Sand Volleyball for the win!

Good afternoon, friends!

Another Biochem exam has come and gone… even though I felt like I was really prepared for this one, I still don’t think I did all that great on the test. Sigh. Oh well, it’s over, right?! :)

Minus studying flash cards, I had a fantastic rest of my weekend and I hope you all did, too! The weather was beautiful yesterday and Matt and I enjoyed lunch on our patio:

001

… or at least we tried to and were enjoying a lovely lunch al fresco when all of a sudden a bunch of carpenter bees showed up to join us! They’ve been around on and off for the past week, grrr. I was hoping they had left after the cold weather last week but no dice! It’s funny because Matt is not scared of any bugs or anything in life really except bees. He’s seriously TERRIFIED of them, and he jumped about a mile when one flew by his head! And inside we went ;) Any tips on how to get rid of carpenter bees?!

Anyway! Lunch was still delish :) I whipped up big salads topped with chickpeas, kidney beans, chopped basil (adds SO much awesomeness to a salad!), tomato, and green pepper. Topped with a homemade vinaigrette of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, fresh lemon juice, dijon mustard, and sea salt and cracked pepper!

006

Yum!

005

We also enjoyed some communal grapes:

004

And crackers with a Laughing Cow cheese:

003

After lunch we headed out on a bike ride with our friend Tim! Sadly his wife Lindsey couldn’t join us — Tim and Lindsey are both doing their medical residency right now and she was stuck on the night shift all weekend. Boo!

Matt and I ready to rock:

024

Aren’t those bright yellow flowers beautiful?!

023

We weren’t sure what type of flowers they were — any thoughts? I remember rapeseed looking like that in Europe but wasn’t sure if that’s what it was or not!

Anyway! We had a great ride all through farm country. So beautiful out there!

029 026

We ended up covering about 16 miles in the beautiful sunshine. Here are Matt and Tim near the end of the ride:

027

After the bike ride (and ice cream at Maple View Farm, obviously), I raced home, changed out of my sneakers and biking shorts, and headed out again for… INTRAMURAL SAND VOLLEYBALL!!!!

030

Haha oh yes, sand volleyball! We had to replace the epic Walleyball with something, right?! :)

It was awesome. I love intramural sports :)

031

My team obviously got completely destroyed, but we have high hopes for next weekend ;) We did get a little better by the end of the game, ha!

035

Win or lose, it was just awesome being outside in the beautiful weather playing with friends. That’s my favorite way to spend a day!

Speaking of playing with friends — I’m off to play tennis with my friend Lindsey (Tim’s wife)! It’s like 85 degrees here today — what the heck?! I’ll take it.

Have a great night, friends!

I am so with you re: basil on salads. Baller.

I admire you so much for signing up for intramural sports. Just the thought of team sports gives me horrible gym class flashbacks…eeek! :D

  2. 2

That bike ride looks like so much fun! I love bike rides… especially when the scenery is vineyards and beaches :) Hope the biochem exam went well… I am so thankful that I am DONE with school.

  3. 3

Enjoy that 85 degree weather! Sounds like you’re making the most of it by playing tennis! :)

    Kim Oldenburgh says:

The yellow flower looks like mustard. Can’t be sure, though! Totally envy your great weather, it’s snowing here again. I’m in Maine.

  5. 5

Aw man! I LOVED sand volleyball. Reminds me of college so hard.

  6. 6

Hello beautiful day! 85 that is awesome :)

  7. 7

And strangely I want to watch Top Gun now.

  8. 8

Ahhh I’m terrified of bees as well! Tell Matt he is not alone!!!!

  9. 9

Can I just say that I’m super jealous of the weather you’re having? I’m still waiting for the snow to melt away and it to get consistently over 0C (32F). Any day now….

  10. 10

ohh I miss biking on the east coast (I grew up in Bethesda, MD). It looks like such a nice ride in beautiful weather! And a wonderful salad to boot! :)

  11. 11

I think you’re right on with the idea that those flowers are rapeseed, and one of the commenters (Kim) says that it’s mustard… they’re all from the same family more or less. Here in Canada we call the stuff canola, I think.

  12. 12

I love playing volleyball! Playing in the sand must we AWESOME! :-D

  13. 13

This spring in NC is going so well for you! I can’t wait to see what fun summer brings. :)

  14. 14

You are QUITE the athlete today!!! Biking, volleyball, and tennis all in one day? Man oh man!

  15. 16

Sorry that your BioChem test was difficult, but at least it’s over! And maybe the curve may come in handy?
(my miserable Professor didn’t “believe” in curves!!!!)

Don’t worry, BioChem isn’t for everyone, Anne.
But I’m really proud of your great efforts!

  16. 18

Yay for all of those things (excpet bees, boo, I’m with Matt on this one!) especially sand volleyball! You know we have a court at work, right? It’s huuuge! I don’t play, but I am the Engert Lab’s head cheerleader ;)

  17. 22

I LOVE this weather, it’s fantastic and finally feels like spring!! I’m with Matt, I hate bees – carpenter bees are awful, they’re so big and nasty looking (I hear they don’t sting, but that doesn’t make them any less scary) – I had never heard of them or seen one until I moved to east Tennessee, apparently they’re common in the South! The only thing I know to do is to plug the holes they drill in the wood (they used to invade the overhang of my apartment roof) because that’s where they live and multiply. But I never wanted to get close enough to do that! LOL

  18. 23

If you were still in DC, I’d totally recommend the George Washington Adult Camp, taught by the women’s team and their coach. They kick your ass for a week, but you get noticeably better by the end. TOTALLY worth it!

      For volleyball??

      • 25

Yep! I have done it a few times back on my volleyball days. I haven’t played now in a year — marathon training and wedding took all my time and now moving to Manila doesn’t help — but used to play 5 times a week in either the sand courts in Crystal City during the summer, or volleyball indoor teams at Fairfax Sportsplex and the Skyline Sport & Health during the winter. (And in an USAV team as well occasionally.)

  19. 27

What a great day — a bike ride, sand volleyball, and tennis, plus a nice salad al fresco! I’m envious! Very nice —

(You need to recruit from height/power for your volleyball team…)

  20. 28

I love volleyball! That sounds like so much fun! Now I want to join a league :)

  21. 29

    That salad looks sooo good!!!

  22. 30

    I LOVE Volleyball! :)

  23. 31

Good morning Anne. We just emerged from our safe room in the basement. The whole family slept in it last night. Tornadoes all around us. It was scary. Looks like you had a fannetastic day. We had carpenter bees years ago and if my memory serves me, we had to get an exterminator. They bore into the ground and they have to find the mound in order to get rid of them. They can be very destructive just like termites can be destructive. Tell your manager that you need them to call an exterminator because store bought sprays are not going to do the trick.
The sand volley ball looks like so much fun.

  24. 33

So jealous of your nice weather! I’m dying to get out on my bike but it’s been way too cold lately!

  25. 34

Love the volleyball action shots! Thanks for taking pics!

  26. 36

Soo funn! I would love to play in the sand. Bahhaha I am basically a child.

  27. 37

what a fun AND active day!
