Weekend Eats + Nanny Search Begins

Hi guys! Apparently 2018 so far has been the year of toast – I’m obsessed with savory toast breakfasts lately! Here’s a new creation from this weekend: toast with cottage cheese, tomato, smoked salmon, and arugula. Sounds gross but it was SO good.

smoked salmon toast

It was nice to mix it up from eggs, too, because I have been doing a TON of avocado toast with eggs lately! I think I had this breakfast 5 times last week. Ha! So good though! (Want more avocado toast ideas? I have a whole post on mix and match avocado toast recipes!)

IMG_2001

Other eats from this weekend included tuna sandwiches – I mixed the tuna with dijon mustard, sauerkraut, and avocado. Surprisingly good combo!

IMG_2000

We also had some simple black beans, jasmine rice, and chicken with veggies on Saturday night. We had some frozen chicken to use up – part of our continued efforts to clean out our freezer!

IMG_2003

We had some leftover beans and rice, as well as some leftover homemade tomato/veggie sauce (that was original made for our Saucy Tomato Artichoke Chicken last week), so I had it all together yesterday, topped with a fried egg, for lunch. Plus more arugula – always a fun (and pretty) addition! It sounds random but it was a really good combo! Kind of like a twist on huevos rancheros.

IMG_2008

Nursing snacks over the weekend featured my old friend Zesty Lemon Zucchini Muffins (<- recipe)! I hadn’t had those in AGES – it’s a recipe from back when we lived in North Carolina – and I forgot how good they are. So lemon-y! Mmmm.

As for last night, my mom babysat while we had a night out – such a treat! Thanks, mom! We met friends at Alto Fumo (which is the new Faccia Luna – it got bought and the name changed but otherwise it’s exactly the same) for wine and pizza (and I also had an unpictured beet, goat cheese, and arugula salad to start – yum).

Dinner was pretty quick so we all decided to head next door to a cool speakeasy type cocktail bar called Baba. Been wanting to try this place for ages but obviously it didn’t make sense to go when it first opened while I was pregnant (although their food does sound good too). Their cocktail list was awesome – I had the “B&B” which was rum, beet juice (!), lime juice, maraschino liqueur, and mint. It was really good – not too sweet! Loved the cozy vibe of the place too.

night out on the town

This is Matt’s last week of leave before going back to work next week – nooooo! I know we’ve been so spoiled he’s gotten so long, but it still makes me sad that this special time with both of us home is coming to an end. It went by so quickly! We are spending this week interviewing a bunch of nannies – thank you to those who shared your nanny search tips in my previous post mentioning we were looking! I’m having a bit of a hard time with it… it makes me really sad to think of someone else taking care of Riese a lot of the day. But… unless I want to quit working, it has to happen, right? Hopefully we can find someone who is a good fit, and find the right balance of nanny time vs. mom time! It’s almost harder to figure out since I work for myself and have some flexibility in the sense that it’s not just like “Okay, we need full time, the end.” Having it more fluid is tough because I’m tempted to try to compress my work stuff… but I’m not sure if that will work or not. Makes it hard to find a nanny when we aren’t 100% sure what the hours will look like! Anyway – enough rambling. I’m sure we will figure it out – clearly we aren’t the first people to do this, right?! 😉

Speaking of Riese, I will leave you with one of my new favorite photos. Ahhh! I love her so much. <3

Have a great day guys! And if you have any advice for how to not completely melt down when leaving your child with childcare providers for the first time, I’m all ears. 😉

Have you considered a nanny share? It was perfect for my son’s first year, especially as I also have a pretty flexible schedule and work from home at times. They are pretty common in NoVa (we’re in Del Ray) - our neighborhood always has messages on the local boards for people looking to start or join shares, as well as nanny recommendations. Happy to share more if helpful, and good luck!

Yes, we are considering that too - as well as a couple small in-home daycares. So many options... hard to tell what's the right fit!

Whatever you choose, I also recommend easing into it - try a week or two with just a couple of hours of care per day with your chosen caretaker, instead of jumping fully in from the start. We paid our nanny a little more per hour than our eventual nanny share rate for this period, but it was so helpful to get everyone used to the new routine in a smaller dose than diving in full-time. And as others said, don’t be afraid to interview lots of people and places to find the right fit- your instincts will really be invaluable!

That's a good idea. It's hard because in the DC area it's so competitive - good nannies get hired so quickly! Makes me feel a lot of pressure to choose someone right away you know? But I do really like the idea of paying a couple of our favorite nannies to do a little trial run... might help me to see how I even like the whole situation before committing...

YES I'm so with you!! After maternity leave, leaving baby #1 with a nanny and then baby #2 at a daycare was really, really hard. (As with everything, baby #2 was still tough but easier than the first time around.) BUT - it always works out - and you and Riese will both be just fine.

