Random vs. Whole Running Miles

Hi friends! Popping in for some Wednesday randomness for you. First, we are still enjoying this crockpot chicken and veggie stew – recipe is coming Friday, get pumped. I had some more for lunch yesterday, this time with some arugula on top!

Second, The Great Homemade Kombucha Experiment of 2016/2017 is still going strong! I mentioned previously Matt is trying his hand at homemade kombucha. Attempt #1 with a dry starter scoby was a fail, but attempt #2 with a scoby pilfered from a jar of purchased kombucha appears to be working!

Matt created this high tech contraption to keep the kombucha warm enough (our house is usually 68-70 degrees and we’ve read that’s a bit chilly for the scoby to keep growing) using a box and our heating vent with a thermometer in the jar to make sure it doesn’t get too hot. Quite creative! 🙂

In other news, Matt and I went for a nice jog on Monday afternoon. He had the day off, I was working from home but not too hard. 🙂 We kept it nice and casual on pace and did a loop around our hilly neighborhood.

The final distance – 2.76 – made me laugh because some of you commented on my weekend adventures post about how seeing 6.45 as the final distance on my watch made you want to run the additional 0.05 miles for me to make it 6.5!

So – I thought this would be a fun debate for the blog. 🙂 If you’re a runner (or walker, or biker, or anything that tracks mileage) – do you make sure you finish on a rounded off/whole/half mile, or are random numbers fine? I’m split on the issue – if it’s over .85, I want to finish out the mile. But any less than that and I don’t care what the number is. I think I’m Type B+, ha!

Have a great day guys! I’m teaching English this morning and then I’ll be working the rest of the day downtown. Let’s all make it a good one, shall we? 🙂

My coach has me run for time, not distance. 45 minutes goes by, and I stop. It taught me to quit looking at how far I have gone. It's weird because I am very Type A, but I've been doing that all year, so I got over it pretty quick! I've become faster because of that! It's awesome.

Fair enough! Would you be cool with 44 minutes and 34 seconds? ;)

Literally I've always wanted to round it off and get to that even number of .5 or .0 but the other day I came up to my house and decided I didn't care at all - so I think I'm transitioning from a type A to a Type B runner? Ha ha

As long as I run my minimum number of miles for a given workout, I'm totally okay with ending on odd distances. I'm anal but never been *that* anal. :-)

I have made a couple batches of kombucha (I am on round 5) and just like you, I put mine close-ish to our furnace because we have a cold house. For my first batch I was convinced I had mold, but it was actually just strings of yeast that developed. I have made both cranberry and ginger - so good!

I definitely run for time! I will stop on the mile or 1/2 mile. Even when I do it by "time" (say I only have 30 minutes), I will speed up/slow down towards the end to ensure an whole distance number! ha.

My running friends and I were having this conversation the other day! We were all in agreement that even if we are more than .5, but less than the next full mile, then we will keep running till we reach that mile marker. There's just something about having your watch be an odd number that motivates you to keep going a bit longer/

If I'm actually running and tracking, it has to end on a logical number: .50, .00, 3.1, or 6.2. I've never even really thought about it; I just naturally keep going until it's at a rounded number. If I'm just walking my dogs with the Walk for a Dog app or doing an easy run/walk with a friend, then I can stop whenever.

I generally have to round it out at whatever quarter mile I'm closest to. It's okay if I'm slightly over (only over!) if I'm rounding out the TIME to the minute. haha

I am pretty guilty of having to run around the block a few times to finish out the mile. Especially for long runs!! I'm getting a little better about the random mid week runs, but it still drives me slightly nuts. And the weekly milage needs to end on a .5 or 0. Definitely type A over here!

Hilarious! I absolutely ALWAYS have to have complete miles...unless it's a 5k or 10k distance, then 3.1 or 6.22 is totally fine.

  • Amanda January 18, 2017 · 3:16PM:
Oh, I'm def Type A allllll the way! I MUST end on a .5 or whole mile. Anything else makes me crazy! That said, the time matters too. So, if I've run exactly 6 miles and it's under 60 mins, then I'll keep running to get to 60 minutes. BUT I won't count the extra distance in my weekly mileage. So weird I know! I should be embarrassed to even write this, but I feel like other Type A runners get it ;)

I tend to want something round whether that's the distance or time. Lately I've been training for time so I run for 55 minutes, for example. Then I'm ok with the distance being off.

I just shared with this big running group on FB I co-admin how inaccurate GPS watches are here in Philly with all of our tall buildings. With that said, I STILL have to hit a rounded number, like anything ending in .00, .25, .5, or .75. It's so silly and I know it!

I make homemade kombucha and a bunch of other ferments and keeping them warm in the winter is the hardest part! So worth the effort though. The quality of homemade is generally better than store bought. I love drinking it plain but it's fun to experiment with flavors. I just did a citrus and rosemary infusion that is soooo good! Looking forward to hearing how it turns out for you guys.

I barely ever run with a watch but even when I do, I'm not generally bothered by the numbers. My Saturday morning club run is around 10.8 km and it's never even occurred to me to run the extra 200m. I find it hilarious that so many people care about this stuff!!

I guess that's why I almost always do out and back runs - I can't handle it not being at least quarter mile increments! I would have stopped at 2.75 on your loop and walked the last few steps!

love this 'debate'!' i actually prefer off numbers, like all multiple's of 3 (6.39 miles) or a palindrome (8.08) or someone's birthday...basically i have to *like* the number which is probably your weirdest answer :)
