nice to have a weekend at home! On Friday night, we stayed in and made a Blue Apron and watched some of the new season of House of Cards (so good/intense – anyone else a fan?). On Saturday morning, I had a nice relaxing morning reading the paper and enjoying some avocado toast.

Have you guys had avocado toast before? You just mash about half a ripe avocado on a piece of toast, and top it with seasonings of your choice – I did salt and pepper and then threw some chia seeds on there, too! So good and satisfying.

A little while later, I headed over to Union Market to meet up with my friend Chelsea for a cool fitness adventure: a pop up SoulCycle class! SoulCycle and Target have been partnering to bring free community pop up SoulCycle classes around the country and DC’s was this past weekend.

The class was held at Dock 5 right next to Union Market. I’ve been wanting to try a SoulCycle class for awhile now so this was a good opportunity to give it a shot without the hefty price tag! It was fun to mix it up but the class wasn’t my favorite – the instructor could have been more engaging/upbeat and I don’t like techno music, so that didn’t help. You never regret a workout though and it was fun to hang with Chelsea and try something new. 🙂 A big thank you to the event’s PR team for gifting us with the outfits we’re wearing, too – I always love Champion by Target gear and this was no exception. Affordable and cute! (Here are the tights I’m wearing.)

Chelsea and I grabbed lattes from Peregrine Espresso at Union Market and strolled around a bit afterwards – Union Market is always so fun to explore! So many cool products and local vendors.

As for the rest of the day, the sports adventures continued! When I came home I got a text from Matt that he was off kicking around the soccer ball nearby with his friend Shane, but that they wanted to play tennis after and I should come join them. Don’t have to ask me twice! I had a snack and headed right back out the door.

The three of us had a blast playing tennis – we alternated who was facing off solo against the other two, which was fun. You had to do some SERIOUS running if you were on the side by yourself!

After about an hour and a half of tennis we were all starving and walked to nearby Rustico for a late lunch. I ordered two small appetizer size salads (one of which was shared with Matt) and also enjoyed two slices of their pizza. Perfect combo! The veggie volume satisfied me and the pizza was of course delicious. 🙂 The kale and sweet potato salad was especially good – great combination of textures!

As for the rest of Saturday, we had a fun dinner out! I didn’t snag any photos but Matt and I had a great meal at District Commons in Foggy Bottom with a couple friends. After dinner, Matt headed out on the town and I happily came home and read my book in bed. 🙂 (I’m reading The Boys in the Boat right now and so far it’s great – so engaging and well written.) I’ve officially reached the age where I don’t feel guilty about wanting to come home and read vs. go out to the bars. Plus, I had a fun Sunday morning adventure planned that I wanted to be able to enjoy – a run date with my college friend Sarah!

It was a gray morning but nice temperature for running, and we had a great time chatting away and catching up. We ran on my old friend the C&O Canal and did a simple out and back. Out and backs are always nice for long runs because you can mentally say “I just have to run 4 miles, then we turn around” vs. “I’m doing an 8 mile loop”. You know?

The miles flew by since we were distracted by talking the whole time and we finished feeling great. Nothing like a run with a good friend. 🙂 Kathleen, we missed you!

8 miles was perfect for both of us because I am tapering for the DC Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon this coming weekend and Sarah is ramping up in preparation for the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler in a few weeks. Sweet!

After our run, I came home, cleaned up, and made a brunch feast with Matt. I cooked the eggs while he plated the veggies/toast – pretty, right? He has such a good eye for presentation!

The eggs were atop a massive mound of arugula plus sliced toast, tomatoes, and avocado. So good! Salt and pepper (and cholula chili garlic hot sauce) to taste.

The rest of yesterday was spent catching up on things around the house and watching a little more House of Cards. 🙂 The weekend was capped off last night with a tasty dinner at Water and Wall with my mom!

I’m working from home today because I have plans to take a nice walking break a little later with a friend nearby. Should be a beautiful day – looking forward to the fresh air already!

How was your weekend? Any great fitness adventures or meals to report?

So happy you're reading that book! As a nine-year enthusiast of rowing (coxing!) I'm so glad it appeals to non-rowers.

Love House of Cards! We binge-watched like 8 episodes over the course of the weekend...so good! My husband who works for the Senate says that he doesn't like it because its "not realistic" which I reminded him is a very good thing :-) We live not far from Union Market but still have not ventured over there. That espresso looks amazing and is the perfect motivation to get over there ASAP!

I also went to the Soul Cycle Target pop up (on Friday night.) The instructor told me that I couldn't lift the weight I requested (despite that's what I always use in their classes and did so successfully that night,) so I have to agree that it wasn't my best Soul Cycle experience either! I did order a pair of Champion tights this weekend - love all the black and white options :)

Wow, that's lame on the instructor's part to assume like that! I was surprised the pop up wasn't great -- I feel like if you're doing pop ups to try to draw in new customers, you should be wowing them, right?! The Target gear was so cute though -- and so affordable!