Good luck with the nanny! We had a hard time finding someone we were comfortable with and definitely went through quite a few interviews before finding someone. For us we liked someone who did not really have their own agenda, but was flexible to do what worked for us and made us comfortable. We are doing a nanny share with a friend I met while we were both pregnant and had her baby the day after I did! Great way for our little girls to each have a friend to play with but not have the hassle of a day care. There are certainly lots of nannies available in this area so hopefully you have some good people to choose from! Best of luck - for me I found the build up to going back to work/leaving my daughter with the nanny to be much worse than reality ;)

Speaking as someone who has nannied before, just make sure you're upfront about the hour situation. The family I've worked for on and off for the past three years had a similar situation where the mom had flexible hours, the dad had his own company, and the grandma lived with them to help. The hours were all over the place; some weeks they needed me almost every day and other weeks I'd only work four hours or so. As a student, it worked perfectly for me. Communication is key. And if it makes you feel any better, I absolutely adore those girls and have a great relationship with the family. I'm sure you'll find someone who's the same with Riese!

I’m on maternity leave in Canada, so i’m entitled to 52 weeks. I had planned to go back at the end of January, but a bunch of things made me change my mind to take the full year. So fully acknowledging that i’m very lucky, I did find Lauren Brody’s THE FIFTH TRIMESTER really useful in starting to wrap my head around going back to work. It is very supportive and covers all kinds of child care situations etc.

Yeah, you probably will melt down...just accept it ;) I found it helpful to ease into it...I was going back into an office full time, but I did just 2 days the first week (broken up so I had a day in between!), then 3, then 4...then finally into full time.

My daughter started at a daycare two months ago and honestly the anxiety and sadness I had of the thought of it was so much worse than when she actually started. It’s been a breeze, and I finally feel like an individual again with my own dreams, needs and desires. Don’t compromise what you need to do and you can always cut back if you decide you want to work less and spend more time with your baby! You have the power to make your life whatever you need it to be (I have to remind myself that a lot instead of living a life based on fear and guilt). Also, having her in daycare has made me so much more attentive and grateful when we are together. You’ve got this!!

That combo doesn't sound weird at all! I think ricotta would also be delicious on toast with tomato, greens, and smoked salmon. Yum! My husband and I love to use leftovers for breakfast. Simply reheat on a bed of spinach, add an egg, and voila! Breakfast of champions. I used to say I wasn't a savory breakfast person, but that's because oatmeal was the "safe" option. I love IE and eating more eggs and foods I truly enjoy. :) I wish you the very best in your nanny search! I can imagine how hard that would be. <3

Anne, I have been an in home childcare provider for 22+ years and have seen and supported many new moms as they have dropped their babies off to return to work. There will be tears and lots of kisses goodbye, but if you find the right caregiver I always tell my new moms/dads that they will feel it deep down that it's the right person. No one will ever love your daughter as much as you both do but caregivers do love them all in a different way if they are good caregivers. Good luck in your search.

Just put your makeup after you get to work that first day! This was some good advice from my boss after I returned to work after my second baby. You'll cry at least a few times but working can be really good for both of you. I personally feel like I can be a better mom (more present, less frustrated, etc) when I'm given some space for my creativity and intellect at work. You probably will too! My kids have done a mixture of nanny, daycare, and babysitters. Daycare had the most rules and effort (stuff to bring in, rules) but they both LOVED it and I felt they were extremely safe and cared for there. Best wishes!

Hi Anne! First, just a thank you for responding my comment a couple weeks ago about nausea/morning sickness during your first trimester. Second, were there any books that you found really helpful to read during pregnancy? I'd like to balance not knowing enough vs. information overload and freaking myself out. Any suggestions? Thank you!

We had nannies from the time my kids were babies until the youngest started full time school and it was great. My kids always had an extra person who loved them a ton - I didn't spend much time with the nannybof course since she was here while I worked but she always seemed like an extra member of my childrens family and I loved that.

I found a stay at home mom who watched my son. It was flexible but having my son OUT of the house was HUGE. I got to concentrate without ever hearing him and if I was done early, I also got to leave and go to the beach if I had time without feeling guilty "leaving" him at home while I had fun. It was MUCH cheaper than a nanny and much more flexible since she was home with her kids. I just sort of let her know in advance when we'd need her. I found her on a local FB nannyshare page and I knew as soon as I found her she'd be a good fit and we loved her (we use daycare otherwise- but that was for a 6 month period and it was great). I also think that option would have felt easier than daycare initially, even though I really do LOVE our daycare! My daycare perk is the flexibility- I pay $1200 a month no matter what, BUT if I don't take him, it's fine. If I take him at 6:30am or 11am, it's fine. I don't feel pressure since they have to be there anyway. There are perks to everything but really, you totally adjust to leaving them and it DOES get easier, even though you never stop missing them!
